Chapter 18: Final Hour of Sleep (1)

Chirp! Chirp! Chirp!

 

As the sound of birds chirping echoed across Jin Tang’s palace, Myeol Mang slowly opened his eyes as he awoke from his sleep.

 

Twelve days had passed since Myeol Mang had begun learning how to use internal energy, in which every day had the same events. Wake up, run and do a small workout to stay in shape, eat, meditate using the Foundations of Heaven and Earth, eat again, sleep and repeat.

 

‘So boring, maybe I should increase how much I work out today since it’s the last day?’ Myeol Mang thought as he got out of bed.

 

After getting out of bed and changing into the freshly folded clothes at the end of his bed, Myeol Mang walked out of his room and rolled his shoulders.

 

However, as Myeol Mang was stretching out his legs in preparation to begin his daily running, a voice came from behind him.

 

“Hey Myeol Mang, mind if I join you with the physical activities today?”

 

Turning around to see who had spoken to him, Myeol Mang was met with the sight of Sung Ho in the doorway to their room.

 

“Oh hey Sung Ho, sure you can join if you want. Besides, competition amongst friends is always fun.” Myeol Mang said as he went back to stretching his legs.

 

“Sweet, how long are you gonna run today?” Sung Ho asked as he promptly joined Myeol Mang in stretching.

 

“An hour or two, I’m mainly just keeping in shape so my internal energy doesn’t overload my body.” 

 

“Right I almost forgot since we haven’t talked in a while, how did it feel when you entered the Realm of Attainment?”

 

“It was really draining during the process, but afterwards it was really relaxing.” Myeol Mang said as he and Sung Ho started their morning run.

 

“So when the time comes for me to learn the Foundations of Heaven and Earth, do you think I’ll be able to enter the Realm of Attainment as well?”

 

“Well, maybe not at first, but you’ll definitely be able to enter the Realm of Attainment with time.”

 

“So I won’t be able to catch up to you right away huh? Well hopefully you don’t go up another realm by the time I reach the Realm of Attainment.”

 

“Don’t try and catch up too fast, it will only lead to you not being as strong in the future.” Myeol Mang said as he sped up his pace.

 

“Hold up, do you think you can just leave me behind like that? I’ve been working hard since you went and learned how to use internal energy, so if anything, I should be leaving you behind!” Sung Ho exclaimed as he sped up his pace and passed Myeol Mang.

 

“So you haven’t been slacking off, that’s good. Though I should warn you, just because I took a few days off to get used to having internal energy doesn’t mean that I got weaker!” Myeol Mang said as he sped up his pace again to catch up to Sung Ho.

After running alongside Sung Ho for three hours without break, Myeol Mang suddenly slowed down his pace to a complete stop.

 

Noticing the sudden decrease in speed from Myeol Mang, Sung Ho also slowed down to a complete stop then walked over to Myeol Mang.

 

“Are you done already? I guess going through internal energy training did make you weak!” 

 

“I could run all day if I wanted to Sung Ho, but as I said earlier I’m just doing this to stay in shape. Besides, I still have more to do today besides running so I can’t use up all of my strength yet.” Myeol Mang said as he turned to start walking towards the main hall

 

“Are you going to the main hall to get some food?” 

 

“Yeah, are you going to come with me or not?” Myeol Mang asked after turning back around to face Sung Ho.

 

“I’m going to run for a little bit longer, I’ll catch up with you in the training hall.” Sung Ho said as he took off running again.

 

After watching Sung Ho take off running, Myeol Mang turned and started walking towards the main hall.

 

‘Sung Ho is really competitive, if I had used internal energy while running with him today I might have accidentally killed his drive to train.’ 

 

As Myeol Mang continued to walk towards the main hall, he suddenly heard a familiar voice come from behind him.

 

“So Myeol Mang, you’re not going to continue running? Why is that?”

 

Turning around at the sound of a female's voice speaking behind him, Myeol Mang was met with the sight of Mi Yeon in her usual pure white robes with her long black hair in a ponytail.

 

“Oh, hello Mi Yeon. And no, I'm not going to continue running today, I’m going to focus more on the Foundations of Heaven and Earth instead.”

