Thunder clapped in the distance and I turned to look at the darkening sky. A blood-curdling scream had my head pop to the front of me. I walked slowly with my longsword in hand and scanned the quiet church hall before me. It was as dark as midnight in the church. I squinted my eyes and looked up and down the pews for anything lying in wait.
There was a flutter of wings to my left and I braced myself. Bats flew out of the church door in a rush to get out. I stayed frozen in that position and waited to see if anything else would take flight. I began to walk again after a moment and could see a light at the head of the church. It flickered in and out at a slow pace as I approached.
There was a loud vibration that shook the church and rang out in my ears. I got in a crouch and looked around the room for the source. The noise stopped as quickly as it had come. I turned my eyes slowly to the front of the church and saw a being standing on a step. It was clad in iron armor from head to toe with a red face with black strips indented upon it. Its eyes were pitch black and its nose was gone to reveal the skeletal bone.
This sight was not the main thing that sent a shiver down my spine. It was the creature’s horns that jutted out of his head that gave me pause. The horns were a dark red that seemed to blaze from second to second. The ends of the horns were dagger-like and seemed like they cut the air.
I slowly rose to my feet and held my sword firmly in my hand. I could feel my legs buckle a bit but I held my composure.
“Have you come to face me, mortal?” the beast’s voice boomed throughout the church.
“What are you?” I asked as firmly as I could muster.
“I am the conqueror of this land. All is mine and every human shall die,” the beast said.
I walked forward slowly. “No, I’ll send you back to where the hell you came from.”

The beast chuckled at that; revealing razor-sharp teeth. It lifted a great sword that was already tinged with blood. It shone in the light from the candles upon the cathedral. The beast hefted the sword and walked toward me.
I got into a defensive stance and the beast swung the sword. I rolled out of its way as it obliterated the pew I was standing next to. The wood exploded and shot out in all directions. I swung my sword and it clanged against the beast’s sword as it blocked it. I gritted my teeth and hopped back as the beast charged at me. I ducked the swing of the sword again and shot my sword out at the back of the beast. My sword rang against the beast’s armor.
The beast flung its arm out and it collided with my chest as I went sprawling to the side. I quickly got to my feet as the sword came crashing down. Another pew disintegrated. I could feel something wet on my arm and saw blood pouring from a wound where the sword had cut me. I began to swing my sword viciously at the beast as it defended against each thrust. Our swords collided and I got a chance to elbow it in the face.
The beast grunted in pain and charged toward me. I dashed to the side as the sword smashed through a window. The glass shattered and flung out onto the ground. I swung my sword at the beast’s arm and it cried out in pain as I made contact. Black blood poured from its wound. I shot my sword out again and the beast grabbed it with its other hand. I struggled against the beast as its grip held my sword. It yanked me forward and head-butted me, sending me flying towards the ground. I rose to my feet slowly as the beast came toward me. Its right arm was completely immobile as the blood poured from the open wound.
It carried the sword in its left hand. I could feel blood running down my face but I got to my feet and held my sword out in front of me. The beast swung the sword at me again and I dodged to my right and swung my sword out cutting off its right arm. It howled in pain as the arm fell to the ground with black blood pouring from the cut.
The beast did not slow down but came at me again. It swung the sword out at me to which it grazed my abdomen. I yelled out in pain as it cut my flesh. Blood trickled into my torn shirt. I swung out my sword just as the beast swung its sword again. Our swords collided and we struggled for purchase. I pushed myself forward with all my might and the beast stumbled. I swung my sword out again and chopped off the beast’s left arm. The arm went flying into the pew. The beast roared and fell to the ground.
I tried to catch my breath and to forget about the pain in my abdomen and arm. The beast looked at me with hatred in its eyes.
“This is only the beginning human. There are others like me that will not stop until this world is ours,” the beast said in rage.
I swung my sword out with a yell and the beast’s head popped off. Blood gushed from the decapitated wound. The horns blazed and the head turned to fire as it fell to the floor. I staggered back and then moved from around it as the entire body became inflamed. Fire leapt into the air before it burned out with a whoosh.
