When the kids in my neighbourhood knew how to write more than a handful of words, I had known a hundred. I was praised as talented. People around me said that one day I will become a brilliant official.
Then my second talent awakened, my amplitude for qi. I became celebrity overnight.
Generations of my family are hardworking people, and my parents are no exception. Thanks to them, I was born with all the necessities to improve my talents. At seven, I break through the fourth level. At eight, I reached the seventh level.
With my head held high, I challenged the tournament in the lustrous city of Gudu (translation: ancient capital) and finished in eighth place. I couldn’t beat the older and more powerful contestants but I was not discouraged.
My parents were very proud of me. They recruitd an even more renowned master for me. They bought high-quality medicines and herbs for me. In response to their love and expectations, I doubled my efforts.
By the following year, only the young master of Dong family stood before my championship. He is one year older than me and I took it as the reason for his victory.
I tried again next year and the year after. No matter my effort, I couldn’t win against him. It was frustrating.
It was then that I heard of a wandering sage. Rumours said he is a rare master cultivator, the like rarely appears in the region. My parents spared no wealth to invite him to no avail. I also visited him many times and was turned down.
“You are too impatient. Your life is wide and open. There is no reason for you to be hasty with your cultivation.” The wandering sage replied.
He was right. I was impatient. There was no way I could sleep comfortably knowing that the next time we fight I will return home with another loss. I wouldn’t accept his reason.
The sage then gave me a challenge. “Create a qi armour over your body in the next 6 months, then I will be your master.”
Body qi armour is the feat of the seventh level in Qi forming stage. I, at that time, was just about to break through the fifth level. Needless to say, it’s a task of inhuman difficulty.
I could remember how desperate I was when I was so close to the goal yet failed to grasp it. Those six months were hell. I only managed to succeed in the nick of time thanks to the 5000-year ginseng my father won in the auction four days before.
“From now on, you will be my disciple. As your master, I will teach you the first lesson. Look behind you.”

My parents stood there. Tears of joy haven’t been swept from their face.
“They, your bearers and rearers, had suffered greatly in the past months.” I wouldn’t have realised how thin they were or how heavy their eyebags were if not for his words. “You could have achieved this level in the next four months by yourself. Instead, you let your impatience take over.
To satisfy your greed and ego, your parents traded their health and wealth. That ginseng is no ordinary herb. Your father could only afford it with your family wealth and even had to incur a large debt that would take them the rest of their years to repay. Is your momentary satisfaction worth that much sufferings from your loved ones?”
I was born talented and I was not prepared for defeat. In my blindness, I hurted my parents.
Repeating this story swells up a storm inside me. Even so, I have to face that torrent of emotion and pass this lesson onto her.
I soothe my throat and continue. “There is no me without my family. Whatever I am today is thanks to those before me. My parents give me this body and talent. My ancestors’ wealth gives me a comfortable life to cultivate my talent. Those are what I had taken. It’s only right that I repay my debt.” In the silence of night, there are only my voice and, occasionally, the cracking sound of the burning wood.
My junior sister, I don’t hate you. You are also a disciple of our master. I owe the master a great debt for dispelling my ignorance. I only want the best for you. When you stray from the right part, it’s my duty to correct you.
“Senior. I understand you now.”
“Then that’s good.”
“But senior you see it wrong.”
So she is still stubborn about it. It’s to be expected. She is young. Young ones are brash. They think what they know is everything there is. This is why we seniors must be patient with our guidance. I won’t be able to convince her now but I must not give up. I must spend my time to-
“If-“
Distracted by my own monologue, I didn’t realise her face had reached out to heaven.
“If my mother was still alive, she would tell me to live for myself.”
