“The table is back to its original color.”
“It sure was difficult to remove all the dust on it because they had already hardened. I think it was most likely due to oil stains.”
The tattered and begrimed table had completely regained its beautiful wood grain design.
“The sofa cover too… It was fading as I recall…”
“It wasn’t actually fading. It was just that dust and dirt had accumulated. I shook all the dust off with a cloth.”
The white and purple flower design on the pink fabric was now vividly visible.
“I thought the paint had peeled off of the window frame.”
“Yes, it had, so I got some paint and repainted it. I think it’s already dry, but please be careful just in case.”
She used a color that’s more yellowish instead of pure white, and it looked better than the original.
“The curtain’s white. Did you replace it?”
“No, it was gray due to the dust, so I simply washed it. It might still be a bit damp though.”
Although it seemed dry, it was a rather large cloth. It might not have completely dried yet.
“The room also smells fresh.”
“After airing the room out, I got some flowers from the gardener. It’s the scent of hyacinth.”
She had split the mixed white and purple hyacinths and placed one on each side of the sofa for symmetry.
Nora thought she had done her best, but Paula looked oddly stern.
“Is there any problem?”
“More like a question than a problem. A lot of questions, in fact… First of all, where did you wash the curtains? It is prohibited to wash from the closest well here.” Paula looked at her incredulously, but Nora simply nodded.
“Yes, I’ve heard of such rule, so I went to the well near the back door instead. We are allowed to wash there, are we not?”
“You knew about that? You went all the way there even though it’s quite a distance from here?”
“It’s a long way based on the tour you gave me, but there’s a shortcut if I go through the kitchen and that’s what I did.”

“Shortcut? I didn’t tell you about that.”
“Yes, but you showed me the floor plan before we toured around the castle. Based on that, I knew that the kitchen was in the middle of the two wells… so I passed through the kitchen. But is there a problem with that?”
There were certain ground rules for every working environment. If a newcomer wasn’t aware of it and violated it, it would lead to troubles, so Nora passed through the kitchen and showed courtesy to the gardener who was grooming the flowers as well as to the knight passing by.
The first important thing in a new job was to show courtesy. Nora was a veteran part-time job warrior, so she was naturally familiar with it and knew it well. Showing courtesy proved to work to her advantage; they had helped her carry the curtains and even shared some flowers with her.
“It’s no problem… So where did you get the paint?”
“The gardener asked one of the repair staff. The color was my own discretion though. I figured it would be better to use that color to match the surroundings instead of repainting it in pure white.
Paula’s eyes were getting narrower and narrower, and she seemed about to close her eyes completely any moment now.
“Is it better to repaint everything in pure white, after all?”
Then Paula sighed so deeply that the petals of the hyacinth almost seemed to scatter around.
“No, not really. It’s just that you didn’t need to repaint it. I just asked you to clean this room.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry. I acted on my own. Let’s just change it back. I think we can just scrape the paint off using a scrubbing brush.”
“No need, it’s beautiful—” Paula had been waving her hand to dismiss her suggestion, but for some reason she hurriedly covered her mouth.”
“All right. Then, is there anything else for me to clean?”
“Nothing else. That’s it for today. Please come again tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” As Nora smiled, Paula closed her eyes again and heaved a sigh.
The next day, Nora arrived a little earlier than the designated time, so she quickly changed her clothes and waited at the meeting place, the doorway for the servants. In addition to maids, people from the kitchen and food suppliers also came and went, and it was surprisingly crowded. After greeting them, Paula arrived shortly before the designation time.
“I see. That’s how you look to get people to help you. That may be fine in the city, but not in the castle. Be careful.”
Paula was educating Nora this morning as well.
I feel so grateful!
It was certainly important to help each other, but Nora, who was half the person she should be, shouldn’t depend on them forever or she would never grow. Just like what Paula said, she ought to pull herself together and work with all her might.
“Understood! I look forward to working with you again today.” Seeing Nora cheerfully reply, Paula furrowed her eyebrows in a slight frown.
