chapter 44: Things I wouldn't do

"What is it, Kara?" Jason pulled her behind him. If there was someone there to hurt her, the person would have to go through him.

"Spider! Spider" Kara pointed towards the kitchen.

Jason let out a breath. The girl had scared him because of a spider. He went inside the kitchen and found the little sucker and killed it.

He made her dinner and watched her eat.

"I think mama would be furious I am eating cereal for dinner. But I like it"

Jason smiled. He was hopeless in the kitchen. The only thing he can about make in the kitchen was boiling water.

"Come on, let's get you to bed"

He made sure she was tucked in. 

"Dad, do you think Umma likes me?" 

Jason was taken aback. He had no idea where the question was coming from.

"Of course, she does. She loves you just like I do"

"Okay"

"Good night, baby" He kissed her forehead and covered her with the duvet.

Jason made his way down stairs to wait for Mckenna to come back home. It was almost nine in the evening. And she had never stayed out that late without prior arrangement.

He lay on the sofa with the lastest copy of business journal. He must have dozed off because next time he opened his eyes, she was waking through the door. Jason checked his wristwatch, it was about half past ten in the night.

She appeared to be tipsy and her footstepsstep was uneven. He sat upright.

"Hey, I didn't mean to wake you" She dropped her pulse on the sofa and yawned like she was sleepy.

She blinked before she sat down on the sofa.

Jason moved closer to her and sat on the glass table. He took her left foot and started removing her shoe.

"Seemed like a fun night...You are drunk"

Mckenna laughed like he was making a joke. Jason smiled. Drunk Mckenna was crazy.

"Do you remember the last time I was drunk? I proposed to you, Jason"

Jason took her right foot and started removing her shoe.

"Well, technically you asked me to do you the pleasure of becoming your wife" Jason reminded her.

"But you can't be my wife....I am your wife, Jason"

"I know, baby. You are my wife and I am your husband, don't have too much fun next time without me, okay?" Jason moved strands of hair away from her face.

"I think I am drunk"

Jason chuckled. It was great detective skills on her part.

Mckenna lifted her legs and placed them on the sofa as she lay down. She took two quick breathes before she spoke again.

"Come lie with me. I will make space for you"

Jason obliged her. He pushed her up and made her lie on his chest.

They stayed like that for a while. He could smell the alcohol on her breathe but he didn't mind much as far as Kara doesn't see her like that. Good thing she was already asleep.

"Dad?"

Jason was startled. He didn't hear her come down.

"What is it, Bean?"

"Can I stay with you, I had a bad dream" 

Mckenna made no move to stand up. She simply stared at the little girl. All she wanted was to snuggle with her husband but she couldn't even have that.

"Of course, you can" Jason tapped her shoulder gently and Mckenna reluctantly stood up.

"I am sure the sofa can contain the three of us" Jason said to pacify her.

"I should go to bed. Good night Kara" Mckenna turned and walked up to her room.

Jason hugged his little girl and comforted her. He couldn't help but feel pulled towards opposite directions. One thing, he knows for sure was that his wife was offended.

Next morning, Mckenna woke up and went downstairs to make breakfast. It was when she saw the bag Kara wanted in the mall on the table. The same bag, she told the kid she couldn't have. It was on the dinning table as a gift from Jason. 

Mckenna turned and raced back upstairs.

She left for work before both father and daughter woke up.

Jason came to bed an hour after Mckenna left. Mckenna pretended she was asleep.

Now, she was standing in her office in Jascorp and staring out the window with her best friend Elena starring at her.

"So, you just snuck out before they were awake? You should have talked to him about the stupid bag" Elena said with a crooked eyebrow.

"Yes. What is wrong with me?" Mckenna asked Elena.

"Sweetie, I think you are jealous of your stepdaughter"

"Pssh! I am not" Mckenna laughed nervously but then she stopped "Oh my God! I am jealous of a six year old"

"I understand though...she is one person in the whole wide world, your husband is capable of dying for apart from you. So you feel jealous and threatened but darling make sure you don't ruin whatever chances you have with your step kid because of it" Elena picked up the documents on the table and left.

Through out the day Mckenna thought about it even as she sat in on a meeting involving all her head of departments at Jascorp. She had been running her husband's company for months now since he took over the Elixir Yagazie corp from his mother.

Mckenna closed early that day and went home. She had decided to spend time with her family.

Kara was in the sitting room when she entered. She was reading a book.

"Hey, Kara"

"Hi, Umma. How was work today?" Kara sounded so thoughtful and respectful.

"Pretty great. Where is your Dad?" Mckenna had expected to see a call from Jason but he hadn't called through out the day.

"Dad is on the roof. He is in a mood" Kara answered and returned to her book.

Mckenna dropped her bag and went up to the last floor of the duplex. It was a space for relaxation With beach chairs and umbrellas and somehow, Jason found a way to place a swimming pool too.

He was lying on one of the beach chair.

"Hi, Jason. How was your day?"

Kara was right. He was in a mood.

"I don't know. You left before I woke up even though you knew we had prior plans to enroll our daughter into school..... together"
