Chapter 41: Welcome home

Jason drove them home. Kara dozed off midway to their home. He may not have remembered a child car seat but he made sure she was secured with a seat belt in the back.

Chike relaxed while he drove. Jason's phone pinged and he was tempted to check it. He has texted Naya severally but he got no reply.

He wanted to check it but he fought the urge. He wasn't about to risk the life of the tiny human in his car by doing something as irresponsible as checking his text while he drove Chike's car.

But making his friend do it was fair game.

"Chike"

"I am trying to sleep. Stop talking to me"

"Chike, I got a text on my phone"

"Congratulations?"

"No. I mean read it for me"

Chike opened his eyes and took his phone. It was password protected. Jason waited for Chike to ask him about the password but he never did.

"It's a text from Naya. It says 'I am alright. Stop texting me and take care of Kara. There is an emoji too but I don't get it"

Jason was relieved. At least Naya was safe.

"You didn't ask for my password. Did you hack my phone?" 

"No" Chike answered with his eyes closed.

"Then how did you..."

Chike knew his friend will not shut up and allow him some rest without a reasonable explanation.

"I figured it was either Mckenna's birthday, your anniversary or Kara's birthday-" 

Jason cut him off "I am not that dumb"

"No you are not. Your password is 0911....the day you adopted little miss sunshine. Now, can I sleep?"

"It's better than your password, which is 54321" Jason jeered at him. "Okay maybe it's smart password"

"Yes. I am smart... you are dumb. Now, leave me to have a moment rest"

Jason stopped and hooked.

"Too late, we are home"

As soon as Mckenna heard the car hook, she rushed outside with Elena behind her. Jason stopped and came outside. Mckenna flew into his arms and he kissed her.

"Is she okay?" 

"She is fine. Sorry for making you worry" Jason kissed her hair before letting her go.

Elena waited patiently for her boyfriend to get down from the car. Chike took his time.

"What is wrong with Chike?" Elena asked her boss.

Jason turned towards Chike, good for him he finally made it out of the car.

"Oh, Chike is fine. He is just a little.... shocked to see Kara, is all" Jason wanted to laugh but the gaze Chike threw at him made him swallow his amusement. He pulled off a straight face.

Jason opened the car door to lift Kara out when she opened her eyes.

"We are home, kiddo. Everyone is eager to meet you" Jason took off the seat belt and she came down.

Mckenna was by her side and hugged her briefly "I am so happy you are here with us, Kara"

Kara returned the smile, she even took Mckenna's hand as they walk towards the duplex where Elena and Chike stood. 

"You are my Aunt Elena.... Uncle Chike talks about you a lot...a lot. He says he is lovely in mad with you"

Jason wanted to correct her but he simply didn't. It was okay to be lovely in mad with someone.

"Well, I love him too and it's nice to finally meet you, Kara" Elena shook her hand.

"Come on, Kara. Let's go see your room" Mckenna pulled her towards the entrance of the apartment leaving the adults behind.

"I have a room already!" She had a shocked expression.

"Of course, you do"

Mckenna yawned, she couldn't believe it was already 8 a.m in the morning. It was a Saturday and usually she loved sleeping in followed by breakfast and then her weekly shopping.

Jason like clockwork was in the gym then he would go for golfing like he doesn't every Saturday.

Mckenna slept a little bit as the semi hot water splashed on her body as she took her bathe. Afterwards, she dressed up and went down stairs, Jason had some toasted bread and a cup of tea waiting for her.

"Good morning, love" He was cheerful and he was wearing his golf club clothes.

"Good morning. Thanks for the breakfast"

Mckenna took a bite from the bread and a sip from her cup of tea. When they were done, she left the dishes on the sink for later. 

They both picked up their car keys, kissed each other and drove off in opposite directions.

Mckenna arrived at the supermarket at about half past 9 in the morning for her shopping, she took her time to pick things out of the shelves and proceeded to the check out. She also needed to go to the farmer's market behind for fresh fruit and vegetables.

"Good day, ma"

"Hi, Helen. How are you doing today?"

"Fine. You were right, Mrs Mckenna. I talked to my sister and turns out it was all a misunderstanding"

"Glad I could help. Maybe next time, try to see things from her side too. How much are these?"

Mckenna waited patiently for the cashier to check her goods. Her eyes wandered a little bit till it fell on a woman chasing her toddler. Mckenna smiled. They looked adorable.

"Kids, right?" She whispered to Helen. Wait! Kids! Jason's kid.

Mckenna gasped loudly, grabbed her bag and ran out the door.

"Mrs Mckenna!" Helen was surprised.

"Have it delivered to my house. I have a family emergency!" Mckenna yelled on her way out.

She opened her car and entered. She drove like a mad person as she raced to get home before her stepdaughter realized her parents had forgotten her and worst, locked her in their duplex.

Kara yawned and opened her eyes. She knew it was morning. If she was in Malawi, Naya would be shaking her and dragging her out of bed but she was in Nigeria. She has been for two days now.

She slipped her feet into her slippers and opened the door. She took the stairs down to the kitchen. She looked around but there was no one in sight.

"Hello!"
