The time is 10:15pm and I am in my dorm room. I heard that these are prime hangout hours for students. I don't really understand why. Maybe I am just not a night life kind of person. Then again, I wonder what's so exciting about it. Is the atmosphere and the overall vibe of the school different? Or is it something deeper than that? There's probably a secret underground club that only meets in the dead of the night. OK, that one doesn't seem too plausible.

Anyway,

I am lying on my bed, scrolling through my class group chat and sorting emails.

*Vibration*

An email from the school's information unit came in. I wonder what's so important that they would send it so late into the night.

The email opened by tapping on it with my right index finger.

Subject: Integration into the Existing System

Good day, student.

This email is being sent as an informative notification about the Grade Points System. It has been an entire month since the first year students arrived and hopefully settled in.

Now that the grace period is over, the Grade Point system will be implemented starting from tomorrow. Please continue reading for a breakdown of what the system is. For every written examination you partake in, the score earned on that will be added together, and at the end of the term, any student that has a total score lower than the minimum amount (150 points) will be expelled without fail or question.

Please note that these things will result in you losing Grade Points.

  • Arriving to class after the bell has rung (a 5 point deduction)
  • Breaking the dorm rule of no one of the opposite sex between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. (Deduction of 10 points)
  • Using your device during an active class (a deduction of 5 points)
  • Sleeping in an active class (a deduction of 5 points)
  • Not paying attention in class (a deduction of 5 points)

Please tap on the Grades application to update it into Grade Points.

I did just that and tapped on the application, which updated. The new list went something like this.

Opening the application.

Name: Yuki Amaya

Student ID: 11992899-4

Total Grade Points: 50

The score from our last quiz hasn't been added in as yet. I'll have to wait to see what my added total is in all. This grade points system is just a way to start to weed out the weaker students without the school having to do much. This just means our class will have it harder now, especially due to this system, which is seemingly penalizing all the things we do on a regular basis.

The only silver lining is that our grade points don't directly affect our class points and vice versa.

With that being said, I relocked my phone and tossed it to the side before going to sleep.

The next day.

The class was the same as usual, apart from one or two different abnormalities.

Ichiyo placed his head on his desk and was about to hit the hay when Kyoko shook him awake.

"Ichiyo, we can't sleep in class, otherwise they will deduct your grade points."

Ichiyo complained, "They can't take away 5 points from zero."

Minori crudely said, "The school can easily run your balance into the negatives or they can just deduct the points from our pending exam score."

She's right on the money. The school will do just that, so the ones with zero grade points so far should watch their steps very carefully.

Ichiyo complained again, "So much for the freedom they so called have in here."

*Ping*

My phone got a notification. Should I check it?

Technically this isn't an active class because Miss Aiko isn't here, so I'll take the risk.

Oh, it's a private message on Yodell. I wonder who it's from.

Tapping on the message.

Seishiro Aoki: Hey Yuki, we are hanging out after class in the café. Do you want to come?

Well, I actually got invited out by a classmate. This is what we call progress, so I might as well take up the offer.

I typed 'Sure, no problem' and hit send.

Minori kept an eagle eye on me since I came into class, so obviously something is eating her. Should I even ask her what's the matter?

I think I shall risk it.

I turned my head towards her and asked, "Uh, is there a problem?"

The two words Minori offered as an answer to my question were, "The Exam?"

"Um, what about it?"

"Did you turn in a blank exam?"

"Um..."

Minori intensely exhaled and replied, "For the last exam, when you turned in your paper. I briefly saw the front page of it and there was zero writing on it apart from your name."

"Ohhhh. Yeah, I sort of gave up on the exam because there was no point in writing anything if it was just going to be used as a gauge. I still dislike the idea of being used as a lab rat in this school."

Minori tapped her number 2 pencil on the metal desk and replied, "I don't understand how I was placed in this class. My total entrance exam score is 87%. That should have been enough for me to be somewhere else."

An 87? From what I observed, the average total score in those exams is usually hovering around the 84-86% mark. Which means Minori, from an academic standpoint, is fit to be in here, unlike me, who just horses around when it comes to things like this.

The bell that dismisses class for the day rang out, and surprisingly, Miss Aiko never made an appearance. She's probably still in the staff room taking a mini vacation or something along those lines.

As the class began to pour out I saw Seishiro was signaling to me that it was time to leave. I quickly picked up my bag and left Minori, who still sat by her desk.
