"Slow down, Mckenna!" Elena watched her friend with curious eyes. Marriage was good for her. She was happier and more receptive. And most importantly, she wasn't putting her in a situation where she has to choose between their friendship and her job since Elena worked for Jason.
Hell, Mckenna had cost her a promotion and had gotten her fired... twice but she loved her. They were more than best friends. They were family.
Elena watch as Mckenna swept the room vigorously, trying to get rid of months worth of dust from the room they barely used.
"MK, slow down...no one expects you to get her room ready at a moment notice. She can stay in the guest room for now"
Mckenna stopped temporarily and looked around. Elena had a point but she needed something to keep her busy and stop her from worrying about her stepdaughter's arrival.
"I guess but it would be nice if I finished setting up her room before she arrived" Mckenna saw the argument Elena was about to have with her and she came clean immediately.
"I just need something to do to keep me from thinking about how her arrival is going to impact my life. And yes, I know I sound selfish right now!"
Mckenna let out a breath. It felt good to let what she was feeling out of her. She knew Elena would never judge her. She could sound selfish and stuck up yet she would take her side or try to understand.
"Sweetie, no one expects you to feel good about this development. I know I don't... because the idea of putting you in the cross hair of a mad man is nauseating at best. So freak out if you want to. You are entitled to"
Elena knew how much she loved Jason. It took almost five years of back and forth to achieve what they both had now and if they can get through that, they can scale through anything, no problem.
Elena held a grudge when she found out that Jason had a daughter and even bigger grudge that her boyfriend knew about the child and kept it from her. It took a long week for her to forgive Chike, Jason had yet to win her forgiveness.
Mckenna dropped the broom. Elena was right, she was allowed to freak out just a little bit.
"Yes, I am allowed to freak out"
Mckenna allowed herself five whole minutes to freak out. She paced as she did. She knew how Elena hated it when she paced yet she didn't stop her.
She let out quick breathe in and out...in and out. It was working, the more she freaked the calmer she felt her heart be until she was okay, just like magic.
She leaned against the wall. Her respiration was slower now and she was more relaxed.
Her mind went to Kara.
"She must have been so scared. I know what that feels like. I remember the first time I ran away from home to come meet you here in Abuja. It was the most terrifying thing I ever did and I didn't have someone chasing after me to kill me plus I was seventeen years old. Kara is six years old and she is on the run. It can't be easy"
Elena for the first time felt something nice for the little girl. It wasn't her fault.
"All I want to do right now is something nice...like fix up a bedroom for her so she knows she is wanted irrespective of the fact that I am freaking out"
Mckenna turned just in time to see Elena walk out of the room, she came back later holding a broom and a dustpan.
"Then let's fix the god-damned room, MK"
Mckenna smiled. This was the Elena she loved. Someone willing to come to her rescue. She picked up the broom and the set about the business of preparing the room for Kara.
"How long has it been?" Chike asked Jason who was pretending to be sleeping.
Jason kept his eyes closed and his mouth shut.
"Dude, I know you are not sleeping" Chike pointed out.
Jason swallowed hard but still kept his eyes closed.
"You know when people pretend to be asleep, it means they want to be left alone, Chike"
Chike knew Jason was worried and he needed to talk to distract him from everything.
"Yagazie, my car...my rules. Start talking or make yourself comfortable outside the car. You silence is giving me a tummy ache"
Jason opened his eyes and stared at him.
Here, was a friend that was more than willing to leave his comfortable bed in the middle of the night to race to an airport with him to sit for hours without any entertainment.
Jason yawned before he replied. "Aren't you a little too old to say tummy ache?" Jason asked with a crooked eyebrow.
"Oh please, I am a baby boy for life. Thirty years old is not too old"
"You are thirty one, Chike"
"No, I am thirty"
"Still thirty one, dude....you will always be the older one amongst us" Jason taunted him.
"Take it back, Jason!" Chike sat upright to stare at him.
"Aren't you thirty one years old?" Jason asked him.
Chike straightened his posture "You can't prove it"
"Like I said you are the old man, Chike"
"Take it back, Yagazie!" Chike yelled.
Jason almost started laughing when he saw the jet land on the private airfield.
"Oh thank God" he opened the door and hurried out.
"I am thirty years old" Chike said to himself finally before stepping out to meet his goddaughter.
Jason watched with a worried countenance as the jet stopped. He saw the door open and he waited patiently for Kara to come out but as seconds slowly went by, it became apparent she wasn't going to. Jason's eyebrows furrowed and his breathing was becoming louder. He tilted his head from right to left like he was stretching neck. Still no Kara.
