Chapter 55: Stand up

Kara swallowed hard as the lump that was forming on her throat, gradually started to reduce.

"I didn't want to. She kept pulling my hair and I changed seats, so she wouldn't anymore but Ms. Lean made me go back to my seat. Then Jane started pulling on Lucy's hair. She is just a kid and Jane was hurting her. I told her to stop but she didn't and so, I stopped her. Now, Principal Marks wants me to apologize to Jane!"

McKenna smiled briefly at the little girl. "Kara, Will you wait for me outside... please?"

Kara carried her bag and left.

McKenna's face changed instantly. She let the anger she first felt as Kara told her side of the story out.

"So, how long has the bullying been going on?"

McKenna stared right into the principal's soul.

"Mrs. Ekoh-Yagazie, this is not..."

McKenna interrupted him.

"My husband and I are paying a tiny fortune to you because apparently this school should be the best and my daughter is getting tortured everyday and none of you thought to do something about it? Did you call Jane's parents yet?"

"No but-" Mr. Marks started talking but McKenna interrupted him.

"No! I don't have time for this, really. I should be in an important conference but I dropped everything to come and hear you talk about how you are not protecting my kid from bullies. So, to wrap up everything Kara will not be apologizing to Jane but she will however apologize to you, Principal Marks for disrespecting you and her teacher. Secondly, what's your name darling?" McKenna asked Ms Lean.

"Leann"

"Nice to meet you, Lean. Secondly, I don't want Leann here to teach my daughter's class anymore since she's clearly not doing a good job"

Mr. Marks watched with curious eyes. The Yagazies had funded a lot of the school projects over the month since their daughter started with them. He wouldn't want that to stop but it was his school and without rules, everything goes to chaos.

"I hear your concerns, Mrs. Ekoh-Yagazie and Ms. Leann will be reassigned to another grade but we have to find a common ground about Kara. If she apologizes to me and to Ms Leann then she won't be suspended but she will spend two hours in detention after school on Friday"

"And Jane?" McKenna asked.

"She will be punished too, you have my word"

McKenna thought about it for a moment "I think that could work. Thanks for your understanding principal Marks"

McKenna stood up and went outside to talk to Kara.

"Are you going to make me apologize to Jane, Umma?"

"No but-"

Kara looked up "Really?"

"Yes but you will apologize to principal Marks and Ms Leann. And spend two hours in detention for breaking a school rule" McKenna told her.

"Okay" Kara walked inside with McKenna behind her. "I apologize for fighting, Principal Marks and I am sorry I fought in your class, Ms Lean"

"Thank you, Ms Yagazie" Marks was just glad that the crisis was averted.

"May I walk my Umma to the car?" Kara saw the confusion on the principal's face and quickly added "Umma is Korean for mother. So, may I?"

"Yes but make it quick. You need to return to class"

"Thank you, Mr. Marks. Have a nice day" McKenna walked out with her daughter. They didn't say a word to each other till they got to her car.

"Will you be okay going back to class?"

McKenna was surprised when Kara hugged her tightly. She could feel her little body trying to hold in her sobs "Thank you for not making me apologize to Jane"

McKenna patted her hair in a soothing manner. "I don't ever apologize for standing up for yourself and others. And I will never make you do that, okay?"

Kara let her go "Okay. When are you coming home? Are you still on vacation?"

"You know what, no more vacation for me. What do you say if I pick you up after school and you help me pack my bags?"

"You are coming home?"

"Yes, Kara. I am coming home. I shouldn't have gone on that vacation. I am sorry" McKenna apologized.

"Okay" Kara hugged her one more time before she walked away.

McKenna entered her car and drove off.

McKenna finished everything on time and the ones she couldn't get done without missing the date she had with Kara, she gave to Jessica. McKenna sent a text message Jason that she will be picking Kara up from school and he shouldn't expect her home until much later.

When Jason saw the text he was overjoyed but he decided to play it cool. He simply sent a text with one word (okay) to McKenna.

So far they had gone on two more dates and they were both loving pretending to be boyfriend and girlfriend instead of a married couple. McKenna liked dating but she loved being married to him even more.

She arrived at Kara's school in time to watch her come out of class with another girl. McKenna watched as she bid goodbye to the girl as soon as she saw McKenna wave at her. She opened the car and entered.

"How was your day, sweetheart? I see you made a new friend" McKenna asked and pointed at the girl waving at Kara.

"No, that is Lucy. I don't know what she wants. She keeps talking to me"

"I think she wants to be your friend, Kara"

"But all my friends are in Malawi"

"Honey, it is okay to make new friends here too. It won't stop you from having friends in Malawi too"

"I don't know. I miss Anna. Can we go, please?" Kara placed her seat belt on but before McKenna drove off Kara waved at Lucy.

McKenna made packing her bags fun. She danced to the music playing on the stereo as she folded her clothes. Soon, Kara was dancing with her.

Elena watched the duo and she joined in. Later, she helped the mother and daughter put the bags into the car.

McKenna made sure that Kara wasn't within a hearing distance when she spoke to Elena.

"Thank you. Not just for putting up with me and housing me during my temporary insanity but for calling me out on my shit. You are the best sister a girl could ask for, Elena. And I know I don't tell you that enough"

Elena smiled warmly at her "You are the best sister a girl could ask for too. Take care McKenna"

"I love you, Ellie. Bye"

McKenna entered the car and drove off. Soon, she came back home where she belonged and the gateman was bringing her bags down from the car.

Kara helped her move them to her bedroom and then they make pancakes.

Jason came back quite late. The first thing he saw as soon as he drove inside was McKenna's car. He hurried inside to find his wife and daughter in the living room going through Kara's notebook.

"Hi Dad… Good evening. Umma is here!" Kara ran to her father.

"I can see that" Jason whispered to her. "Hey baby girl, could you go to your room while I take to Umma"

"Sure" Kara raced up to her room.

McKenna was a little bit nervous when she saw him. She stood up but she was confused. Should she hug him or wave at him?

"Honey, I am home!" McKenna decided to lighten up the mood by making a joke.

Jason didn't find it funny.

"So, you are back?"

"Yes, Jason. I am home"

McKenna watched his demeanor. She hoped he would say something to her. Anything at all but he simply stared then he spoke.

"Get out!"

It wasn't what McKenna wanted to hear. Her entire body tensed up.

Jason dropped his suitcase on the table and opened it. He turned around and still saw McKenna standing there.

"Go outside right now, please"

Slowly McKenna urged her legs to move. She opened the door and walked out, she headed for the gate when she heard his voice again.

"Where are you going?"

When she turned around, Jason was standing by the door holding a paper. Was it a divorce paper?

"You told me to leave" She whispered.

Jason looked puzzled and he pulled closer to her. "No, I said go outside not leave my life. The last time you did I almost died of heart break. Why on earth would I ever ask to go through horrible incident again? Why do you keep trying to leave me?"

McKenna blinked "I am not! I just thought you..."

"That's it, this is strike two. I am writing you up" Jason waved the document in the air.

"So, that is not a divorce paper?" McKenna pulled him "Why would you scare me like that, Jason?"

"You thought I was going to divorce you, McKenna? Baby that is never going to happen"

McKenna felt her eyes beginning to form tears.
