“What just happened?” I ran back in immediately. What’s with that loud crack?
I sweep through my subordinates who have been staying behind to take care of the other participants. They reply to my question with similar looks of confusion. One man struggles to make a sensible sentence, but he just stutters while pointing his finger.
My neck turns toward the general direction. Greeting my eyes is a girl in Shadowless sect’s uniform. She is holding broken pieces of granite in her palms. Upon checking the big stone in front of her, there is an empty part on the stone. I remember walking past those stones yesterday many times while inspecting the tasks. If she is taking the secondary exam, that means she is still in the Foundation stage. Foundation stage can’t break the stone like that. Is she the same as the boy with the hair bang? What’s wrong with those sects? Moreover, why are my subordinates like that? Surely, they don’t see this every year, but it shouldn’t be too shocking for them to speak.
I walk to the nearest attendant. “What’s wrong with you guys? Why are you not saying anything?”
“Chief.” His eyes travel back to the girl then back to me. “I… I couldn’t explain.”
What is with this guy? What can’t he explain?
“What do you mean you can’t explain? Is there anything to explain?”
What’s with today?
I impatiently approach the girl. She politely lowers her gaze and head in an attempt to greet me.
“Did you break the stone?”
“Yes, sir.”
“You did not use any weapon or any item, did you?”
“I didn’t, sir.”
“Good.” I point at the nearest guy who is daydreaming. “You, there. Do your job.”
“Yes, sir.”
I return to the girl. “You are good. You can go.” Then I catch the sign of the boy with long bang staring deeply at the Shadowless sect’s girl. He got the same dumb look as my staff. The heck is this? “You too. You can go too.”
The girl is young, but she is so well-mannered. Her voice is clear and composed. She bowed to me and excused herself. The boy leaves a lot to be desired. The moment I told him he could go, he ignored me and kept on watching the girl. Those scoundrels of Mount Xiong sect probably didn’t even teach him etiquette. He neither responded respectfully to older people nor understands that it’s rude to stalk after another person.Just like mama duck and her duckling, those two leave out of the courtyard. Could they be friends? No. Their reaction is not like friends. With the cases of those two settled, I need to clarify one thing.
“Somebody tell me something? Why didn’t any of you say anything when I asked?”
“Chief. It’s just like I said. I couldn’t explain.”
“Just what were you trying to explain? That girl broke the stone. What’s there to explain?”
“Just… Chief. There was no qi.”
“No qi what?”
“That girl broke the stone without using any qi.”
“What gibberish are you talking about? How can anyone break the granite without using qi?” That is not even a normal rock, and that girl is barely eight or seven.

“That’s what I am trying to say, chief. She just didn’t use any qi.”
These guys don’t seem to be lying. What in the world?
I immediately pick up some of the fragments.
Nothing. This one too. Nothing.
I go for the stone itself. I check where it seems to be the place her hands held onto. There was residual qi of the master that was used to strengthen the rock, but I don’t feel anything else. That’s impossible. Even if she used her qi to enhance her hand and not to assault the granite directly, there must be something here. This granite is hard. Even if she breaks it by strengthening her hands, the amount of qi required would be glaringly obvious in close inspection. Why is there nothing?
“Wait. Wait. You haven’t told me your cultivation.” One of my staff called after a pale white girl.
What is she doing here looking like that? This is a cultivator tournament. If she wants to fight a boy for gold digging, she should have done it outside.
The girl keeps walking over to the granites without heeding his call. She stops in front of the stone that suffered the spearhand of the boy from Mount Xiong. She gently touches the hole. Just then, my qi sensing notices the dense qi of the boy being sucked by the girl’s hand. Her lips broaden into a sinister smile.
“What’s the name?”
“Who? The girl?” My staff, who caught up to her, exclaimed.
“The one who did this.”
“That-”
I don’t know what she wants but her attitude somehow pissed me off. “This place is to assess whether you are qualified to join the tournament, not to look for people. What do you want his name for? If you want to know, go and ask him yourselves.”
“Chief. Chief.” My subordinate interrupted me. He whispers to my ear. “This girl is Bei He Xuan. She may be from the Bei clan.”
“And what of it do I need to worry about? Our job is not to attend to the needs of some young master or young lady.”
“I know that, chief, but-”
Both of us dropped our conversation as the distinct dense qi that she just absorbed from the granite flows into her now-revealed qi armour.
The shape of the qi armour is heavily influenced by the perception of the cultivators. Since many of us saw the armour of the army, we instinctively adopted that into our design. The qi armour changes overtime as we live and experience more. Some very old cultivators have peculiar qi armour, the amalgamation of their gigantic knowledge. Therefore, I ask myself this question.
What the hell is that qi armour I just saw? That qi armour covering her wrist is like… the face of a monster.
Today… What day is today? What star is moving on the sky right now?
