Chapter 250: Involvement (2)

“Liliath-san.. is this.. truly alright?” I asked.

“No worries. I’ll handle it. I wouldn’t want my fellow race to perish would I now?” She looked at me with concern-- I noticed that small red spark in her eyes, “You too have to do your part. I know it may not be easy to part with them however.. this is the option you have lest you lose your life?”

I looked down, clenching my fists-- my teeth.

We continued walking without registering the faces of the nobles out in the hallway-- they were in preparations to leave.

“I’ll tell them my decision,” my voice quivered.

There were many things that remain unfounded. My future was uncertain. I was clueless as to how I should proceed.

Listening to their explanation was baffling, more so was the possibility of my death if I returned. No. That had already been expected.

Now would be: what do I do now?

I found him.

I found her.

I found them.

I didn’t think I’d find my purpose here..

-- Of all places.

Such serendipitousness. It came as a surprise, too abrupt, I didn’t know what to do-- but my choice was obvious. I only need to cement it.

I have to take advantage of this.

Even if I had to offer my everything in repayment.

I’ve already made that choice long ago..

To find a demon lord-- him. Noel-san.. sama.

But she too was a demon lord. Liliath-sama.

It wasn’t difficult to wrap my head around the truth, how Liliath-sama and Noel-sama.. sama weren't from the Bougainvillea household. I saw it with my own two eyes-- their abilities.

They were Irregulars.. somehow. 

“Rin-aneesan!”
“So you came just to announce your wish to ostracize yourself from us?”
I found myself facing the two. July-sama.. April-sama.

“Sorry,” I lowered my head, “I’ve made a choice to leave this house for good.”

“Hah?”

July-sama stared at my face as if he had seen a ghost. Eyes wide open, biting his lips.

I felt apologetic for saying such a thing in the midst of their meal but-- I had to. I didn't know when I’d come up with this courage again to speak my truth.

This decision felt right-- yet it hurt.

I just knew that I had to do it-- but every part of my body was telling me not to.

I could very easily make excuses-- but any one of those excuses would plunge my future in darkness, certain death.

Why did I trust them? Why did I trust him?

I scarcely knew him. We barely talked.

Yet..

Was it because we were both demon lords? Was it because I knew there was no other path out besides this?

I somehow knew that I would become a burden to him-- to his wife-- then I shall offer everything I have in atonement.

Was this a much better option than continuing to serve the Margrave? I didn’t know..

“What a-are you saying Rin-aneesan..” July-sama’s lips quivered.

“I can’t return..”

“Are you making a fool out of us? Did you think you could just resign without father’s permission? Are you an idiot?”

“No. I’m not an idiot,” I shook my head, gritting my teeth, “I should be dead in your eyes.”

I should’ve already died-- if not for his kindness. I owe my life to him.. which also means I now belong to..

April-sama stood up, the chair scraped the floor and created an unpleasant sound. 

She strode over and with her might. I shut my eyes and – the crisp ring of a slap resounded.

I opened my eyes.

Liliath-sama.

“She’s mine,” L-Liliath-sama was slapped?!
“Who are you? What is the purpose in inciting her to leave?!” Did April-sama not hate me? Why did she sound like she’d hate if I disappeared from her life?
“You should ask that butler of yours and listen to the truth yourself. You should understand the position you yourself are in.”

“Excuse me? Who are you to tell me that? You lowly commoner.”

I couldn’t see her face-- but I somehow knew that Liliath-sama-- she was smiling.

“I suppose I should take that as a compliment? After all, being a commoner does come with its upsides-- for example, there not a need to be forced into marriage..”

“Enough? Shall I take her and leave?”
“Rin-sanesan.. who’s that.. are you really leaving? Why?” July-sama tottered over and grabbed my shoulders.

“July-sama.. I can’t return..” I don’t want to return. But I don’t want to leave, “My death is the only thing awaiting me if I do..”

“Nonsense! What death?!” July-sama shouted.

A sense of dread washed over the room.

“I’m sure the truth will surface in time. Your haste judgement is the result of your ignorance.” Liliath-sama smiled.

Scary.. truely.

Was she trying to protect me?

Why did she protect me?

Didn’t he reject the likes of myself?

Why was she against him?

“Rin-san, who do you choose?”

I gazed at April-sama and July-sama-- then at Liliath-sama.

There was only one answer to begin with.

I lowered my head.

“This is goodbye. Please give the Margrave my farewells.”

“Why..”

Why did I choose this? I didn’t know either.. it just.. felt like the best option-- the only option.

“Rin-neesan I don’t want you to leave..”
“I don’t want to die..” after the fact I found him.

I couldn’t process this. Tears spilt. There was only one path left. I had to part from them. I had too..

“Where’s the butler?” April-sama asked in a sharp tone.

“Dunno,” Liliath-sama quipped.

“Maid-- no. Rinalanashina-san. What are you plotting?”

Hearing how she called out my name for the first time in years, I couldn’t help but shudder.

The words couldn’t form. Her gaze was pressuring, I couldn’t speak.

“Nothing. This is merely the conclusion we came to-to save her life.”

“I’m not talking to.. please explain,” April-sama bit her tongue and rephrased her sentence.

“Rin-san, are you ready to go? Any longer here would cause your decision to waver. That is not what you want, correct?”

I nodded timidly.

July-sama’s hand on my shoulders grew tighter.

“You’re not going anywhere,” he said.

“July-sama.. I’m sorry,” I said.

“Rin-aneesan is mine! You’re not taking her away from me!”

I held his wrist and tried to pry his hands off. The difference in our strength was obvious. Demon lord to human; he grimaced.

“July-sama.. thank you for everything.”
“W-Wait.. no.. how can you..”

I held Liliath-sama’s wrist.

With a bow, red light scattered into the surroundings and we appeared in the middle of a white garden. The lake in the distance, the blue sky overhead.

I fell to the snow and cried.

Liliath-san consoled me by stroking my hair.

I turned to her. Water covered my vision. I saw a soft smile on her face.

“Why?” I asked. Noel-sama wasn’t too fond of accepting me. So why?

“Rina-san,” she placed her hands on mine, “I can’t let you go. And even if he won’t make you his then.. all I need is to make you mine right?” her voice quivered.

Her eyes reflected my own.

Something felt wrong..

Something WAS wrong..

I received her soft embrace.

I couldn’t help but tremble.
