Chapter 54: Standing up to Jane
The lady touched the side of her cup. Dang it! It was cold already. She took a sip just to taste the waters but she regretted it almost instantly, taking a deep breath she swallowed the cold liquid. Cold coffee was the absolute worst. But she needed a cup to start her day.
Teaching a room full of sugar pumped six and seven year old was a job for Clark Kent and the other superheros.
She could only blame herself for not getting a better job and she most definitely blamed the government for not providing her with options. Her first class degree certificate wasn't doing her any good at all instead she stuck with a bunch of pampered entitled kids that believed the whole world revolves around them. God! She hated teaching. She was excellent at it but she hated it.
She shoved the cup into the microwave and switched it on. She watched as the cup twirled for a couple of seconds. She was interrupted by a voice.
"Hey, Leann"
The lady turned to the sound of voice. She was Lean and she was a primary three school teacher. How wonderful!
"Hey Julie"
Julie looked at the wristwatch she was wearing before she spoke again. "Don't you have class now?"
Lean reluctantly looked at her wristwatch and hissed. "Guess I do but not without my coffee"
Lean watched the microwave stop spinning and she took out the cup of coffee. She took a sip and for a moment she savored the quietness.
"Let the craziness begin!" She grabbed her handbag and she left the teachers' lounge to her class.
Lean first finished her cup of coffee before she called the pupils by name to be sure everyone was present. It was a rule. After, she watched to see whether everyone was seated in the right place.
Lean walked around her classroom and stopped in front of a little girl. She crouched down and stared at her.
"What is your name, young lady?"
"Kara. My name is Kara. You asked me last week too"
Kara watched the teacher curiously. There was no love lost between both of them.
"Exactly! because last week we had the same conversation. You are to sit beside Jane" Lean pointed to the second roll.
"I like it here and Jane is a bully. She keeps picking on the kids" Kara complained to her.
"Doesn't really matter, does it? The school assigned the table and chair to you and we all have to follow the rules...now, go" Lean pointed to the table with Kara's name.
"Fine. Can you tell her not to pull my braids anymore? It hurts"
Lean turned to Jane and spoke to her in firm voice "Jane, do not pull her braids or you will be spending an hour with the principal after school"
A little chubby girl of about seven year of age looked up and stared at the teacher.
"Yes, Ms Lean"
Kara stood up and carried her bag to her assigned seat. Fifteen minutes later and half way through an English lesson, Jane pulled the braids of the girl sitting on her right side. Kara saw it the first time and she ignored it.
Lucy should learn how to stand up for herself but Lucy simply pushed up her glasses and kept looking at the teacher, silently hoping Jane would leave her alone.
Kara sat upright. She tried to concentrate on what Ms Lean was trying to teach her but Jane wouldn't let go of the poor girl's hair. Turning to face her, Kara spoke in a firm tone to Jane.
"Jane, quit being a jerkface and leave Lucy alone" Kara whispered to the little girl.
"Make me!" Jane taunted her by sticking out her tongue.
Kara turned to look at the teacher. Ms Lean was so absolved with the white board that she wasn't paying attention to the rest of the class.
"Ms Lean, Jane is pulling Lucy's hair...again" Kara complained to her teacher.
Lean didn't bother turning around "Jane that is one hour after school with the principal!"
Kara relaxed soon after but Jane still went back to pulling Lucy's hair. The girl was so close to tears that she took her glasses out and placed it on the table.
"Okay, that's it!" Kara yelled at Jane.
She grabbed a couple of Jane's braids and rolled them around her fist and pulled as hard as she could.
"Ahhhhh!" Jane screamed out in pain.
"Oh shut up. Do you see how fun it is when you pull someone's hair?!"
Jane's screams attracted Lean's attention and she turned around to see Kara pulling Jane's hair. She quickly intervened and separated both girls.
"Kara! Go to the principal's office right now"
"But I didn't do-"
"I said now, please" Lean pointed at the door.
Kara watched Jane's face as she sobbed like an annoying little bug. She picked up her bag and shoved her book inside and took off to the principal's office.
She opened the door and sat down before the principal.
"What can I do for you, Kara?" The principal asked her.

"I don't know. Ms Lean asked me to come here"
As soon as Kara finished talking, the door opened and Lean entered inside.
"What is going on Lean?"
"Kara here was pulling Jane's hair and she has to be punished, Mr. Marks" Lean told the principal.
Mark stood up and walked out the door "Come with me, Lean"
Lean followed the principal behind and he took her to the end of the corridor.
"Do you know who she is?" Marks asked the girl.
"Her name is Kara. I don't care which family she is from, she needs to be punished. And you have one hour after school today to deal with Jane too. She started everything"
Mark scratched his temple.
"Lean, her father is Jason Ekoh-Yagazie and her grandmother is Elixir Yagazie. They are one family this school can't afford to mess with!"
"Rules are rules, Mr. Mark" Lean reminded him.
"Fine. I will get Ms Yagazie to apologize to Ms Jane Ekeh. Will that be punishment enough?"
Lean kept quiet.
Mark went back to his office to have a conversation with Kara. The girl's face portrayed no emotions whatsoever.
Marks cleared his throat before he started addressing the little girl.
"Kara, if you apologize to Jane then we don't have to involve your parents"
"No" Kara's voice was firm and unwavering "She is a bully that pulled my hair and Lucy's hair too"
"I have to involve your parents and Lucy's parents too if you don't apologize... it's a whole thing" Mark figured she was a little girl and how difficult would it be for her to apologize to her classmate?
"No" Kara whispered.
"Then I have to call your father"
Mr. Marks picked up his cell phone.

McKenna grabbed her bag and headed out her office when she bumped into Jessica, her cousin in law.
"Hey, Jess. I was just coming to your office"
"Ok-ay" Jessica was surprised. They weren't close or anything. "What's going on, cousin?"
"Apparently, Kara got into a fight at school and Jason wasn't picking up his calls and they called...me. Can you cover the meeting I have with Donald's industry?"
"Yeah sure, I have been meaning to ask for more responsibility anyway" Jessica replied.
"Thanks Jess. We will talk more when I get back. I have to go be a parent"
McKenna got to the school in a jiffy. She picked up her bag and walked into the school. It was really weird it was the first time she was coming to Kara's school. McKenna made a mental note to change that.
She saw Kara as soon as she entered the principal office sitting on a chair near a young woman she assumed was Kara's teacher.
"Mrs. Ekoh-Yagazie sorry to have interrupted your day… Please have a seat" the principal pointed to the only vacant chair in the room.
McKenna sat down after touching Kara's cheek.
"Thank you, Mr. Marks. So, what did Kara do?"
"Your daughter interrupted a class by pulling on a classmate's hair so hard that she was in tears and afterwards, she refused to apologize. Without the apology and according to the school rules, I have to suspend Kara for a day"
McKenna stared blankly at the principal.
"Why?"
Kara was becoming so uncomfortable sitting there while Marks explained things to her stepmom. She wished it was her father that came. He would take her side and he won't make her apologize.
Mr. Marks didn't understand the question.
"Why?" He repeated
"Yes why?" McKenna wasn't letting up. She needed an answer to the question.
"Are you asking why she won't apologize to her classmate or why I have to suspend her?" Mr. Marks asked and looked at Ms. Lean as if he was asking for support.
"No, I mean why did my daughter pull her classmate's hair? She is not stupid or irrational. So why, Mr. Marks?"
Marks opened his mouth to talk but McKenna's attention was no longer on Marks. She turned to face Kara.
"Sweetheart, why would you pull your classmate's braids? Do you have a reason?"
