“I’ll kill you!”

The poor man who had been writhing in pain on the ground until seconds ago was gone, replaced by a bloodthirsty devil. Yes, it was a fight to the death now. Either I was going to kill him or he was going to kill me.

“Die!” He jumped on me.

I easily dodge the first punch he swung at my face by stepping aside. He used big moves with each of his attacks, trying to inflict as much damage on me as possible. Son of a bitch was like an open book for me. I knew every page in advance.

“Don’t evade my punches, you bastard!” He bellowed angrily and threw himself on me again.

I dodged a couple more punches, and on his first opening, I simply hit him in the face with my bat. He stumbled backward under the impact of my attack.

This simple move was enough to disrupt all the momentum the man had gathered since the beginning. Wasting no time, I gave him a solid kick in the stomach, smashing out all the air from his lungs.

“Ugh-” The man sank to the ground in pain, his face red from lack of breath.

I walked slowly towards him. Noticing my approach, he raised his hands in the air to beg for forgiveness.

“D-don’t... I beg...” He could hardly blurt out the words.

“Hmph, you’re too late to ask for forgiveness.” I raised my bat in the air. We had come to the end. I was going to finish him.

“Stop!”

The sudden sound made me hesitate for a moment. It was the voice of the woman I had ignored since I entered the room. She was pointing her gun at me, ordering me to stop in all seriousness.

“What are you doing?” I felt the need to ask. I couldn’t understand why she was pointing a gun at me.

“Throw the bat on the ground and get away from the man! Immediately!” she ordered.

“Hey, you realize these guys were trying to fuck you seconds ago, right?” I tried to convince the woman.

”I know," she said. Her answer was short and to the point.

“Then why the fuck are you blocking me?” I insisted.

“It doesn’t matter what they try to do to me. I’m a cop, and I can’t let a person get killed in front of me,” she said, looking disgustedly at the man on the floor, “even though they’re useless bastards.”

“Heh, a zombie outbreak just hit the world and you are still trying to protect your job. Seriously?” Her naivety annoyed me. I couldn’t help being sarcastic.

“Look, I’m not happy about this either, but before I became a cop, I took an oath. And I have no intention of breaking my promise, so drop that bat.” She put her hand on the trigger, her eyes looking very determined.

At that moment, I was in a big dilemma. Should I really have forgiven this scumbag lying on the floor? But the woman in front of me also looked quite serious. I had no intention of getting hurt by some worthless piece of shit. Especially in a zombie invasion.

“All right.” I sighed, throwing the bat away, “as you say.”

Her eyes lit up when she heard my answer. Obviously, she didn’t want to hurt me too. But she didn’t want to break her oath, either. She was principled enough to be respected.

“All right, get away from the man so I don’t have to shoot you by accident. If I shoot my savior, I cannot sleep from remorse,” she said, smiling warmly at me.

A sincere smile of a beautiful woman. It was enough to knock out most men. Well, I was no exception. Seeing her smile, my entire guard went down by itself. My body, stiff from the stress of the fight, slowly softened.

“Hehe, I wouldn’t want to be shot by a beautiful woman either.” I wanted to lower the tension between us with my silly joke.

Just as I was moving to approach the woman, the glow of an object on the ground caught my eye. When I turned my head to see what was going on, I saw that the man who had been lying helplessly on the ground seconds ago was about to stab me with the pocketknife he took out of his pocket. Not only me but also the woman in front of me must have seen this situation, she cried out;

“Look out!” The knife!” Although it was too late to warn me.

“Stupid bastard!” The man viciously stabbed the knife into my left leg.

“Agh,” I groaned in pain. I had no idea that a tiny pocketknife would hurt me so much.

The man tried to stab me for the second time, but I hastily kicked him in the stomach with my right foot. But I fell backward from the impact of the kick. The wound on my left leg made me lose my balance.

I took a glance at the man to see what had happened and realized he was still standing. Obviously, my kick wasn’t as strong as I wanted it to be.

In the worst possible position, I watched the man approach me, his pocketknife now looking more dangerous to me. Fuck, I guess he got me this time.

Bang*

The sound of a gun resounding like lightning in the wooden room saved me at the last moment.

“Agh, my leg!” The man, bellowing in pain, was holding his leg on the ground.

I turned to the woman in surprise. “What happened to not killing?”

She turned toward me with a nonchalant attitude. “I didn’t kill him, I just neutralized a scumbag,” she said, pointing to the man on the ground, “look, he’s braying like a pig, so he’s good to go.”

Looking at the man on the ground, I could see that he was just as confused as I was. We both stared at each other in pain, both injured in our left leg.

The comical sight filled me with a strange sense of pleasure, so I turned toward the woman with a slight smile. “Hehe, didn’t you say you going to keep the last bullet for yourself?”

“I trusted you.” She holstered her gun and approached me. “I feel you won’t fail my trust.”

This beautiful woman’s trust flattered my pride.

“By the way, we haven’t met yet. What’s your name?” With her help, I struggled to get up.

“Harper, Harper Braun.” Holding out her hand for a handshake, she stared at me. “You?”

“Victor Gray.” I took her tiny fingers in my hand. The softness of her palm gave me a pleasant feeling.

With her hair-like brown eyes staring at me, she said with a slight smile;

”Pleased to meet you, Victor."

“Pleased to meet you, Harper, me too.”
