“Paula, this is Nora and she’ll be working here starting today. First, show her around the castle.” The head maid handed her over to a woman named Paula.

“I’m Nora Kranz. Nice to meet you.”

“I’m Paula. Nora Kranz… Aren’t you the singer at the founding ball? Why would you want to work at the royal castle?” Paula quickly walked forward, her reddish-brown hair swaying along the way.

Aristocratic ladies were generally taught to move slowly with elegance, but it seemed that speed was important for maids. But doing so and making sure it didn’t seem impudent might be rather difficult.

She wasn’t educated in a lot of things so this was a good start.

Nora nodded to herself and followed after Paula with a smile.

“Indeed, I performed at the founding ball, but that was just a stroke of luck. This time, I wanted to learn how to act like a graceful lady like Lady Andrea, so I asked for a favor.”

“Hmm… Well, in any case, you must learn the ins and outs of the castle. Then, you’ll have to do some chores. Even if you got here through your connections, you’ll still get in trouble if you don’t follow the protocols.”

“Understood. I look forward to working with you.” Nora answered with a smile, and for a moment Paula was at a loss for words.

The royal castle was humongous as Nora had imagined, so it took quite a while to navigate around it. After guiding her through the kitchen, the knight’s dwelling, the grand hall where the ball was held, etc., they finally headed towards the back of the castle.

“Up ahead is where the royal family lives. Even if you work in the castle, only a few people are allowed to go there. They told me to give you a special tour, so this is an exception.” She said before stopping in front of a door.

The door was wooden and painted white, with beautifully intricate flower and ivy decorations. The design wasn’t exactly gorgeous, but Nora could tell it was exquisite quality.

“This is the room of the queen, Lady Andrea Melnes, daughter of Marquis Melnes. Only a few of the best servants in the castle are allowed to serve in Lady Melnes’ chambers.”

It certainly would be a great honor to serve the future queen. This also meant that Andrea would be protected by a handful of the best.

This is going to be a great learning experience.

“Hey there, I don’t know what you’re smiling about, but no matter how strong your connections are, you can’t work for Lady Melnes right away. You should be able to do all the minimum chores first.”

That’s true. Even though I asked for it, I’d be a nuisance to others if I couldn’t work well. I’d have to learn and acquire the basic skills and know-hows first.

With strengthened determination, Nora straightened her back and looked at Paula.

“I know. I’ll do my best.”

“G-good. It’s good that you know. Well then, come over here.” She said as she ushered Nora to a small room with nothing but a sofa and a table.

“This room isn’t usually used, so it’s not regularly cleaned. There’s nothing expensive here, so it’s a good chance to see your skills. First, clean this room. All the cleaning supplies are here. I’ve already explained it earlier so you know what to do. Well then, I’ll leave this to you.” After saying that, Paula left the room.

At Nora’s feet was a bucket, a rag, a broom and a dustpan. She looked around the room again and noticed that it was very dusty. From a distance, she could see that the table was covered with dust and the surface of the sofa was somewhat dirty. In any case, the air was terrible as there was no proper ventilation.

She placed her hand on the window sill to open the window, and saw that visible finger marks were left at the area where she touched it. Apparently, the entire room was covered in dust.

“This is kinda…” Nora opened the window, rolled up her sleeves and smiled.

“All right, let’s do this.”

“Eh?” As soon as Paula opened the door to the room, she stopped in disbelief.

“Oh, thank goodness. I was about to look for you, Paula.” She was told to clean the room, but she didn’t know how long she should do it nor what she would do after she was done. This was a mistake on Nora’s part. In the future, it would be better to confirm her schedule for the day.

“L-let me ask you first… Have you done this before?”

“Um, yes? I cleaned the room as instructed, but is there any problem? If I need to redo it, feel free to let me know.”

Nora thought she did her best, but she didn’t know the basics of cleaning the royal castle, so there might be some areas she missed. She’ll take this opportunity to learn and remember it in the future.

Paula slowly roamed around the room with a rigid face.

I guess she wants to evaluate my workmanship.

Nora felt a little nervous as she followed behind Paula.
