Chapter 69: Before the big bad

Fifteen hours earlier.

"Where should I pick you up?" Amazing waited for her boyfriend to reply before she hung up.

Soon, she was driving into the bar like promised and Kane was there waiting for her.

"Hey, handsome. Hop in!" Amazing smiled brightly at him even though she was still pissed off about seeing Joan in McKenna's office.

Kane opened the door and entered. He kissed her on the lips. 

"Who upset you?" He asked her.

The concern in his voice was obvious as he looked at her. 

Amazing relaxed more as soon as he cupped her cheek. It was like he had the super power to see through her to the emotions she was feeling.

Amazing liked that. No one has ever paid that much attention to her, not her father or any other man she had ever dated.

Kane's eyebrows were pulled together, almost giving off a frown like look. Amazing watched as his eyelid flutter severally as he watched her.

"It was nothing, really. Just a little family spat, I guess" Amazing replied. She was never one to discuss her family with anyone.

"Just talk to me" Kane told her.

She didn't know how. Growing up, Donna family business always remained in the house and the rule states that it wasn't supposed to be discussed with outsiders.

That particular upbringing never left Amazing. She simply shrugged.

"You promised me fun, remember? We should do that and just leave the bad alone, okay?" Amazing replied and drove off.

She drove around town for a while before Kane spoke again.

"So, you dated Jason Ekoh-Yagazie, right?" Kane asked her out of nowhere.

"Yeah, briefly...and Kane, We are not a thing. Not anymore and he is married to my sister" Amazing answered and laughed nervously.

Kane smiled liked it wasn't a big deal.

"So, if I want to get close to Jason...how do I do that? It will only be for a chat" Kane asked her.

"Why are you all of a sudden interested in Jason and his whereabouts?" Amazing turned to look at him.

"It's fine. Just wanted to meet the guy, He is a kind of a legend, that is all" Kane tried to cover up since he knew that Amazing was becoming suspicious.

"Fine, I won't talk about Jason again. A guy can't be star struck again...jeez!"

Amazing relaxed just a little bit. She drove them to her personal apartment and they stayed in for a while.

At first, they made awkward conversations and with time the awkwardness slowly dissipated. They played the God of war video game that Amazing got for her little brother and generally, waited for evening to come, so they can hang out.

"Maze, will your niece still be joining us for fun day out today?" Kane ascertained from her.

"Not today, I just want to hang out with you if that's okay" Amazing replied.

Lately, Kane has taken interest in her family and the Yagazies. Always asking her questions and most times, the questions tend to be personal. Amazing shrugged it off and chalked it up to curiosity.

"I don't think I have ever asked you what you are actually doing in Nigeria" Amazing asked as she left the living room to pour some peanut on a saucer.

"Oh, yeah...just here on a vacation, I always wanted to visit Africa and here, I am" Kane answered in a charming voice.

"Well, do you like Nigeria?" Amazing came out of the kitchen

"I do actually. Or at least I like one particular girl holding a saucer of peanut"

Amazing loved his reply.

Amazing placed her head on his thigh after she dropped the saucer of peanut on the table. Her favorite TV show, law and order was viewing and she wanted to watch the episode with Kane.

"Baby, do you want some juice?" Kane asked with a big smile.

"Yeah, sure"

Kane stood up and walked to the kitchen. He poured two glasses of orange juice for Amazing and himself. He took out the drugs in his pocket and he sprinkled some in the juice.

When he got to the living room, he handed the spiked glass of juice to Amazing who took a sip from it and relaxed in his arms.

Kane had planned to go through her emails and phones. And possibly find out more about the man holding his daughter. 

Soon, she took another sip and another and another. The drug was potent and Amazing dozed off in his arms.

Kane waited patiently and he watched as her chest rose and fell softly. She was sound asleep. He took her phone from the table where she dropped it and unlocked it with her fingerprint.

He went through her contacts and found Jason's personal phone and that of his wife too.

But his attempt to get Kara's phone number was futile. He searched with her full name but it came up empty. 

Amazing had saved Kara's phone number with the name 'Starlight'.

Kane almost gave up any hope of finding Kara's personal line and he wanted to drop Amazing's phone when a text message came in.

It was from McKenna Yagazie.

Kane stared at the phone intently, adrenaline coursing through his vein as he clicked on the message.

Six and half years, was a long time for a father to stay away from his kid. He vowed to make Chloe (Naya) suffer for a very long time for perpetrating such atrocious act against him and then he would put a bullet in between her eyes. Jason was on his list too. He had no right to take what was rightfully his and walk away without any damage.

Kane's initial plan was to bid his time and follow Amazing to Jason's house. Come back in the night and take his daughter by force.

But the message McKenna sent opened another door altogether.

(Hey. I know you are angry but I've got this thing at the mansion and I need you to pick up Kara from school. This week's gate pass code is SDC 52967. Without the pass code, the school won't grant you entering. We will talk about Joan later)

Kane's face was visibly beaming with happiness as what he was looking for was handed over to him on a platter. He wanted to drop the phone when another one came in.

(Can you confirm that you will actually do it? I don't want Kara to be stranded)

Kane sent a text back to McKenna.

(Sure, I will. Family needs to stay together) 

McKenna sent the last text a moment later.

(Thanks)

Kane deleted the texts from Amazing's phone and placed it back on the table.

"Thank you" he murmured to her limp body and grabbed her car keys from the table.

He opened the car and entered and placed the seat belt on. He knew he shouldn't but he couldn't but help call Chloe (Naya) to taunt her.

"Honey, did you miss me?" Kane waited for her to figure out who was on the line.

"Kane!" Naya felt her heart leave her chest "How did you get this number?"

"Come on, Cee-Cee. A hunter never reveals his secrets. Didn't I teach you anything?" Kane spoke to her in a voice that sent chills down her spine.

"What do you want, Kane?" Naya tried to control her breathing. The last thing she wanted was for Kane to figure out that she was afraid of him.

"That is no way to talk to your husband, Chloe."

"Ex-husband, you piece of shit! Stay away from me, do you hear me?" Naya screamed at him.

"Oh calm down, you loved to play games right? Well, there is a new player and my objective is to make sure it hurts. Do you seriously think you can keep my daughter away from me?" Kane asked her.

"Stay the fuck away from her. She is not yours, Kane!"

Naya stood up from the bed she was sitting and started pacing. She was so closed to tears now. The monster knew about Kara and she couldn't do anything about it.

"Ask me where I am, Chloe?" Naya was silent and Kane continued talking "Come on, Cee-Cee you know you want to know. Ask me where the fuck I am?" Kane yelled over the phone.

"Where are you?"

Naya asked in between quick breathes. Her heart was pounding and it was out of control. For a second, she thought she was going to have a panic attack but she refused to. Naya refused to give Kane the satisfaction.

"Where are you, Kane?" She asked again.

"Wouldn't you like to know? Now, stand still Chloe... pacing would give you a headache" Kane told her.

Naya stopped pacing and a million things ran through her mind and then it finally stuck. He had her under surveillance. 

Naya needed to be sure which type of surveillance. Pointing her middle finger up like she was telling Kane to screw himself. She waited for Kane to point it out. It was the only way she would know whether it was video or audio bug.

"How did you know I was pacing?" Naya asked him.

"You pace when you are threatened. I used to like that about you. You ability to bend over backwards to please me. It was a good quality" Kane taunted her.

Naya stopped pacing.

"Didn't you hear? Chloe Cleopatra Whitmore died years ago. I am Naya and I bite back....real hard, bitch. So, I am going to do you a favor and give you the chance to hid under a rock, Kane"