 

“The Foundations of Heaven and Earth huh? That makes sense saying how you trained like hell yesterday. Do you mind if I join you for lunch today? Seok Hwan and the others are focusing on honing their martial arts today so they won’t be here.”

“Sure, I don’t mind. Besides, maybe we could discuss some martial arts while we’re eating too?” Myeol Mang replied as he gestured for Mi Yeon to walk with him.

 

“That sounds good, and since you’ve pretty much grown accustomed to your new energy by now. Maybe you can start learning how to forge your own swords soon.” Mi Yeon said as she and Myeol Mang reached the main hall doors.

 

“Yeah, plus after I learn how to forge my own sword, I can learn how to use martial arts techniques.” Myeol Mang said as he opened the main hall doors and held it open for Mi Yeon.

 

“That’d be great! Besides, I’m getting bored of being beaten by Seo Jun in swordsmanship training every day, so maybe you can shake that boredness out of me.” Mi Yeon said with a smirk.

 

Once in the main hall, Myeol Mang and Mi Yeon found an empty table and called over a servant to have their order given to the chef.

 

After giving their orders to the servant and watching him walk into the kitchen, Myeol Mang and Mi Yeon looked at each other.

 

“So Myeol Mang, how’d you do it?”

 

“Do what?”

 

“Do everything! How did you get to learn internal energy after two days of training? And how did you reach the Realm of Attainment on the same day of learning it as well?”

 

Myeol Mang sat in silence for a moment as he processed what Mi Yeon had asked him.

 

“I’m not really sure, I didn’t do anything special. Sure, during my physical training I went a bit overboard and trained continuously throughout the night. But I just directed the energy throughout my body just like the book instructed and it turned out like this.” Myeol Mang sighed out.

 

“Since you directed the energy ‘just like the book instructed’, that means you solved the riddle at the back of the book right?”

 

“Oh that ‘flow of energy is push and pull’ riddle? I figured it out midway through the technique.”

 

“YOU WHAT!?!?”

 

THUD!

 

Suddenly being startled by Mi Yeon slamming her hands on the table, Myeol Mang fell back in his chair and landed on the floor.

 

“You figured out the riddle while using the technique!? That’s why you jumped straight into the Realm of Attainment! You had a realization already!”

 

“Wait, so my skin cracking off my body and a blinding light exuding out of me was a realization!?”

 

“Yes it was! How did you solve the riddle?! What was the answer!?” Mi Yeon asked as she started crawling over the table to reach Myeol Mang.

 

“I… Uhhhhh, why is that riddle so important, Mi Yeon? It’s really not even a riddle though.”

 

“What was the answer!?” Mi Yeon yelled as she finished climbing over the table and stood over Myeol Mang.

 

“It was to pull in the pure and to push out the impure!” Myeol Mang said as he suddenly scooted away from Mi Yeon. 

 

After hearing Myeol Mang’s answer to the riddle, Mi Yeon suddenly calmed down and noticed Myeol Mang scooting away from her with a red face.

 

“Ah, I’m sorry Myeol Mang. I lost control of myself for a second there.” Mi Yeon said as she offered him a hand to help him up.

 

“It’s okay, I was just a little surprised by how forceful you were over a realization.” Myeol Mang replied while grabbing Mi Yeon’s hand and standing up.

 

“Well duh, the only people currently here who have had a realization here are Master Tang, Seok Hwan and you!”

 

“Wait, so you figuring out that riddle would lead to you having a realization? Do you think I can help with that?” Myeol Mang said as he picked up his chair off the floor and set it back near the table

 

“No you can’t, a realization only happens when you’re performing everything by yourself, if you helped me, I wouldn’t achieve the realization.”

 

“Well, at least you know the answer now.” Myeol Mang said with a sigh.

 

“And I have you to thank for that. So if you ever need anything, just let me know, I'll try my best to help.” Mi Yeon said with a smile.

 

“Your food is ready, Master Mang and Master Yeon.” The male servant said as he arrived at their table.

 

“Oh, thank you.” Mi Yeon and Myeol Mang said as they sat back down at the table.

 

After watching the servant set their food on the table, Myeol Mang and Mi Yeon began to eat.

 

‘Why do I feel so self conscious when I'm around Mi Yeon?’ Myeol Mang thought to himself as he looked at Mi Yeon gracefully eating her food.
