We slept side-by-side on the same bed. Lucy was snuggled up against me, shaking like a dry leaf in a breeze from the cold. The humans had done it- The World War IV. And the bone-chilling cold was one of the horrors that the meteor that crashed on Earth because of their inter-galactic war, brought.

I was not in any better condition either. My hands and legs were freezing. I was afraid to touch Lucy, thinking she might wake up from my corpse-like cold touch. Like many children, I might succumb to the cold and never see tomorrow’s sun. The sun that peeked everyday from the radioactive dust clouds that covered the sky as far as the eyes reached.

The meagre amount of warmth the cheap, heat radiator spewed was not at all enough to cover the whole hall full of sleeping children. As it was for me, the night was a sleepless one for many, many children. The cold today was harsher than any night I’d slept.

My mind drifted to the time I was assuring Lucy. She had turned her back to me and said, “Maya, you are saying to believe the reporter uncle?”

My smile had frozen.

“No Lucy. I’m telling you to believe in yourself and in me. We’ll fight out way through to stay alive. We’ll tough it out, Lucy. Believe me!”

“Maya, I don’t know why you want us to live so bad…”,Lucy’s face was as drenched as mine. “Nothing would matter anymore. I don’t want to be fly in a dead world!”

She knew. She knew everything I didn’t want her to know. I understood she wasn’t looking for assurance. She was seeking-

“I want you to promise me a thing.”, Lucy whispered as she hugged me, her wet face stuck to my abdomen.

“I want us to be together when it comes.”, she rubbed her face, unwilling to part from me. “I don’t want you to go with Ms. Williams.”

Her tears felt warm, but couldn’t melt my heart.

“You know I can’t…. I have to! This might be our only chance at life, and I want us to live-“

“Cut it Maya!”, Lucy had glared at me with hatred burning in those cold, green eyes. “You’ve always been sel-lfish,”, she stammered at he word, as if it pained her to speak such a hurtful word, or so I hoped. Maybe she stammered from how relieving it felt to finally let out the truth.

“You want to live, and you want me to be with you when you do.”, those cruel words spoken by her soft voice were like daggers sharper than any killer's

“You were always afraid to live alone.”, she declared.

Well, maybe that’s true. But not fully. I had lived alone until she came into my life. I didn’t care about the times when children played while I sat on the sidelines, staring at them longingly. Those cold, lonely birthdays had stopped affecting me long ago.

I had gotten used to being alone until she showed me how wonderful it could feel having someone love and depend on you. Now, I could no longer let that go. I wanted… to live and have other living people around me too. That’s for sure.

Lucy had turned away from me wordlessly. She went back to sit in the place she had sat with me before and watched the screen mindlessly like the other children. My heart ached to see her like this. See her turn like those mindless-zombies, even when still alive.
