Transmigrators are special souls.

There were billions of worlds in existence, each having its own consciousness. And within these worlds, millions upon millions of souls are entering the cycle of life and death. The process started at time immemorial and would continue until the universe ceased to exist.

Every soul is special, and there are many kinds of them. It would take time to elaborate on each of them, but the people in the Ninth Heaven often categorized them into three – the golden-haloed souls, the mid-colored, and the dark-haloed souls.

Souls labeled as having golden haloes are those born and reincarnated with an ample amount of merit. As mentioned previously, these are the people who were considered "worthy" by the Universal Consciousness. Ultimate luck, tantamount riches, and fame are the most common beginner's packages for souls who are born under this category.

Mid-colored souls are ordinary souls that didn't accumulate much merit but were not sinister enough to cause damnation. They have various colors – red, orange, yellow, etc. – and only receive the basic package for ordinary newbies. There were a lot of them, and the entire reincarnation scheme is composed of these average souls.

And the souls with dark haloes are those who have committed the most heinous of crimes. However, souls under this category were not born but made. Still, there are instances when a soul with a dark halo is born to naturally antagonize the whole universe. Well, you could just say that they were the 'matter' to balance the scale.

Then there are the "transmigrators."

As the name suggests, transmigrators are souls that transfer from one state to another in the form of either body separation or death. They are created to form a Universal Contract through a system in exchange for a price. It can be a time reversal, resurrection, or to attain godliness. There are various prices, and each of them is decided upon the signing of the contract.

Specific conditions should be met for a soul to become a transmigrator.

Most of the reasons would be because their resentment is compelling enough to upset the flow of the fate that only collecting merits could negate, or if their existence could lead to the world's destruction. The World Dimensions are fed with energy to function, and if there is excess energy, it could destroy the balance.

Energy comes in different forms and should always be in balance to not create any dysfunction. An excess of positive energies like happiness and excitement may trigger devastating calamities to balance it with negative energies like grief and regret. While excess negative energies, known to be much heavier, would cause major deterioration since it is impossible to negate them.

Thus, the consciousness of the World will grant these unfortunate souls a chance to meet the Universal Consciousness and own a system. The World will use the surplus as compensation since this intervention requires a lot of energy.

On the other hand, there are cases where souls become transmigrators due to mistakes. There are notable souls who were born in the wrong dimension, some of whom have a fate related to people from another world or the operators inadvertently swapping souls.

Yes, sometimes the mistake comes from the operators of the Ninth Heavens.

One person from the higher-ups is not even allowed to take a glimpse at the control panel due to its notorious record of displacing souls many times. It is an incident that has jumbled up many worlds and is still causing problems for the Ninth Heaven.

Jin Wei could be included as a casualty in this incident report.

He is the first case of a soul dying at the wrong time. It wasn't the fault of the Ninth Heaven operators, nor of the World's Consciousness—they also didn't see any external factor affecting the fates. It is altogether peculiar that it left them in a mess. With the lack of solid rules to become a transmigrator, he somehow passed the conditions through the loopholes.

Anyway, for whatever reason why they became wandering souls, it still means that they were immortal and their chance to ascend as a god was high.

Jin Wei becomes a transmigrator indefinitely since he has become a soul without an origin. That's right, all transmigrators have definite contracts with their systems, while Jin Wei will be going around the Ninth Heaven management without end. He also has to drink the Five Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness like what normal souls do to cut their ties from their original world.

After all, to which home will he return?

Thus, he is a homeless soul.

Jin Wei had become a transmigrator since then, doing this and that in different dimensions. His system, System 777, became his companion in traversing worlds.

They had experienced many difficulties and had gone through many challenges, somehow becoming one of the oldest transmigrators of the Ninth Heaven. Some even said that he was as old as the Waiting Room, which could be considered something created from antiquity. His wisdom and knowledge can never be compared to the new transmigrators.

However, he wasn't famous because of this fact. If we talk about old transmigrators, even though there were a few of them, they can still be considered a lot and might be worth mentioning than Jin Wei.

So, what made the Ninth Heaven look at Jin Wei as though he was a celebrity or something?

It can be said that there are two ways to become popular: first, you have to become a perfect model; and second, you only have to become the biggest loser.

Jin Wei is the latter.

The transmigrators have this Roles Hierarchy that is composed of positions and levels. This is set according to the merits owned by the soul upon its first birth. This means that a newly born soul will get its role by the merits it collected from the first world, origin.

There are three levels: C-list, B-list, and A-lister roles.

The C-list is the basic role that is composed of small characters. The lowest C-list role is as cannon fodder. Almost half of all new transmigrants will fall into this category. These souls are the most pitiable group since all of them are directly thrown into the war in handicaps.

The B-list roles are those in the middle tier and have somewhat of a good and steady life. Second male and female leads, and supporting casts, belong in this category. They don't usually have a hard time as long as they don't compete with the protagonists... err... which is somewhat unheard of.

And the A-list roles belong to the heroes, legends, et cetera, and are tagged as the Protagonists. Only a select few lucky ones have the chance to get this role. The prestige that any soul could get is cumbersome the reason why this has become the main goal of the other souls.

It could only be obtained after exercising the maximum operation of the protagonist's role.

The reason why the Promotion Department existed was to give promotions to the roles of the transmigrators. Basically, each transmigrator should collect a certain number of points to buy their promotion. This can be collected by completing quests from the worlds where they are doing their tasks.

The more points you collect, the higher your chance of promotion. One cannot, however, simply skip over a role. This means that if a cannon fodder has twenty-six levels (with A as the highest cannon fodder role and Z as the lowest), then a C-lister soul has to complete all the twenty-six levels before entering the B-list rank.

No grade skipping is allowed.

The Role Hierarchy works like this:

Mob Character << Cannon fodders << Supporting Leads << Protagonist.

While everyone is working hard to get the Protagonist position, Jin Wei is doing the otherwise. He was collecting points just to get a demotion. The Officials of the Ninth Heaven asked him his reason, and Jin Wei truthfully answered his thoughts. After that event, nobody questioned his ways and the Officials allowed him to continue.

Those who were unaware felt Jin Wei was just foolish, especially those C-listers who have been striving to transcend the borderlines for thousands of years but have yet to finish earning points. It would require a great deal of effort to get to the next level, yet someone is moving ahead but slipping down.

The life of a protagonist is so good, so who would want to become cannon fodder that has a fifteen percent chance of death over the five-point life limit?

The personnel that was staring at Jin Wei returned to their work when the computer signaled a completed transaction. It asked Jin Wei what he wanted to do with his points. Jin Wei casually looked at the screen that showed his collected points and simply answered, "I want a demotion."

The staff stopped enquiring and took the opportunity to assign Jin Wei his position. Jin Wei's present position is Mob Character Y, but after the demotion, the letter 'Y' was changed to the letter 'Z.' This is the lowest-ranking character on the Mob Character list, and the lowest-ranking role overall.

Jin Wei said his thanks before leaving.
