Following the middle-aged man are people wearing servant clothes of the Chen family. I spotted three familiar faces among the ten servants too.

“Father. I am hurt.”

“Which one hurted my son?”

Following the finger of Dong Bai, master Dong gives me a wrathful look. “You! Dong Yun An! Yesterday, you hit the young master of Chen. Now, you wounded my son. To think that I even cared for you-”

“Care? Don’t be ridiculous. I live in a hut outside the city. That hut doesn’t even have a proper lock. I had to search for herbs and hunt for animals to cull my hunger. I had to pick up wood to earn my money. I had to wash my three old clothes. I had to fend for myself when those brats came to bully me. You cared for me? What did you do to care for me? Do you even understand the meaning of the word “care”?”

Red veins popped up in his eyes. “You, insolent! How dare you speak to me that way!”

“When you heard the brat of the Chen family got hurted, you rushed to the Chen to apologise. When your son heard his father went over to the Chen, he brought his men to catch me. You didn’t even consider the possibility of who was the first at fault. You are full on selling me, a member of your family, to the Chen to avoid trouble. And you speak to me about “dare”? You expect me to show respect to you? A selfish old crook?”

The master of the Dong family bites his own teeth. “You are courting death!”

At first, I was puzzled as to why he unleashed a palm strike from ten steps away. Watching as light from his palm reached my belly, I have my answer. The speed was far above what Dong Bai could pull off. I could see it, but Yun An’s body couldn’t evade it.

My internal organs feel the full pressure of that attack. I coughed up a bit of blood. This level of pain means that my inside is wrecked. I still stand only because of my sheer fortitude.

“I am the head of the family. Do you even know what kind of burden I have to carry? I didn’t kill you for this is already benevolent.”

“Shut up, pretentious. You want to keep me alive to hand me over to the Chen family in hope of satisfying their bloodlust. You just throw away your people to save your skin. If you were so afraid of getting your family involved, why don’t you change your family name into something else then?”

“YOU. ARE. DEATH.”

He threw words like “care” around to give him a good light while pinning the blame on me. The pompous bastard thought I would be too scared to retort. However, I am not the timid Dong Yun An, so he got no choice but to shut my mouth with force. Still, why am I being so talkative today? Is it Yun An speaking and not me? Am I being shoved into this body to do this for her?

I look at the so-called uncle of mine losing in his wrath. In his eyes, I am not even considered an enemy. Hence, he can just beat me with strength and not wit. As much as I want to prove him wrong, I am incapable of it yet.

He’ll likely break both my arms and legs to avenge his son. Then they would bring me to the Chen family. I will be tortured. If I could survive that too and my limbs are recoverable, I could remake my life. This thinking involves lots of optimism but I don’t feel too worried. I lived a life already and I don’t have any attachment in my last life. This life isn’t something I am greedy about. Either I make it or not, I don’t really care. But first, I will see what he has in store for me.

He reached out with his palm, this time in melee range. Good. Good. He is fast, so I am glad to have a head-on collision.

My right punch targets his wrist. It’s an uppercut utilising the strength of my leg.

With that, I have expected his palm to be pushed upward. Unfortunately, the light came out before I could divert his attack.

It hits me like a charging bull, blowing me away. I land on back, dragging myself on the paved street for more than ten steps before stopping.

Is that eight or nine ribs? It’s likely my entire left ribs are finished. I struggle to head up. Sitting up would cause more damage to my body so this is the best I will do.

I could see satisfaction on the face of those bastards, the uncle of mine and his chums.

He walks up to me. “You break my son’s arm. Now I will repay it.”

Just as I have assumed. The only thing out of my prediction is he would turn to his left and jump backward. I detect a powerful fighting intent on the right side of my vision. It wasn’t directed at me. Someone intended to fight him.

To my surprise, it’s the old man that has been stalking me. The young boy stands right next to him.

Gaining the attention of my uncle, the intent disappears.

My bastard uncle appears to have perceived something I couldn’t. He started sweating profusely. He respectfully forms a gesture of greeting. “Senior.”

The old man greeted him back with a social smile.

“Senior. May Dong Meng inquire your name?”

“Master Dong. This old man is but a wanderer. My name isn’t worth the trouble of master Dong.”

“How could Dong Meng be comparable to senior?” The entire time, Dong Meng dared not to drop his guard. He clearly doesn’t want to tread carelessly but he got to ask. “Senior. Could senior enlighten Dong Meng of your sudden visit?”

“Master Dong. Please excuse this old man for being a busybody, but wouldn’t it be too cruel to lay your hand on such a poor child?”

“Senior.” My uncle explained in earnest. “Senior may not know but I must teach this unruly brat some manners, else she would grow up incompetent.”

“Eh?” The old man breaks out a smile. “Master Dong. I happened to listen to the story from the beginning. May master Dong impart the story from your side to this old man?”

“This… This…” He knows well that the old man was on my side, that’s why he interfered in the first place. If Dong Meng told the truth, it would prove his conduct to be wrongful. The only way to get away is to tell a lie. However, such a lie wouldn’t sway the will of someone who intended to help me.

“Master Dong. Since Master Dong has been giving this old man courtesy, may this old man ask a favour from you?”

“A favour?”

“Indeed. This old man hates seeing children getting hurt, even if such child has no blood relation to myself. With that said, may this old man ask you to forgive this child?”

“But… but… Senior. You are putting me in a difficult situation. If it’s a favour for senior, Dong Meng wouldn’t hesitate. However, this matter involves another family. Dong Meng can’t speak for them.”

“Oh. If that’s what master Dong has been worrying about, then may this old man suggest this.” He procures from his sleeve a wooden box no larger than his palm. “This old man hopes this little thing could ask forgiveness from the Chen family for the little miss.”

I couldn’t see what Dong Meng has seen inside but I do know his eyes sparkled upon realising the contend.

“And this one is for your trouble, master Dong, as well as taking the wound of your son into account.” He pulled out a sack made of silk to give to Dong Meng. “I hope master Dong doesn’t complain about me imposing.”

After checking the sack, his smile climbs to a new height. “Senior.” His voice softens even further. “Senior. Dong Meng doesn’t know what to say. Since senior has been adamant about this, Dong Meng could only duly obey.”

“Then this old man relies on you, master Dong.”

Then Dong Meng scolds me. “You are lucky today. You better reflect on yourself.”

The old man looks at me. He definitely wants me to play along so I keep silent.

“Senior. Dong Meng only has this one tiny curiosity. Why did you go so far for this brat? More importantly, it was all because of her. To nurture her into a proper adult, shouldn’t we let her take responsibility for her action?”

“Just as I have said before, I don’t like seeing children suffer. Moreover, I believe this child isn’t inherently bad. She just needs a proper teacher. Thus, this old man would like to be her master.”

“Oh. Senior is truly generous.” While laughing on the outside, his eyes tell the turmoil within. He must hate that I have such a powerful ally.
