In response to the first senior master, Yin Yu meekly leaves her hiding spot.

After she greets all those more senior than her, the first senior master asks. “Do you also want to go with us?”

“If the masters and elders allow.”

“Very well.” He returns to the other elders. “What do you think? Personally, I see no reason to deny.”

“If the first senior said so.” One of the elders answered.

“We will obey your decision, first senior.” Zhao Ren replied for us, the second generation.

 

We trail after an unkempt path to a cave. Xu Fu opens the steel gates then gets to the side. We wait for the elders before following them. This cave was designed and used by generations before us as a testing ground. During that time, the golden age of Shadowless sect, disciples were numerous. Previous sect masters and elders prized talents above all else. That trait is obvious to be selected as criterion. They divided disciples into outer, inner, and core disciples.

 

Outer disciples were taught the foundational techniques. While they could call themselves outer disciples, both the sect members and outsiders know these disciples are “Shadowless” by name only. The outer disciples’ accomplishments the sect claimed as their own, but the mistakes they made would have nothing to do with the sect. Outer disciples in addition to the tuition fee had to pay to take the foundation exam in caves like this.

 

Although called the foundation exam, the passing rate was only twenty to thirty percent. Succeed in the foundation test would bestow on them the title of inner disciples. Inner disciples are truly considered people of the sect. Almost every technique was opened to them. They were cared for and protected by the sect. The top-ranking disciples or disciples with extraordinary contributions each year would be permitted to participate in the core exam.

 

Completing the core exam, and they would be core disciples. At this point, the sect’s secrets were revealed to them. They would act as representatives of the sect wherever they went. They were entitled to execute those that learnt the sect’s techniques without the approval of the sect. It was among the highest honour preserved only to those most talented.

 

Thanks to this system, Shadowless sect fell into ruin. Its secrets, spoiled to the outside world. Its resources, stolen by rival sects and traitors. It had only seen better days in the previous sect master’s reign. Ever since, disciples have only been considered disciples, and the caves are used to rank the disciples.

 

Each cave has a different difficulty setting. This one is the medium. Recommended cultivation to complete it is the fourth level of Qi forming stage. Of the four winners, Dong Yun An is the only one who hasn’t taken the trial. She wasn’t even in the Qi forming stage, thus, below the requirement. Therefore, Zhao Ren proposed with the sect master and elders to let her attend. He argued that it’s only fair for her to pass the trial like the other three. I and the other masters in his faction tagged along to make it feel like the voice of the many.

 

I can understand why Zhao Ren was happy when the entire thing was admitted. This particular testing ground is different from the other caves. Its trials assess the techniques that the disciples have learned rather than their own power. When Yun An fails, Zhao Ren would suggest the next best candidate for the fourth position. Fang Xin has already lost to Yun An so the only option is his other disciple, Li Lian Hua.

 

This cave consists of seven floors for seven trials. Completing the trial will open the gates to the lower floor. After finishing the last trial, a staircase to the surface will open.
