Chapter 1: Ch -1: I knew it would eventually come

I sat on the floor, my eyes trained on the screen in front of me. When I saw the reporter read the horrifying news to us, I felt nothing. I was sure my face was as blank as I felt because Lucy patted my hand and squirmed deeper into my embrace. Looking down, I could see her concerned face and worried green eyes.

 

I took a deep breath. Even though I was calm, I had forgotten to take a breath. The world was ending. At last. The reporter’s calm countenance cracked as he continued reading-

 

“The scientists are trying their best to find a cure. We hope the common populace can keep their trusts on their governments. The governments are dedicated to save their country’s people. We request you all to maintain peace and have patience while the authorities work for your well-being….”

 

Even we, as children, knew it was just a farce. The world as we know of it, was soon going to be no more. In it’s place, something very hideous would be born. And we could no longer call it our home. But to do so, we need to stay alive. I didn’t think that was any more possible than the white lies the reporter was feeding the gullible people.

 

 “Maya, are we… are we really going to die?”, Lucy’s innocent green eyes gazed into my grey ones, searching for the answer she already knew. I guess, she just wanted to hear me say otherwise- after all, it was just too traumatizing for a little girl like her. Denial of truth, being one of the seven stages of grief was rampant among the common people nowadays.

 

I stood up, bringing Lucy’s thin figure along with me. When she was on her feet, I held her warm, little hand and tugged her to an obscure corner, away from the thin, haggard children, that had similar dull-eyes like mine. They too knew what was about to happen. Except few naïve and ignorant children, everyone in the orphanage was more than ready to say good-bye to this world where we had no family to call our own. No family to worry about.

No family to weep the last days with.

 

But I had someone who I called my family. And I wanted her to live. I was so desperate… I thought I would do anything to see her live. Even if it meant my life in exchange for hers.

“Lucy,” I swallowed the thick lump that refused to budge from my throat. It made my voice come out thick and strangled. “I want you to know that…”, how can I say such a devastating thing to an eleven-year old when all she wanted was some hope to live? But then again, the truth might help her live our last days in peace.

 

“Maya! Tell me…”, my little darling was on the verge of tears. Those eyes had me trapped. I could neither escape nor tell her the truth that was sure to crush her. I couldn’t imagine how she would feel when she realized her dreams would never come to be true. Her life would end as she stayed an orphan- no good thing life had to offer would come her way ever.

 

I guess, I was just too selfish. Maybe I wasn’t the strong-willed elder sister I thought I was. Whatever might be the reason, I wasn’t able to make myself crush her hope, “My lovely Lucy, I wanted you to know that we’ll find a way, no matter what happens in the outside world.”

 

“But in the news.. the people … they are dying…”

 

“People die all the time, Lucy. But we are different. We are very strong, aren’t we? We’ll survive. When the government comes, they will take us in. And you can become a pilot one day. And I’ll come to your graduation ceremony, on your first take-off to give you my good luck charm.”

 

Tears were rolling down my face without rest. I had a small, gold chain with a little, heart-shaped pendant in its middle, in my palm. Lucy had always admired it. Like me, she also felt it brought luck wherever it went. It was the only thing my birth parents had left me before jumping into the well. And I considered it my lucky charm because they didn’t jump with me in their arms.
