Chapter 68: Let's play with Kane

Mckenna stared in horror at the message on Naya's phone. There was no way it was possible except the message clearly stated it was.

"There is no way that is true! You are making it up!" Mckenna yelled at Naya.

Mckenna fought the rising panic coming from the pit of her stomach. She could hear her heart pounding loudly like it wasn't in her chest anymore, instead it was dancing to a weird song in her throat. 

Naya stared at her. She didn't have time to hold anybody's hand not while her family was in danger.

"Yes, Mckenna. I left my safe harbour in Malawi, flew for the first time in six years just to scare the crap out of you. If you won't get yourself together long enough to figure out how to get our people back, then for fuck's sake, go cry in the bathroom!" Naya yelled at her.

It was like the vault where she locked her feelings was beginning to open. Naya felt the terror stab at her cold heart.

She couldn't let the fear torment her or paralyze her. Or worst turn her into a sobbing pile of uselessness like Jason's wife.

A mad man has her whole family and she would be damned if that vault opens.

Creating a mental paper weight, she weighed the vault down with it and snapped it shut.

Slowly, the terror disappeared and she felt nothing again. Her head was clear and she knew what she had to do. She needed to ditch Mckenna. She was obviously not going to be of any help.

Mckenna tried to control her breathing. Was this how panic attack felt like? She felt like someone was playing the game of whack the mole with her entire body with a bat laced with acid.

"We have to tell Elixir, she would know what to do" Mckenna turned to race into the mansion but Naya grabbed her hand and suddenly, she was on the ground with Naya on top of her.

"What is fuck do you think you are doing? Tell Elixir and she tells the commissioner of police who calls a press conference and boom... everywhere you turn, there is a picture of Nolani and Jason. Kane cuts his loss, kills Jason and makes my baby disappear forever. Is that what you want for fuck's sake!" Naya yelled at her.

Mckenna struggled to be free but Naya was obviously skilled in wrestling.

"Get off me, you psycho! And baby girl's name is Kara" Mckenna yelled at her.

"Well, who cares about her name! If you do what you have in mind. You will sign their death warrant!"

"Get off of me, Naya!" Mckenna said through her clenched jaw.

"Fine!" Naya stands up. "Get a grip on yourself. I don't have time for this"

Mckenna slowly controlled her pounding heart and she willed herself to a level of calm. She wiped her clammy cold hands on her red gown. She closed her eyes to attain the calm she wanted.

Even though she finally stopped the out of normal pounding heart, Mckenna still experience a little belly cramps that she ignored.

"Okay, I am calm. What should we do? I am not losing a husband and a child, Naya" Mckenna said with a calm voice.

"Neither will I technically" Naya replied. Jason was not her husband but he was family. "Kane will call demanding for a ransom and..."

"He will? we have money we can pay..." Mckenna was interrupted by Naya.

"Well, you are not giving that devil enough money to disappear with my kid" Naya told her.

"What are suggesting?!" Mckenna was confused. Naya was not making sense or was the oxygen deprivation getting to her?

"You play along with Kane and buy Chike and I enough time to find and kill the son of a bitch" Naya told her.

"What if he doesn't call for ransom?"

"Oh but he will. I know my ex-husband well enough, he is a greed son of the devil. Right now, operate under the assumption that he has everywhere bugged" Naya told her.

"Now, you are beginning to sound paranoid..."

"I found this under my nightstand, Mckenna! So let me repeat, operate under the assumption that he has everywhere bugged" Naya showed a wireless transmitter that was smashed into pieces. It was one out of the three she found in her home. Kane must have gone back and planted them after she got away with Kara, months ago.

"Okay... okay. Are you sure I can't let my mother in law know about any of this?" Mckenna asked her.

"No"

"What should I do now?"

"Make up an excuse about Jason's absence to his mother and go home. Wait for Kane to contact you and send me a text when he does" Naya told her.

Mckenna nodded, she adjusted her clothes and try to remove the sand from her dress when her phone beeped. Mckenna took it out of her bag and stared at the screen.

(I have your husband and daughter. Wait for further instructions. Talk to the cops and you find their dead bodies in a ditch. I am the big bad wolf but don't be the red riding hood)

It was officially. Naya was right.

Mckenna showed the text message to Naya.

"At least, the devil is predictable. Don't do anything stupid, Mckenna. I have to go"

Naya turned and walked away leaving Mckenna with a renewed sense of terror.

Mckenna gave herself time to pull it together and after twenty seconds of taking in air through her mouth, she went back inside with a smile.

She found Elixir talking to one of her guest.

"This is my son's wife, Mckenna Yagazie. Darling, this is senator Emmanuel" Elixir introduced both of them.

"It's nice to make your acquaintance, sir. Do you mind if I borrow my mother for a minute?" Mckenna said with a smile.

"Of course"

Elixir followed her to a reasonable distance.

"Is everything okay?" Elixir asked her.

"Of course, Mom but Jason and I are going to go. I just came to say goodnight" Mckenna replied with a convincing smile.

"Where is my son? I would like to introduce him to a few guest before he leaves"

Mckenna knew she had to think fast and come up with a good excuse.

"Mom, he says he doesn't want to explain what is going on with you. I think his exact words were...I don't want to have that awkward conversation with my mother" Mckenna smiled when she saw the confusion on Elixir's face "Mom, we are trying to get pregnant and I just started ovulating. And he was right this is an awkward conversation"

"Oh my! Yes, go! Why are you still here talking to an old lady. Just go...do you need me to watch Kara for you?" Elixir beamed with smiles.

"Oh, no...she is with...." Mckenna was momentarily blank before she blurted out the first thing that came to her mind "she is with my sister. They have this hair salon thing planned and Amazing asked to keep her overnight at her place. She is fine but I really have to go now, Mom"

"Good luck, sweetheart" Elixir touched her cheeks.

Mckenna turned and walked away before Elixir could see through her lies.

Naya made it all the way to the second street where she asked Chike to meet her.

Chike wondered what everything was all about and why the secrecy and stuff.

Naya opened the car and entered.

"Hi, Chike. You look good" she placed her seat belt on. "Try not to panic but Jason and Kara have been kidnapped"

"What?!" Chike leaned over and stared at her.

"We don't have time for you to be in shock. Kane took my family and I need your help to get them back"

Chike blinked and refocused his gaze.

"Okay. How do you plan we get them back?"

Naya opened her bag and brought out another intact wireless transmitter.

"That is a bug...."

"I know. I turned it off. Can you have your guy trace this bug?" Naya asked him.

"No. That is not possible. It is wireless. Kane could be anywhere in the world. I have a better plan"

Chike turned on the car and drove off.

When Mckenna got to the duplex, she went straight to her room and took off her dress. She changed into jeans and t-shirt, she wanted to be as comfortable and ready to go.

Taking the bat under the bed, she camped out in the sitting room with her phone.

The second message did not come until 5am in the morning.

Mckenna was in-between sleeping and consciousness when she heard the beep and she grabbed the phone immediately.

(I want 3.5 millon dollars. You have five hours to get the money ready. Wait for my call on the drop off point)

Mckenna quickly texted him back. 

(I can't get 3.5 million dollars in five hours. It's impossible)

The next message was a picture of Jason with a knife to his throat. 

(Get the money or say byebye to your husband)

Mckenna breathing was laborious and her hand shook as she typed the next message.

(Don't hurt my family. I will get you the money)

Mckenna dropped the phone on the table and raced to the nearest sink to throw up.

There was no way she could get 3.5 million in five hours.. Mckenna turned to the mirror and screamed.
