Elixir stared at Mckenna. She appeared cool and collected.
"I don't understand what you are saying" Elixir sounded confused.
Mckenna spared her a glance but she looked away.
"You are a great mother. The best I have seen. You don't have to worry about me. Go and be with your son" Mckenna said instead.
"Mckenna, you know I care about you" Elixir reminded her.
"I know...God, I know and it's why sometimes I forget that you are not my mother. You are Jason's mother. Jackson is not my father. He is Amazing's father" Mckenna tried to hide her tears "Don't ever call me Donna again... throwing the name of the family that rejected me in my face when I was terrified of losing both husband and child was really uncalled for. I almost got them killed, I have to live with that but I thought, come rain or sunshine that you will be in my corner. So, give me a minute to try and get over my guilt before I faced them and tell them I almost got them killed. I need the ladies room" Mckenna stood up and walked away.
When she came back an hour later, she went straight to Kara's room.
Naya was sitting in the armchair in the room. She looked exhausted and her eyes were closed.
Mckenna sat on the bed and she touched Kara's hair. She looked at her little face, so innocent and beautiful. The idea that someone tried to harm her instantly became unbearable.
Mckenna pressed her palm to her mouth to prevent the sobs that erupted through her body like vulcano from being audible. Her body shook as relief flooded her.
Naya opened her eyes. She wasn't really asleep. She could see McKenna's body, it didn't take a second to figure out that she was crying.
Naya wanted to comfort her but she didn't know how. She was never good at it. So she simply pretended like she was asleep.
"Umma?" Kara called out softly before she opened her eyes.
Mckenna quickly wiped her face and put on a smile.
"Hey, baby girl. Who is a brave little girl?" Mckenna asked her.
"The bad man hurt daddy. He wouldn't wake up when I called his name" Kara was crying too.
"Hush now, baby girl. Your father is fine. And you are the bravest person I know, Kara but you must have been terrified?" Mckenna asked her.
Kara nodded "My tummy was hurting and daddy won't leave me. The bad man hurt daddy for not leaving me"
"You are safe, now Kara. The bad man...you don't have to worry about him" Mckenna reassured her.
"I am thirsty. Can I have water, mommy?"
"Of course, I will be right back" Mckenna kissed her hair and left to get water.
When she came back, she was already asleep and so, she decided to visit her sister.
Amazing was surrounded by family when she got there. Max was the first to hug Mckenna and then Joan. Jackson spared her a glance.
"How are you holding up?" Joan asked her.
"Good. How is Amazing doing? Has she regained consciousness yet?" Mckenna asked no one in particular.
"Not yet...the doctor says soon" Max answered.
Mckenna moved closer and sat by her bedside. Amazing looked nothing of her former self. One eye was swollen shut and the other almost looked the same. Kane really took out his rage on her. She looked like she was run over by a truck.
"Hey, Maze" Mckenna whispered like she could hear her. "You did great, sister. Naya said you didn't back down. I am sorry you got hurt. Sorry, I couldn't stop it"
"Kara" Amazing stirred slightly "Kara...he has Kara and Jason"
"She is awake!" Mckenna's excitement made everyone come closer to her.
"Kara...he has…"
"Kara and Jason are safe. You did good, little sister. You did good" Mckenna touched her cheek and smiled.
****
One week later.
Kara poured the cereal into a bowl and more milk than she actually needed while Naya stared at her in dismay.
"You are wasting milk, girl" Naya chastised her softly.
"Sorry! Can I go with Umma to the hospital today?" Kara asked.
It's been four days since she came back home after she was discharged and each day, she asked to go back.
Kara watched as Mckenna came down the stairs. She was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.
"Can I come with you today?"
"What did Naya say when you asked five seconds ago?" Mckenna asked with a raised eyebrow.
"I said no" Naya said and looked at Kara like she was telling the little girl that she knows about her little scheme.
"There is your answer. We will do a video call with you, I promise. I love you. I have to go" Mckenna placed a big kiss on her forehead.
"Love you too" Kara started stuffing her face with food
"Can I walk you out?" Naya asked Mckenna.
"Sure. Bye, Kara"
Naya walked Mckenna out to her car.
"I think I should just check into a motel. I don't want to inconvenience you anymore than I have to, Mckenna"
"Naya, why would you say something like that. You are family. You are Kara's mother and she needs you. Stay as long as you want" Mckenna said and entered the car.
"I want to see Kane. Did Elixir get me access to him?" Naya asked her.
"No. I haven't spoken to Elixir yet but I will. Kane is under lock and key, and he is heavily guarded until his sentencing. Donna and the Yagazies both want a pound of flesh. He is not going anywhere" Mckenna reassured her.
"How's Jason doing, now?" Naya asked her.
"He…" Mckenna's phone started to ring and she picked it up.
"Hello, Queenie. Yeah, I am on my way to you... yes...now" Mckenna turned to Naya "I have to go, Naya" Mckenna closed the door and drove off.
When she got to the hospital, she made it all the way to the floor that Jason was occupying. Mckenna hesitated for a second but she knocked. And she entered the room.
"Hey, baby"
Mckenna recognized the voice. She stared at her husband's face.
"Hey, yourself! You are looking stronger" she moved closer and kissed him.
After a few days of unconsciousness, Jason finally opened his eyes two days ago. It was McKenna's happiest moment.
"Have you seen my mom? She was asking for you earlier" Jason told her.
Mckenna had held off from telling him that she almost paid Kane enough money to disappear.
"Jason, I should let you know that I tried to pay Kane the ransom money and it was a bad call. Everyone told me but I didn't listen. I almost got you and Kara killed" Mckenna spoke very fast before she could chicken out.
"And I would have done the same, Mckenna. If it was a chance to get Kara back, I would have done it, too. Oma, I love you and I hate that you had to go through the hell of living last week alone. I am really... really sorry" Jason wondered how it must have beenfor her, alone... afraid and terrified of everything. It was no way to live
Mckenna let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in. She must have been holding it in all week and now, relief was slowly moving to every part of her body.
Jason sat up and rested his back on the pillow.
"Let's get married next month!" Jason told her.
Mckenna chuckled.
"I am very sure that we are married, Jason. It's probably your pain meds talking. Honey, you are stoned"
Jason was quiet for a moment before he spoke again.
"When I felt that bullet go through me, at first the pain was blinding but I dealt with that pain easily. Then these fleeting moments of regrets kept flashing through my mind. Then I saw you in a wedding dress, walking down the aisle to me. You looked beautiful. It was a wedding I promised you and it was at Casa Loma in Canada. Then I saw Kara as a grown beautiful woman and I was walking her down the aisle too. It doesn't make any sense, Mckenna. People with bullet wounds don't dream of weddings but somehow, I did. So, if you don't mind... let me give you a fairy tale wedding"
Mckenna was crying but it was tears of joy.
"Okay, Jason. I want that wedding and let's do it as soon as possible, okay?"
"Good because I just booked a venue for us in Casa Loma. We are getting married in three weeks, baby" Jason told her.
Mckenna was crying and laughing at the same time. She hugged him.
"I love you"
"I love you, more"
Jason was about to kiss his wife when they heard a knock on the door.
"Can you come back in five minutes? I am busy with my woman!" Jason yelled at the intruder.
The door opened nevertheless and Queen came inside. "This is not a five star hotel, bro"
"Hey, Queenie. You didn't have to come back to Nigeria for me. I am fine" Jason told his little sister.
"I had to make sure that you were alright and I didn't come alone"
Queenie opened the door wider and Jason's biological mother came inside.
