My dull duty this afternoon was to be the attendant of the secondary exam. It is a single wall away from the primary exam area, the participant registration desks. There is this one guy among my coworkers who was very excited to be in charge of this area. I just didn’t understand the gist of his excitement. Since the secondary exam was established, it has been eighty years. There was only a single soul who had ever passed it. It sounds like wasted effort to have an entire area set aside for this kind of thing.

The job is easy but it’s so boring. Being stationed on the front deck would at least allow me to talk and meet some notorious faces. Here, I am just looking at walking garbage. In my ten years together with the tournament, I have seen so many brats attempt this exam just so they can cry on their way home. What the heck is wrong with them? Did they think the secondary exam will be easier? Those facking donkeys. If you haven’t finished constructing your qi skin, there is no way you can pass the secondary exam. There is one precedent, but why don’t we all be real here? In those eighty years, there have been more geniuses popping up than there have been people succeeding at this exam.

Those thoughts of mine, of course, are in past tense. Today my eyes were opened. The chief and my colleagues rushed over as soon as they heard the noise. One quick glance was all that needed to reveal the cause. Their eyes are glued to the boy with the long bang whose fingers were swallowed by the granite. These granite stones of chest-level height are no normal stones. They were reformed by the master’s qi. Only those with adequate power can leave a scratch on them. This is the criterion to pass the secondary exam. Succeeding in damaging the granite will guarantee one’s might. That level of strength is the bare minimum to fight against a cultivator at the first level of Qi forming stage.

This kid with sloppy hair not only scratched the stone, his hand dug into the surface in one go like this stone is made of crackers. His uniform belongs to Mount Xiong sect. That sect has been silent for years. We thought they either turned into beggars or had already rolled over. Could this kid be their secret weapon to return to glory?

The kid retracts his hand. Meanwhile, I was pulled into a nearby corner by the chief to give him a thorough report. I told the chief that after explaining the test, the kid strengthened his right hand while transforming it into a spearhand.

I admit to the chief. “I have never seen such dense qi in my years.”

I know this statement amounted to nothing. My working in one of the lower administrator jobs doesn’t allow me great opportunities to meet the illustrious cultivators of the world. Even if I do meet them, they wouldn’t display their secret unless the situation demands it. In short, the words of a man, who has seen just a corner of the lower floors, can’t tell how great the tower is as a whole.

However, I have seen Dong Ya Qi. I have seen Tian Zhong. I have seen young master Wang. I have seen other champions of years before. I have also seen fighters of Gudu’s Rising stars where cultivators of all ages can attempt for the honour of participating in the Grand seats tournament. My “have never seen such dense qi” means none of those had created qi of the level of that kid before.

In response to the hint of astonishment in my reply, the chief only sighs. My eyes perplex as I let curiosity get the better of me. “Chief. You don’t seem very happy.”

He calmly breaks it down for me. “You know the four realms of cultivation, don’t you? Mortal realm, Sage realm, Ascension realm, and Immortal realm. Of these realms, qi cultivation is saved only to Immortal realm. Do you understand why?”

“Uhm… Sorry, chief. I don’t remember.”

“That’s ok. Not many teach that anymore, and everyone just assumes the typical order of cultivation being Mortal to Sage to Ascension to Immortal realm as the natural course. The true reason was left covered by the dust. The truth is that level of qi is absolutely possible. I am sure all top disciples of previous years can do so too, if they had spent their time in training for that.”

“Chief. I don’t understand.”

“What I am trying to say is that no one tries to train their qi before achieving immortality. There is just no reason to do so. You don’t have a life long enough to reach the end of Immortal realm. That’s why ancient cultivators taught body reformation in Mortal realm. The goal of body reformation is rejuvenation. Sage realm’s entire purpose is to assist in breaking through Ascension realm easier and quickly achieve Immortality. When you have your immortality, you will not have the burden of being reverted back to a child of rejuvenation. With ample time and experience in using qi from the three lower realms, qi cultivation is possible in Immortal realm.”

“I see.”

“However, that kid was taught to train qi instead of improving his cultivation like the orthodox way. Those Mount Xiong’s bastards were trading that kid’s future for a chance at winning in this tournament”

As these words sipped into me, a flame rose, scorching my body. “How could they? Such despicable-”
