Chapter 43: in the shadows

Jackson was both annoyed and proud. Mckenna was talking like a true Donna. A Donna holds a grudge and then they make it their mission to dethrone their enemies except this particular mini him wanted him gone and vanquished which wasn't exactly good news for him. But Jackson waved it aside. He didn't get to the level he was now as one of the richest man in Africa by cowering from mere threats from children.

Joan seemed uncomfortable. She grabbed Jackson's arm "We should go, honey. We have some shopping to do"

Jackson and Mckenna stared at each other for few more minutes before he followed his wife out.

"Goodbye, Joan. Make better life choices!" Mckenna yelled after them.

Immediately they left, Mckenna picked up her phone and dialed Amazing Donna's number. Even though she was estranged from her father, she was trying to build a relationship with his children - Amazing and Max.

It rang three times before Amazing picked up.

"Hey, What's up"

"I am throwing up...in the bathroom" Amazing's voice sounded strange like she was actually throwing up.

"Weird but whatever. Guess what...I just ran into your father and his tiny bride is..." 

"Pregnant" Amazing finished up for her "Why do you think I am throwing up?" 

Mckenna took a breath. It must be hard for Amazing, first her father marries her best friend and now they were going to pop out babies.

"Sorry. What can I do to help?" Mckenna asked her sister.

"A time machine would be nice but I guess I would settle for a hang. Are you free this evening?" 

Mckenna's eyes wandered towards Kara, her whole life seem to revolve around the little girl now. "Sure, I could use alcohol. See you at six...yes the usual bar"

Mckenna looked around the mall and saw the little girl near the bag section. She was looking at a brown handbag that was obviously too advanced for her. She was by her side in seconds.

"Umma, I want this bag"

Mckenna picked up the bag and it was a fine bag but pricey for a six year old. She dropped it back and grabbed her hand.

"But I said I want the bag!" She resisted just a little bit.

"Too expensive for you, darling. We should buy a backpack for school" Mckenna took her hand again.

"Daddy is rich. I want the bag"

"You can't have it, Kara. Quit being difficult"

Jackson must have overhead them because he was by their side in a jiffy.

"She can have the bag. I will pay for it" Jackson smiled at the little girl whose face suddenly beamed up with smiles.

"Really grandpa?" 

Mckenna wanted to punch both of them in the face. The little spoilt brat, making her life uncomfortable and the old big betrayer that was giving her false hope.

Jackson touched Kara's cheek "Anything for my granddaughter" 

Jackson picked up the bag from the shelves and gave it to Kara. Mckenna took it from her and returned it.

"Please mind your business, this is a family issue between my daughter and I. Stay away from us" Mckenna's voice was laced with acid and venom.

"I am not your daughter!" Kara protested.

"Good. Then he is not your grandpa and I am the one with the ATM card. Let's go... shopping is over"

She dragged her little hand with her away from Jackson. She paid for the clothes and other things in their carts and she drove them home.

Kara didn't say a word throughout the road trip. Mckenna got home and went up to her room and changed. Jason came inside moments later.

"Hey, baby. How was shopping?" Jason kissed her cheek and started undressing.

"Fine" Mckenna didn't want to talk about it. She glanced at the time, it was a minute past four...too early to start preparing for the hangout.

Jason changed into a comfortable t-shirt and shorts. He joined her on the bed.

"Let's try this again. How was your shopping?"

It dawned on Mckenna that Jason already knew of her day from his daughter. She probably told him of Jackson Donna and the incidence with the bag. 

"You spoke with Kara, didn't you?"

"I did. Now, I am speaking with my wife. Come on, baby talk to me"

Mckenna couldn't be angry at him not when he was all concerned and looking at her with those eyes.

"I ran into Jackson and his tiny wife"

"Babe?"

They have had this conversation severally. Jason had never been comfortable with the way she refers to her father's wife.

"Fine. I ran into Jackson and Joan. Turns out they are expecting a baby, how wonderful!"

"Are you alright?" Jason was suddenly worried about her.

"Why wouldn't I be fine?" Mckenna sat upright and stared at him. It looked like she was ready for an argument.

Jason took a step back from the volatile situation. "I love you and if you want to talk, please remember I am always here for you"

Mckenna calmed down. "I know. Sorry, it's been a wild day, plus I kind of went off on Joan....I told her not to die during childbirth"

Jason blinked and then he started laughing.

"I am a horrible person" Mckenna chuckled before joining in to laugh.

Jason pulled her into his arms and kissed her hand "Being nice is overrated"

Mckenna laid in his arms for a while before she dressed up and left to have a drink with her sister.

Jason pulled out some documents to work on when he heard his daughter call him from downstairs. She was yelling his name.

He dropped the documents and raced down stairs. When he found her, she was pointing towards the kitchen and she had a terrified look on her face.

It was dark outside and Jason wondered whether there was an intruder in the house.

"Kara, what is it?"

Jason asked as he hoped like hell that Kane didn't find them.
