Chapter 58: six rings and a pendent

Chike got down on one knee in front of Jason. His countenance was serious and collected like he was performing a duty or carrying out a task that could potentially save the world.

"Do you really have to go on one knee?" Jason asked him as he rubbed his jaw.

"Shut up, you are supposed to be in love with me remember? So shut up and try not to look so...you. Pretend that I am Mckenna and you are madly in love with me. And she is proposing right now to you"

Jason chuckled. He could see it. He could see Mckenna on one knee looking so serious because she couldn't sleep yesterday because she was nervous about the proposal.

Chike cleared the fog in his throat and contiuned.

"Good. Well, so first I will take her to Alicia Barney's restaurant because that was where we first said hi to each other and then I am going to pretend the car broke down on the same spot it did a year ago....the spot I first asked her out. Then when she comes down from the car, the music will start playing and I will get on my knee..."

Jason was getting impatient. Five seconds ago he realized he was hungry and Chike was going talk to him about every single details of his proposal.

"Dude! I am not getting any younger....skip to the main event where you ask me to marry you" Jason hurried him up.

"Sure...okay, here we go" Chike cleared his throat and picked up one ring from the table. He held it up like he was showing it to Jason.

"Elena kamsiyochukwu Obimmuadu, the first time I saw you at that restaurant I knew you were special but I had a lot of demons and I didn't want to muddle you. But then I realized that you are the breath of fresh air I have been chasing all my life. Baby, before you came into my life, I..hmm...I was sort of existing and I met you and I started living again. I love you with all of my heart and i want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"

"Yes, I will" Jason replied in his mocking voice and stretched out his hand for Chike to slip the ring in and he did.

Then they heard a gasped and both of them turned to see Mckenna, Queen and Elena standing by the door. They hadn't heard them come inside.

Queenie laughed when she saw the expression on everyone's faces.

"Seriously, I thought it only happened in movies. You know that cheesy movie where the best friend steals the husband but technically it always the wife's best friend not the husband's but who am I to judge" She tried to stop herself from laughing but she fails miserably "Bro, I had no idea you were into dudes"

Jason moved closer and took his sister's hand and started dragging her outside the office but not before he whispered to Elena.

"I am sorry he blew it but it's a good proposal, I said yes"

"Jason, get out!" Chike screamed at him. 

"What about the ring?" Mckenna asked Jason.

"Oh don't worry, he bought like six of them and there is a good possibility that this one is stuck on my pinky finger" Jason raised his hand and try to take it off but it won't bulge.

"See" 

"Be quiet honey, this is a special moment" Mckenna whispered and leaned into him. Jason stopped dragging his sister and held her.

Chike looked uncomfortable and nervous. Jason had never seen him so nervous before. He took out his phone and sent a text to him.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Chike heard his phone buzz and he took it out just to have that extra seconds to compose himself. He read the message and he looked at Jason, who nodded reassuringly at him.

Chike cleared his throat again.

"Elena..." His voice was a bare whisper but Elena heard him.

She had no idea that she was crying until the tears wet her cheeks.

"Are you doing what I think you are doing?" Elena asked him.

"I didn't exactly imagine that I would propose to you in Jason's office of all the places in the whole wide world but Okay... Elena, you are the..."

"Yes" Elena whispered.

"But I haven't said anything yet" Chike complained.

"I know you have a whole speech, Chike and I am ready to hear it but ask the question first"

Chike wondered why he was getting emotional. Maybe because he had seen so much darkness in his time in the world, he never thought he would see light at the end of his tunnel let alone have a chance to stay in the light forever. She was everything and more to him. And he couldn't even express it.

He felt his eyes wet with tears as he took out his necklace... as he took out the only thing of his dead mother he carried around with him. It was a fish shaped pendant. 

His mother had a thing for fishes and oceans. His father used to joke when he was younger that she was a mermaid in her past life. Chike lost her when he was seven on 9/11.

"Elena, I love you. Will you marry me?"

"Yes, Chike! Yes! I will marry you. I will marry the heck out of you!"

Elena knelt with him and hugged him. He placed the pendent in her hand and closed her palm.

"Are you sure you want me to have this?" Elena knew how much he valued the pendent.

"Yes, I am sure"

Chike kissed her amidst the cheering from Mckenna, Queenie and Jason even whistled.

Elena ran to show Mckenna the pendent and both of them screamed like schoolgirls pumped on sugar.

Jason moved closer to say congratulations.

"I am happy he chose you. He doesn't deserve you but I am glad"

Elena hugged him too and as soon as she pulled away, she asked for her ring back.

"Take it off, Jason" she opened her palm and waited for him to take the ring out of his pinky finger.

"But he gave it to me!" Jason complained as he pulled the ring severally.

"It's mine. Take it off" Elena smiled sweetly at him but she made him take it off. Jason placed the ring on her palm and kissed her cheek. It was like he was telling her welcome to his family.

"You know I wanted to promote you to my COO but you are nasty to me, so..."

"Are you joking with me right now? I just got engaged, you shouldn't joke about something like that, Jason!" Elena turned and stared at him with serious eyes. 

"I am not joking. The Job is yours if you want it and if the CEO of Jascorp agrees to let you go" Jason answered with a warm smile.

"Of course she will. She is my best friend" she turned to Mckenna and Said "sweetie, fire me already!"

"Fine. You are fired, Ellie. Congratulations girl"

As Chike searched through Jason's bar for drinks, Jason went to his sister and hugged her.

"It's been a while, kid"

"I know. Apparently, I have a niece and no one sort to tell me" Queen asked with a raised eyebrow.

"You will get to meet Kara, I promise but tell me about you. What's the latest?"

Queenie smiled dreamily.

"Well, I have a boyfriend now"

"Wait! What?"

Kara knew she loved spending her day with her grandma but today was the best. They didn't spend it inside the mansion instead Elixir took her all over town for sight seeing. 

Now, they were coming off a waterslide ride in magic land and it was the best time, she has had in a while.

It took a lot of convincing but She got her grandmother to buy Colton candy for her to devour.

Kara was half way through the candy when she felt like someone was watching her. At first she looked around the almost empty playground but she didn't see anyone suspicious. She waved it off and chalked it up to sugar hallucinations.

Kara went back to enjoying her Colton candy when Elixir's phone rang and she gave her a reasonable distance to take the call.

"Hi, baby...."

Kara's mind stopped listening in on her grandmother's phone call when she felt again like she was being watched again.

She stopped pulling the Colton candy and turned around immediately to move closer to her grandmother. It was when she saw him, standing in a distance near the ticket stand with a blank face. Kara would remember that face anywhere in the world. It was a face that haunted her dreams since she turned six years old. There was no dispute.....her psycho father was standing near the ticket stall and his name was Kane.
