Chapter 42: I didn't forget

"Hello! Is anybody home?" Kara yelled for the second time. The sitting room was empty and she stood still for a minute before she searched her head for a solution. She could call grandma but she wasn't in the country.

"Hello!"

"Hi Kara!" A voice startled the little girl. She turned abruptly towards the kitchen where the voice came from.

Then she smiled softly. "Hi, Umma. I didn't see you there"

Mckenna smiled softly at her. She was holding a bowl of cereal in her right hand and milk on the left."Breakfast?"

"I need to brush my teeth first. Be back in a jiffy!" Kara raced upstairs to her room.

Mckenna let out a breath. She dropped the plate on the dining table .

She closed her eyes temporarily as relief flooded her.

"That was a close one!" She muttered. She took off the bogus gown she was wearing to reveal the clothes she had on in the supermarket. She had drove like a mad person and hooked severally at other cars yet she barely got home in time to pick a bogus gown from the laundry bucket and pour cereal in a bowl.

Thank God she made it. Mckenna sat on one of the chairs when Jason ran inside the room.

"Kara?" Then he saw Mckenna sitting by the dining table. "Oh you are here!"

"I barely made it" Mckenna admitted "I was almost done with my shopping when I realized that..."

"We forgot Kara" Jason completed for her.

"Well, we are not terrible people. We just forgot...a human being. Everything is fine"

***********

Mckenna watched her stepdaughter via the car mirror. She couldn't believe it's been a month already. She was barely hanging on. The girl was as difficult as they come and Jason can't find any fault with Kara and she refuses to point it out. Hopefully, with time there would be changes, after all Kara has been through a lot

Mckenna decided to go shopping with Kara. She figured it would give them a little time to bond and Kara needed clothes.

Mckenna picked out a pink dress for the little girl but she declined. She preferred shorts and tops. Mckenna obliged her and thought nothing of it until she started declining every single item she picked for her.

The blue skirt, the black bag pack, the yellow rain coat the list just went on. Mckenna was on her last patience when someone she knew too well entered into the kiddies clothes mall. Jackson Donna! As if her day wasn't Cappy enough, she now has to deal with the man that abandoned her and his tiny bride. The fact that her estranged father's wife was a few months or Maybe a year younger was just embarrassing.

No, Mckenna wasn't embarrassed for herself, she was embarrassed for Jackson Donna. The little girl wife was the perfect example of middle life crisis except it was more of crisis and less of mid since he was approaching his sixties.

Mckenna instinctively reached out to Kara and held her shoulders firmly to keep her from colliding with Jackson.

She must have held on too tightly because the little girl objected strongly and fought for her freedom.

"Sorry" Mckenna whispered just as Jackson came face to face with her.

He was wearing a suit and tie while his tiny wife wore jeans and a crop top. Mckenna should stop calling her his tiny wife but somehow, she couldn't. And someone should really tell Jackson it was a Saturday and the suit looked ridiculous.

She decided to avoid the family reunion at the last moment. She grabbed Kara's hand and she walked towards the opposite direction. But then Jackson spoke to her.

"Mckenna"

Mckenna froze. She tried not to curl up her fist. The last thing she wanted was to show Jackson she felt anything but indifference for him. She turned and smiled like she had no care in the world.

"Mr. Donna! Fancy seeing you here. And I must insist you call me Mrs Yagazie"

Jackson's tiny wife came forward with outstretched hands. She was a little bit too happy and bouncy for Mckenna. Just like having a kid as a step mother.

"Hi, my name is Joan. We haven't been introduced yet. I am your father's wife and it's nice to finally meet you"

Mckenna smiled alright but she didn't shake her hand.

Slowly she covered Kara's ears and said her piece "Oh he is not my father. He is just a dude that got my mom pregnant. Jackson is a sperm donor"

"Mckenna" Jackson appeared unaffected. He didn't bat an eyelid. He wanted to say more when Kara spoke.

"If he is your father, do I have to call him grandpa?" Kara asked her.

"No, baby. You don't have to call him anything. You are hardly going to see him. He will crawl back to-" Mckenna was interrupted by Jackson who hated the direction of conversation she was making with the little girl.

"Hi, What is your name, little girl?

"Kara Hope Yagazie" Kara answered smartly.

"You are..." Jackson was confused.

"She is our daughter... Jason's and I. Kara honey please go check out that hat section. I will be there in a beep" Mckenna smiled at the little girl.

"Goodbye, Mr. Donna" Kara turned and walked towards the hat section of the mall.

Joan smiled nervously at Mckenna. She was just trying way too hard for Mckenna's liking.

"Jackson, we should tell her don't you think? I mean, people would know soon enough" Jackson shook his head slightly but Joan continued.

"We are pregnant! You are going to be a big sister" Joan smiled brightly like she won a lottery.

Mckenna flashed a fake smile at her. "Congratulations, Joan"

Joan was overjoyed for the good wishes but Mckenna spoke again "Try not to die during childbirth, Mr Donna here has a knack for abandoning his kids especially ones without mothers but I suppose the baby's grandmother would take care of it. Hoping she is not the wicked witch of the west like mine"

Joan was terrified.

"My parents are gone"

"Oh! I am sorry for your lost. It's explains the daddy issues you have and why you married a self absorbing douchebag like daddy dearest. You want an advice, find a good orphanage...just in case"

Mckenna turned to leave but Jackson spoke.

"You are angry at me, I get it but going after my business is simply childish"

Mckenna stopped and Looked at him. She moved closer so she could whisper to him.

"Are you hurt yet? Do you spend hours thinking about it? If the answer is no then I am not done with you. I want to hurt you...real bad Mr.. Donna and now, I have the means and the financial capacity to do so. So buckle up, I am not done with you yet"
