Chapter 36: running from Kane
Mckenna slowly sat upright on the bed. She rubbed her eyes drowsily. She would rather be asleep but someone was stomping around in the bedroom like they were in a hurry. She blinked to keep her eyes from closing and fought the urge to ignore whatever was going on and go right back to sleep. She still had her sleeping mask on.
"Jason?"
She called out to the only other occupant of the apartment. When no reply came, Mckenna searched for him on the bed using her hand.
"Jason?"
She called out louder when she discovered he wasn't on the bed. She took off the sleeping mask. The sleep slowly slipped away from her.
The soft Mickey mouse slippers wasn't far off from the bed and she slipped her feet into them. Mckenna almost replayed the conversation she had with Jason when she got the mickey mouse bedroom slippers. It was mostly her husband making fun of her. She pushed the memory away.
"Jason?" She called out again.
Now, she was worried and the sleep was totally off her eyes and every part of her. Where was her husband? Was there an intruder in the house?
If there was an intruder, she probably shouldn't be wearing the flimsy see through white pajamas she had on. She really needed to change into something less enticing and more appropriate except the sound was coming from the walk in closet.
Mckenna grabbed the lamp on the table beside her and held it up as a weapon to defend herself. Slowly she moved towards the enormous walk in closet she shared with her husband.
She was so close to the entrance and it was still dark in both the room and the closet. She felt herself almost collide with someone else.
Mckenna closed her eyes and threw the weapon at the intruder with all her strength.
With his eyes more adjusted to the dark, Jason easier caught the lamp and took it away from her.
"Oma, it's me!"
"Jason?" Mckenna quickly switched the light on "I almost killed you!"
Jason would be amused if his daughter wasn't in mortal danger. The lamp his lovely wife used as a weapon was so fragile, it can not kill a cockroach but he didn't want to hurt her feelings and so instead of pointing out she should always go for the bat under the bed or the gun in the safe, Jason replied "Yes, you almost did. But next time, go for the bat under the bed"
Jason didn't tell her about the gun as it might freak her out but it was a birthday gift from his mother and he was a skilled shooter.
Mckenna finally got her raging heart to stop pounding.
The first question that went through her mind was why was Jason fully dressed in the middle of the night. He wore a black pant and a brown V-shaped t-shirt with black sneakers. He was also holding the little Jacket he got from the supermarket for his daughter.
Last Mckenna checked, he was going to give it to her next week when he visits.
"What's going on?" Mckenna asked as Jason went around her to grab his wallet "Where are you going to?"
"Kane found the orphanage" Jason had no time to go into details. He went straight for the door and Mckenna followed him behind.
"Kara? Naya?" She asked as the sudden fear of the unknown filled her.

Jason took out his cell phone and dialed his best friend's number.
"Dude, where are you?" Jason asked as he descended the stairs "Okay, I am coming right out"
"Is Kara safe?" Mckenna asked as soon as he was off the phone.
"Yes, Naya was able to get her out. She is on a jet heading to Nigeria" Jason stopped for a minute and looked at her. He was about to turn her life upside down too. "I know this wasn't what you signed up for and the deal was we get her when she turns thirteen but I..."
Mckenna had never loved him more, he grabbed his hand.
"Screw the deal. Go get our girl and bring her home!"
Jason kissed her "Lock the door after me"
"I should go with you. I don't want you to go to the airport alone"
"Chike, is coming with me. He is outside"
It did not calm Mckenna's fear. She liked Chike and he was her husband's best friend but Jason needed someone with skills and licensed to carry a gun. And Chike wasn't it.
"Honey, you need the police. Chike can't fight"
Jason couldn't exactly tell Mckenna that Chike was a retired spy who had won a fight with him when he was severely injured and also disarmed the hoodlums, his father sent after his mom few months ago without betraying his friend's trust. So he went with a more public records.
"Chike is a former US marine. He can hold his own in a fight"
Mckenna didn't believe him. "Really? Chike gave me a jar to open for him the other day, he said his hands were too delicate and soft to attend to such a strenuous activity"
Jason shrugged " That sounds like Chike but I will be fine. I promise"
Jason's phone rang and he picked up "Okay, I am coming out! Oh thank God, I don't want her to be alone too"
After he hung up, he opened the door and walked out with Mckenna behind him.
"MK, are you alright?" A voice called out.
"Elena!" Mckenna hugged her best friend who coincidentally happened to be Chike's girlfriend. Jason was the link and it was how Chike met her best friend, Elena and fell in love with her.
"I had to come while the boys go get the little girl"
Both friends hugged each other.
Jason was out the gate without saying hi to Elena. They barely got along with each other.
Outside the gate, he saw Chike in a Camry and he opened the car door and entered. They drove off.
Jason was willing to wait for Kara in the airport for the amount of time it would take for the jet to land in Nigeria.. He needed to be sure she got away from psycho Kane.
