Chapter 79: The ground can't get lower

Elixir raced through the stairs even when everyone was telling her to stay back. If the ache in her knee and the exhausted lungs couldn't stop her then mere mortals could not. She eventually made it to the floor where Jason was and she felt the world stop.

For a second, what she saw was an image that would take years of therapy and alcohol for her to move on from. Her son was in his own pool of blood with one of his hands cuffed to the bed railing while the other hand held his child. He was pale like he was intentionally deprived of his blood. Elixir was frozen and that image stayed with her fit some minutes.

The paramedics she hired to follow her walked past her and pulled Jason away from his daughter.

"She has a pulse but she is unconscious!" One of the paramedic yelled "What about him"

The other paramedic checked for a pulse on Jason's neck "Gunshot wound to the abdomen. No pulse. Starting CPR" 

Elixir watched as they tried to restart his heart and she saw when they gave up.

"Checking for pulse...no pulse" 

Elixir pushed the people trying to resuscitate her son out of the way. And she started performing CPR on him herself.

"Come on baby, you can't seriously leave me here... would you? Come on, Jason! I didn't raise a quitter. Fight sweetheart...if you love me, you would fight... because, if you don't..if you don't come back to me, I will come to you. Jason!"

Elixir kept doing the compression on the chest.

"Pulse check, stop compression ma!"

Elixir reluctantly obeyed.

She watched the paramedic's face and she saw when a tiny smile appeared on his face. "I have a pulse. It's weak but it's there"

"Thank you! Thank you!" 

She got out of the way as they placed both of them on a plastic gurney and out the door they went.

Elixir stared at her hand and clothes, she had blood on them. She pulled her shirt up and wiped her eyes with them.

When she came down, the ambulance was gone. She entered her car and her driver drove off .

When she got to the hospital, another ambulance was pulling up. Naya and Chike came down first, then followed by someone she hardly recognized.

"Where are they?!" Naya rushed to meet her.

She first saw the blood on Elixir and she took a step back. "Are they...are they dead?" 

"Kara is unconscious. Jason was shot. He has a pulse" Elixir replied like she was a robot and she can't feel anything.

"He is Jason. He will be fine. Has anyone told Mckenna?" Chike asked.

"Good lord! I didn't even think of her. I will give her a call" Elixir said but Chike interrupted her.

"I will do it" Chike walked away to make the call as they pushed Amazing into the hospital.

"Who is that?" Elixir asked Naya as they walked inside the hospital.

"Amazing Donna, Kane tried to kill her" Naya explained to her.

"Poor child!"

"Don't pity her... she gave as much as she took. Thanks to her, Kane will need surgery on both feet. They have to pull out a car key from one ear and do something about his blindness. She didn't go down with a fight" Naya explained further.

"Attagirl! She is a Donna, after all. They are as vindictive as they come. Someone should call her father" 

Chike made it to the tree by the fence and he dialed McKenna's number.

"Hi, Mckenna. We found them"

When Mckenna got to the hospital, she took a seat as far away from the rest of the family. She stared at the clock and avoided looking at her mother in law.

Soon, Jackson, Joan and Max rushed inside.

He had a look of anger on his face as he went straight to attack Elixir verbally.

"What did you get my daughter into, Elixir?!" Jackson yelled at Elixir.

"Me? Your daughter was the one that was dating a psychopath! She gave him details on how to kidnap my grandbaby and now, my son is fighting for his life! Donna's are bad news like always!" Elixir yelled back 

Mckenna didn't try to stop both of them from tearing each other apart. She simply kept staring at the clock.

"Everybody, shut up!" Naya yelled.

It got their attention and they both stared at her in surprise. Naya just shushed two most powerful families in the continent.

She turned to Jackson and yelled at him.

"Your daughter is a freaking warrior princess...a super hero and she is fighting for her life right this moment but you are more concerned about a hundred year old family feud?"

Then she spoke to Elixir "Your son... your son is a blessing to the universe and he is equally fighting for his life. This world? This world can't lose him. I can't lose him, his wife and daughter needs him. I am going to focus on praying for him if both of you will do me a favor and shut the hell up!"

Naya turned to go back to her seat but she stopped to say something to Elixir.

"His daughter...even when she was battered and in pain, she didn't stop asking him where he kept your Son and grandchild. It's why Kane has a broken glass on his left foot. So, cut her some slack, okay? And sorry I yelled at both of you"

Mckenna started laughing. She was hysterical for a minute.

"Mckenna, are you alright?" Chike asked her.

"Me? I am fantastic. Chike, I am not the one fighting for her life" She stood up and walked out the door.

"I called Elena. She is coming. She speaks fluent Mckenna" Chike told everyone.

Mckenna came back ten minutes later with soft drinks and snacks.

"We should all eat. It's going to be awhile before any of them are out of surgery" Nobody argued with her. They all took drinks and snacks she gave to them.

She went back to staring at the clock and only looked away when her brother, Max came to sit with her.

"Do you think they will be okay?" Max asked her.

"Everything will work out just fine, buddy. Just wait and see, I promise"

One hour after Elena got to the hospital, the doctor came out with information.

"Kara's appendicitis surgery was successful. You can go in small groups to see her. Who wants to go first?"

Relief was visibly on everyone's face.

"Kara's mom and grandma, will go first and then the rest later" Mckenna said out loud before anyone could say anything.

"No, we are all going to go and see her" Naya said.

Mckenna stood up. "I need to use the ladies room. I will join you guys, later" 

Mckenna walked away and Elena went with her.

Naya and Elixir entered the VIP hospital suite to see Kara. At first she was unconscious and then she regained consciousness.

"Hey, Kara" Naya touched her hair.

"Mama...he found me" She said drowsily 

"You are safe, sweetheart" Elixir told her.

"Where is Dada? Where is my daddy?" Kara asked.

"Your father is fine. Just concentrate on resting, darling" Naya told her and kissed her hair.

"I want Umma" Kara said right before she dozed off.

When Elixir walked back to the waiting room, Mckenna was sitting there. She was staring at the clock again.

"Mckenna, you should…." Elixir was interrupted by another doctor.

"How is my son?" 

"He is still in surgery. I am Amazing's surgeon. She had a ruptured spleen that I fixed and two broken ribs. She is out of surgery and she is stable" 

"Can we see her?" Joan asked the doctor.

"Yes, of course" 

The Donna family left to visit Amazing leaving just Elixir, Elena, Chike and Mckenna in the waiting room. 

An hour later, Jason's doctor came with the news about his surgery.

"How is my son?" Elixir and everyone else stood up.

"He is out of surgery. We recovered the bullet and repaired the damages the bullet made but...we don't know how long his brain was deprived of oxygen and so, until he is conscious, we won't know for sure how much impact it had on his brain" The doctor told them.

"Thank you, doctor" Elixir told him.

"What's the worst case scenario?" Mckenna asked him.

"If his brain was deprived of oxygen for more than four minutes, he could be brain dead" the doctor answered.

"Alright" Mckenna murmured "Mom, you should go ahead and see him. I will join you shortly, I need to use the ladies room"

Elena tried to follow her again but Mckenna refused.

"No, I am fine. Elena, you and Chike should go with my mother in law. I will be there in a jiffy" Mckenna said and walked away.

Few minutes later, Elixir came back to the waiting room to find Mckenna there staring at the clock.

She sat down beside her.

"Are you alright?" Elixir asked her.

Mckenna turned to face her with two angry dots as eyes. 

"You are not my mother"
