The bell just rang about 30 seconds ago, and already half the class is empty. They wasted no time picking up their bags and leaving.
It’s to be expected considering that the majority of them already have plans. After all, the school campus is quite spacious, with various buildings that offer different forms of entertainment. Just because I don’t have any other plans besides sleep or eat, the world shouldn't stop for me. Ideal peace is slightly boring at times.
I would allow myself to feel better due to Tachibana sitting all by herself, but then I remember that it’s a choice, so it’s the same for me.
The other students who remained in class were copying notes, waiting on someone, or just outright sleeping.
As I tapped my fingers on the desk, a notification came on Yudell and based on the multiple sounds I heard, it’s a mass message. Simultaneously, Tachibana and I checked our smart watches.
Tapping on the Yudell application, it opened up.
______________________________________________________________________________
Today at 6 p.m., the student council will be accepting applications for an open position of assistant secretary. If you believe you’re qualified for the role, please come to the council room at the stated time. Note: Walk with completed application.
______________________________________________________________________________
The majority of the student council is made up of third year students, so some of them are retiring from their positions to focus on wrapping up their inter-class competitions and focus on preparing for the future outside of school.
Tachibana continued reading her book after relocking her watch.
I wonder if she is going to jump at the chance to be a part of the student council.
In an attempt to scratch my curiosity itch, I opened my mouth, but before the words could come out, Tachibana immediately said, "No, I have no interest in the student council, so don’t even bother asking."
She read my mind.
"Geez, you esper, at least allow me to finish asking the question before shutting me down."
"I noticed the ludicrous look on your face and realized that you were going to say something equally preposterous, so the safest option was to nip it in the bud."
"First and foremost, I didn’t have a ludicrous look on my face, and secondly, why not? It will look good on applications."
"Your lack of memory is concerning, because I am sure you realize that with my family’s name, activities such as those aren’t required for me to appear extraordinary and a cut above the rest. People just automatically make that assumption."
Still, I believe some children from wealthy families have it rough in regards to expectations especially when you come from a long line of successful members.
"So you’re one of those people who use their well-established forefathers as a crutch all throughout their entire lives?"
Even if she does, that isn’t an issue after all; it’s her birth right.
Tachibana slammed her book shut and then turned coldly towards me; I almost got goose bumps so I can safely say as of this moment she is relatively frightening.
"I have no intention of using my family name to get ahead in this school; if that were the case, I would be in A-Class right now. However, with my own strength alone, I can graduate in the top ten."
"Are you aware that it’s near impossible to do everything alone?"
My headstrong classmate let out an imperious snicker and replied, "It’s better to do things alone than be disappointed by ineffectual individuals."
I wonder what her definition of ineffectual is. Maybe she’s going by a modified version and not the dictionary meaning.
Letting out a minor yawn, I replied, "You seem to be stuck in your ways, so I won’t try to add anything more."
"At least you’re aware when to put an end to a conversation. Nevertheless, now that you’re a student at this school, once again I ask you what will be the goal you’re working towards."
Goal she says? I haven’t really thought about it since our supermarket conversation. I may have to write down a couple and achieve them, so I don’t feel as if I spent basically three years of my life doing nothing.
"I think I will become the student council president and rule the school with an iron fist, something along the lines of Vlad the Impaler." I replied in a joking manner.
Ruling the school sounds like a lot of work considering that you will have to battle all internal and external threats.
With one eyebrow raised, Tachibana asked, "Are you a sadistic and cruel person, Kaneko-kun?"
With a smile on my face, I answered, "I bleed live, laugh, and love. So I even have it tatted across my heart.”
She is unsure on how to respond to my outrageous statement. If there was a visual representation, it would probably be a gear turning in her head.
Shortly after she retorted, "You’re spewing utter ridiculousness if that is truly your goal."

"Will changing it to Julius Caesar, make you more inclined to register it as sensible?"
"I don’t think I will, considering you look like the type not to beware the ides of March so your hypothetical reign may be short lived."
The ides of March was a pretty avoidable incident and I don’t think I’m that ignorant when it comes to warnings.
"That’s an impolite thing to say, considering the fact that I have faith in myself to expertly account for it then utilize the betrayal to my advantage."
"With that statement, I believe you may have a future in politics, considering its all lies and backstabbing."
"Ah, yes, when I become prime minister, I am going to pass a law banning all scowls, so you may have to spend some time in the cell."
A frosty glare is shot at me as I finish my statement, so proceeding with caution right now is top priority.
She reopened her book and replied, "If scowls are banned, then I will have to fall back on my furrow expression."
"That’s technically the same thing."
"Is that right? Because I believe scowls are the ones banned, not furrows, next time please make a list."
Sigh. This cheeky girl is becoming a thorn in my side now.
I rose from my seat and stretched my arms.
Tachibana gave me the side-eye and asked, "Is there any reason why you refuse to wear the school blazer?"
"I feel constricted in it most of the time, so I decided to just roll with a casual look."
"That brazen choice just encapsulates your lackadaisical personality, which you proudly put on display time in and time out."
"Lackadaisical? I assumed it was more along the lines of "chill skater who just landed a sick trick."
"Unfortunately, that’s not the case so it is a surprise you can even hold a proper conversation."
I am being verbally flamed by a frost empress.
"If how we wear the uniform gives a hint of our personality, then based on how the cardigan vest nicely hugs your petite body reallyyy gives the feeling that you are keeping all your true feelings hidden inside."
In one swift motion, Tachibana swings the spine of the book she’s currently reading into my stomach, causing me to involuntarily hunch over.
"Another word from you, and I will double the force."
I made a T with my hands, silently calling for a timeout. I am scared the next hit may put me out of commission for a while.
While regaining my breath, I lean against my desk and complained, "That is a first-degree attempted murder."
"Since it is a reaction to what was previously said, I will chalk it up to the crime of passion."
Note to self: she is considered hostile, so please act with prudence.
"First you stepped on my shoe, then you pinched me, and now with the book assault, I am starting to think that you get pleasure from inflicting pain on my person."
Tachibana calmly waved the book in the air. "I feel nothing what so ever, but troublemakers such as you deserve regular punishment by their victims."
"I don’t see how you are a victim in any way, shape, or form."
"Are you trying to imply that you’re truly the victim in all of this because if so, I would strongly refute that Kaneko-kun?”
She is a bit too stubborn for me and I 'm afraid that I may get physically assaulted by the book once again. Still, I am thankful it wasn’t an encyclopedia.
With that being said victory in this argument is slim to none, so a tactical retreat is required.
Letting out a deep sigh, I picked up my school bag from the side of my desk and I’ll admit out of everyone in the classroom. I do find myself talking to her the most for whatever reason. It can’t along the lines of us being friends considering she most likely views me as a troublesome fly. However, she can be seemingly regular once in a while but the majority of the time I still find her vexing.
When will I come across a pleasant woman in this school?
