I went back home yesterday after exhausting around ten unlucky job hunts. Most of them shunned me away thinking I am a beggar. Two places didn’t think I can handle the work.

Surprisingly, one of the restaurants had fired me, and three stores had rejected me before. I am not sure what Dong Yun An had done, but my future options may be lessened, considering she could have been denied in more places.

This will be unfavorable. I want a job, not because of money. I do want to improve my livelihood later on but I want a job because I can at least gather knowledge by talking to co-workers or hearing from their gossip.

I can’t ask anybody because I know no one intimately enough to ask. If I show my ignorance of this world, they will likely think I am crazy or idiotic. They would then distance themselves from me rather than taking their time to educate a stranger.

I could try to make friends, but I am not positive about that idea. Thinking back about how selfish they were to not even help a girl from being bullied, I doubt they would allow a poor girl a chance to become their acquaintance, let alone friend.

Morning comes as always. After selling my firewood, my cash is around 54 coins. I have never found another person who pays me as much as the auntie since. I guess 11 coins for that small stack is a one-time thing. Even when I sell a stack one-and-a-half that size, I could only fetch nine coins at most.

As usual, I seek for announcement papers glued around the city walls. There is no useful news as far as I can see, just a bandit warning, a martial tournament in the next few months, some big shots will visit the city…

I dejectedly headed down the unexplored streets. Hopefully, I have more luck on this job hunt.

Like having my skin hit with a concentrated sunbeam, I feel a burning focus locked onto me. It doesn’t hold malice but I do not like being watched. I act as natural as I can. There is nothing good about alerting my stalker.

My bad. The correct term should be “stalkers”. I notice the second one now. I don’t know what they want, but I sure want to see them, at least.

My steps carry me to the main street. The intensity of the first one seems to have subsided, but they still follow me. My instinct tells me their intention is much more subtle now. I wonder if my act tipped them off.

There, my targets. I sneak behind a group of children, pretending to be captivated by the toy vendor just like the other kids. I carefully change my position. This angle allows the stalkers to fall into the corner of my vision. They should not be able to detect my intent as long as my pupils stick to the toys.

The boy pays the vendor and happily runs away with his new toy. The other kids in his group go right after him. Meanwhile, I trail along the walking people to leave the main street.

It was not clear since I couldn’t afford to focus onto them. However, I saw my stalkers. Such a strange pair, a boy around ten and a grandpa in his sixties. They didn’t seem to be bad people. What do they want with me?

There is a saying. “If it’s good fortune, then it isn’t mishap. If it is misfortune, then it is unavoidable.” Keep guessing at this strange occurrence will leave me nowhere. Since I didn’t confront them, I should play passive and let it unfold.

“There she is!”

That voice was clearly aimed at me. I turned my neck to see three young men in similar outfits. Must be their uniform. Does Dong Yun An have any relationship with these guys?

They make a beeline toward me with haste. Those that stood in their way were shoved aside without a care. Soon, the pedestrians open a clear path for them. The more timid people take their leave. Only the curious ones stay behind.

For me, I don’t know what they want with me so I need to find out, and what is better than asking the people themselves? I could choose to run but run where? How far? Will I have to run tomorrow too? Will I have to leave this city? I have barely any money. The lake and woods I live in provides me with food and water. I don’t want to change my living place when I am unsure if I would be lucky to have easy access to those necessities again .

“What do you want with me?”

They ignore my questions. Only when the three have completely surrounded me, did they speak a word while looking down. “You are one brave brat. You dared to hurt the young master.”

“Who is your young master?”

“Drop the act. You think we are idiots?”

“Let’s stop wasting our breath.” The impatient one announced.

The two on my sides grabbed hold of my shoulders. These guys didn’t seem to be the reasonable type. Then, I will have to beat the reason out of them.

In one swift movement, I form a fist with the mid knuckle of my middle and index finger protrude outward. I hit the man on my left three times on his heart, navel, and stomach with my knuckles.

A moment after he drops to the ground and screams in pain, I punch the guy on the right in the abdomen.

Mouth forms into an O shape. His face hangs low as he bends forward while holding his belly in agony.

I jump up half a foot and drill my knuckle onto the back of his head, knocking him out cold. It may look heartless but I can not afford to be lenient. It’s three adults against a little girl. Furthermore, that kid Asan did something weird yesterday. I don’t like playing with chance.

The last guy realises what they got into and staggers back a few steps. He must have wanted to put a distance between us to assess the situation. Then he turns his back and runs away with a frightened look on his face.

I succeeded at striking them down but half the reason for their lack of response is my speed. The other half is likely because they couldn’t imagine I would beat them this badly. If I couldn’t finish the second guy in that ambush, the last guy may not run away. Together they may prove to be much harder to deal with. In case they can use the strange technique, I might not have won.
