Chapter 57: let's put a ring on it.

Jason stared at his wrist watch. It was ten minutes past six. The elixir Yagazie Corp. building was almost empty since the business closes by five p.m every day.

It was hectic as usual and he had to sign off on some project and resist the urge to call his mother and ask for some help and advice simply because he was a man and it would make him look weak.

But he needed her advice, it was the first time he was running a massive corporate industry but Elixir has done it for three decades. But she did it with no help and if his mother could do it Jason reckoned that so should he, too.

He stared at the wrist watch again and he wondered silently what exactly was making Chike stand him up for close to an hour. Then his phone started to ring and he pulled it out of his pocket but it wasn't Chike, it was his wife. He pressed answer button and placed the call on speaker.

"Hey, baby. Can you imagine that Chike stood me up?" Jason opened the private bar under his table and took out a bottle of scotch.

"Are you guys going on a date or something?" McKenna asked him.

"No. I think he needs my advice on something. I don't know what but I do give great advice" Jason took a sip from his glass. Good lord! That was great scotch.

"Hey babe, hope you remember you are supposed to pick up your sister from the airport in thirty minute" McKenna sounded like she was eating something and if Jason knew her well enough, his guess would been popcorn.

Jason's eyes became wider as he stare at the clock in his office.

"Damn it!" Jason rubbed his forehead with his free hand.

"You forgot, didn't you?" McKenna asked him "It is unlike you to forget stuff like that"

Jason swallowed the whole liquid at one gulp "That was when this job wasn't kicking my ass!"

"Hey, sweetheart…What is going on?" McKenna sounded concerned.

"Nothing, I am okay. Can you please…" Jason was interrupted by McKenna.

"…Pick up Queenie, sure thing my love. Elena and I will go straight from here since baby girl is spending the evening with grandma"

"What would I do without you?" Jason let out a breath.

"Jason, I am thinking you should cast aside your pride and talk to your mother. Ask for her help my love. There is no shame in doing that…no shame in asking for her. After all, she ran that company for twenty nine years, Jas" McKenna advised in a low voice that indeed showed how concerned and worried she was.

"No, my mother raised me to be self sufficient. I mean, I was supposed to be great at doing everything and I can't disappoint her by asking for help now. I won't, Oma. I don't know how to" Jason replied.

"It's your decision, babe but I hardly believe you will have to make a million dollar mistake before you talk to the one woman that has loved all your life unconditionally because that would make her disappointed, Jason. That would make me disappointed, Jason. I have to go pick up your sister. Call your mom superman" McKenna hung up.

Jason let out a pent up breath.

"Okay, Jason. You can do this. You can just call your mother, right? No big deal"

Jason poured himself another glass for liquid courage and he dialed Elixir's number. His heart skipped a beat when she picked up.

"Hi baby"

"Good evening mom. How are you doing?"

"If you ever bothered to visit me, you would know the answer to that question and you are yet to accept my facebook request. You know, the one I sent two years ago"

Jason could hear his daughter's voice in the background. He was glad Kara was having a great time with her grandmother.

"Yeah, I haven't gotten around to accepting the request yet" Jason thought about a million way to ease into the conversation about needing help but when he opened his mouth, a different sentence came out. "I have to go Mom"

"Jason, wait…is everything alright?"

"Of course, it is" Jason said a little too quickly.

"Oh!" Elixir sounded a little disappointed and Jason noticed it.

"You sounded…disappointed. Wait! Are you expecting me not to be alright?" Jason's voice was a little bit raised. It wasn't everyday a man finds out that his mother wanted him to fail. It broke him just a little bit that his mother didn't have faith enough in him that he could run her company.

"Of course not, child"

"Then what was that all about?" Jason asked her.

"Nothing. I just thought that you would need…me. But you've not needed me for a very long time now, Jason. You've always been self sufficient that way and don't get me wrong, I am proud baby but…if I am been honest, one of the reason i was so excited about you taking over from me was that you might need me again. It would be nice to be needed by my son but that is my shit not yours. I am glad you alright…really glad and proud"

Jason was silent for a while before he spoke again. "I just…I don't want to disappoint you, Mom. I am doing my best to live up to you but…I really don't want to disappoint you, Mother"

"I don't think you could ever disappoint me, Jason. Like I said before, I am sorry I am putting my feelings on you…"

"I lied. I am not alright. This job is kicking my ass, Mom"

"And you think it didn't kick mine? Okay, I think I was about twenty eight years old and you were around seven years old when you found me in my bathtub crying. I didn't tell you this but a business decision I had made led to twenty three workers losing their jobs and it was on me. And as young as you were, Jason…you hugged me and you offered to buy a cone of ice cream for me"

"I think I vaguely remember that" Jason smiled.

"This job you have is going to kick your ass at every turn but if you surround yourself with the right people then you will start to kick the job's ass too and then one day, you will wake up and it will be a regular day and the kicks won't hurt as much."

"How do I do that, Mom?"

"First, promote Elena to Chief operations officer of Elixir Yagazie Corp. and for goodness sake, pick one of the head of departments and fire him or her publicly and the other backstabbing assholes will get in line"

"Mom, I can't fire someone for no apparent reason"

"Yes, you can. You just don't want to" Elixir answered.

"How do you know about Elena?"

"The girl ran your business successfully for two years, she is a game changer and I make certain I am acquainted with game changers. I have to go baby, Kara needs my attention"

Elixir hung up before Jason could say any other thing.

Jason looked at the wall clock and it was almost seven in the evening. It was time to leave since it was apparent that Chike wasn't going to show up but the door opened and he walked in.

His face looked so distorted with a frown that Jason assumed he was mugged by aliens with machine guns.

"Hey, nice of you to show up"

Chike ignored him and picked up the bottle on the table. He drank from the bottle.

"Wow, you are really thirsty dude" Jason watched him keenly.

Chike put down the bottle and looked at him with a panicked countenance. "So, I decided to go for ring shopping. You know the ring I need to propose to my girl friend…that type of ring"

"You mean an engagement ring?" Jason asked him.

"I don't know what it is called, dude. But I do know I ended up buying… six of them" Chike started pulling them out of his pocket one by one and laid them on the table in Jason's office.

"Buddy…you know you just need ...one ring" Jason said and watched the rings.

"I know I just…panicked… How did you propose to McKenna?"

"I didn't. She married me without my consent. You know that" Jason replied with a chuckle.

Chike was silent for a minute before he spoke "I don't know anything. My mind is blank. I am supposed to propose tomorrow but my mind is blank, Jason"

"I don't know how to help you, Chike. What can I do to help?" Jason asked his friend.

Chike was quiet for another minute when suddenly his face lit up and he turned to face Jason with a big smile on his face.

"I know how you can help. I can practice my proposal with you. You will be Elena and I will be me"

"No" Jason's voice was firm.

"Oh come on, it just the two of us here. All you need to do is stand still and look pretty for me"

Jason folded his hand and thought about it. "Okay, let's do it"
