Rachel did not want to be here but she could not back out now. Todd was in front of her with a flashlight on. The beam illuminated the gloomy hallway that they walked down. The house on the hill had been vacant for over twenty years. Everyone avoided it due to the many terrifying stories about what resided inside such as vengeful ghosts and demented ghouls. Rachel never believed any of the stories but she did find the house very creepy. No one ventured to the house but there had been talk about noises being heard late at night in the house.
Todd and Rachel had been riding their bicycles on the road near the house when they heard a loud ripping sound coming from inside the house. Rachel’s skin had crawled as she listened to that sound. Todd had wanted to check it out. Before Rachel had a chance to say no, Todd pedaled up the hill to the house and went inside.
Rachel had her cellphone in her hand with the flashlight on. She would swipe the flashlight back and forth expecting to see something horrible in view. “God, it smells here!” Rachel said as she put her arm over her nose. It was a rancid smell that made her want to throw up.
“It must be a new victim,” Todd said with a grin.
“Shut up! That’s not funny!”
“Come on, I’m just pulling your leg.” Todd walked toward the staircase and began to head up. Each floorboard creaked very loudly with each step.
“I wonder if there’s…”
Todd was not able to finish his sentence as he let out a scream as the staircase gave out below him. He fell through a wide hole that opened up. Rachel screamed and hurried up the stairs completely forgetting about the lack of stability of the stairs. A step gave out beneath her and she fell too.

She landed with a thud on a hard cement floor. There was a loud snapping sound as she broke her arm. She cried out in pain and looked around the basement for Todd. Her flashlight was still in her other hand and she waved it around. She saw that Todd was unconscious on the floor.
“Todd!” She yelled and began to crawl toward him. She would cry out in pain from the blow to her arm. She put a hand on his arm and shook him to wake him up but Todd did not respond.
Suddenly, Rachel heard a weird ripping sound. Her eyes looked toward the darkness beyond her area. It was the same sound that she had heard outside before they entered the house. She raised her camera in the direction of the sound and she let out a terrified scream.
A creature that was covered in scales rose up on its hind legs. It had a misshapen head with skin that would open in many areas on it. Each flap of the skin revealed rows of sharp teeth. The creature’s hands and feet were clawed with the same scaly substance.
Rachel screamed as she looked at the creature. There was another loud ripping sound from the flaps of its skin on its face and then it rushed over and grabbed Todd. Rachel watched in horror as the monster began to devour Todd. Todd woke with a start and began to scream. The creature snapped his neck and Todd instantly stopped screaming. The skin flaps remained open wider as it fed on him.
Rachel could do nothing but watch in horror. Blood and gore fell to the ground as the creature ate her friend. She needed to get out of here. She tried to get to her feet and felt a shot of pain in her broken arm. She grimaced and pushed herself up with her good hand. She ran as best as she could to the staircase leading out of the basement. She dashed up the steps and her hand just touched the doorknob when she felt something grab at her. She let out a scream as she turned to see the creature upon her. Its skin flaps were open and those terrifying teeth glistened with blood and Todd’s flesh.
Rachel tried to kick it off of her but the creature was too strong. It held her firmly in that clawed hand. Its claws began to sink into her leg which caused Rachel to scream from the pain. She kicked at its face and her shoe got caught on a row of sharp teeth.
Rachel screamed and turned toward the basement door. She turned the knob desperately and the door opened slightly. However, her plans for escape faltered as the creature pulled her sharply to it. Rachel let out one final scream before the rows of teeth sank into her body.
