‘There was another deadly shooting today on 14th and main st. The suspect has yet to be found by the police. Witnesses say he was wearing a black ski mask, and he stood at around 6” 2’...’
“Everyday it is the same thing. Doesn’t anything good ever happen here?” The channel changes with a push of the button on my remote. “Isn’t there anything good on? This is why no one uses cable tv.” I continue to flip through the channels trying to find something good. I also look around at my lavish skyrise apartment.
The place is dirty with clothes strewn all over the floor. There are empty food boxes that I have yet to throw away. Standing up, I walk over to the large window. As I get close I can see my own features looking back at me. I always hated what I looked like. I scrunch my brows at the figure and continue towards the window. Once my reflection disappears I put my face towards the window, and I look out over the sea of people.
“They are just going about their busy bee lives, like a bunch of ants.” The colony of people on the ground move across streets or enter other large buildings adjacent to the building housing my skyrise apartment. I never really understood other people. “How can they just crowd these streets in these daylight hours? Night is more to my liking.”
‘Ring Ring, wake up big sis, Ring Ring…’ I realize I shouldn’t have let my little sister set the ringtone as I walk towards the counter of my kitchen and pick up my cell phone. “What’s up Ahri? You know I don’t like…” I am cut off as she starts to speak rapidly into the phone.
“Listen, big sis are you in your apartment? Please, this is urgent.”
“Yea, what’s wrong?”
“You need to come to….” The call starts to go static. “...classmate… dead…”
The phone hangs up, and I immediately start to try and reach her again; however no matter how many times I call the other side doesn’t pick up. I try again and again to no avail. “What the hell Ahri? This isn’t even a good joke. What did she even say at the end? Someone is dead?”
I immediately ran over towards the door of my apartment after grabbing my bag. As I run down the hallway towards the elevator, I search in my contacts for Ahri’s best friend. I hold the phone to my ear as I push the elevator down button. My legs become restless as the phone rings and the elevator climbs floors. When the elevator reaches my floor it opens with a ding. “Amy, answer the damn phone.” I yell at the phone that just keeps ringing until eventually the ringing stops, and I hear Amy’s voice.
“What’s wrong? It is rare for you to call me, Liz.”
“Amy, is Ahri there with you?” I speak with urgency in my voice.
“No, she just left about an hour ago. She said she was going to the supermarket to pick up some things. She left with one of our classmates.”
“Alright, I am heading there now.” The elevator reached the bottom floor as I ended the call with Amy. As I ran out of the building cold air filled my lungs. I was ill equipped to deal with the cold air as I started shivering in my light clothing. I tried again to call my sister as I made my way towards the parking garage.
I entered my car and tossed my bag into the passenger seat before starting it. “Why won’t you answer my calls, Ahri?” I spoke out loud as the engine revved. I pulled out of the parking garage in a hurry towards the supermarket near my sister’s apartment which was shared by her best friend. As I entered traffic, I couldn’t help but worry about my sister.

“This is why I hate this city.” I looked at the cars before me that were unmoving like a wall plastered in the street. Hours went by with me driving across the city through the slow traffic before I finally arrived at the supermarket. The sight that greeted me, however, was not a welcome one. There were police cruisers parked all around the parking lot, and there was yellow caution tape surrounding it. I parked my car on the street before bolting over towards the yellow tape.
As I reached the tape a police officer stood in front of me. “Ma’am, you are going to have to stop there. We can’t let anyone beyond this tape.”
“What is going on? Where is my sister? She was here…” I looked to the side of the police officer, and as I did, I spotted one of my sisters blue sneakers lying on the ground behind him. “That is my sister’s!” I pushed past him and the yellow tape before he could stop me. When I entered the scene, I saw the bloody form of my little sister being loaded on a stretcher.
“No…” I started to shake my head as I watched them begin to cover her body with a tarp. I ran over to the stretcher. “What are you doing!? This is my sister!” I yelled at the EMT’s that were doing this to her. I placed my arms around my little sister before anyone could grab me. “Hey, Ahri! What is wrong?” Deep down I already knew, but the EMT next to me spoke words that were gut wrenching.
“Your sister… is gone.” I shook my head as I continued to hug her lifeless body. I stroked her hair with my hand. “It is going to be okay. I am here little sis! I will never leave you again! You are going to be okay.” Tears started to flood my eyes. It was like a damn had broken as I started to cry. The officer pulled me away from the stretcher. I struggled to fight against his pulling, but he was much stronger than me. As he pulled me away, I blacked out.
“Big sis, thank you so much for everything.” I was in a black space staring at a floating translucent version of my sister. “What do you mean? You were the one that gave me everything. After mom and dad…” I started to do the one thing I swore I wouldn’t do after our parents passed away. I started to cry in front of my little sister. I tried to hold it in, but the tears came out despite my best efforts. “I am sorry for dying before you big sis.” How could she smile while she said that? It was a lie. There is no way she could be dead.
“What you saw wasn’t a lie, big sis…” She paused and I thought my heart was going to shatter. There was no way it could be true. I watched my little sister grow up. She couldn’t die so easily. She was always stronger than me. She wasn’t afraid to face the main issue. She wouldn’t run away from everything like I did. She was proud of herself, and I was proud of her. I felt her warm hands caress my cheek as she looked into my eyes. “You need to listen to me big sis. My life has ended, but I wasn’t meant to die yet. My life was taken from me.”
“What am I supposed to do? Without you I will end up feeling even more lost. What do you mean your life was taken? Can’t we just take it back? You can take my life if you want to. I will give you anything. Please…” The form of myself that I hated was reflected in her eyes. She started becoming even more translucent as I felt something flow into me from her.
“You are a strong big sis, and I believe in you. I am sorry, but with this you will grow.” I saw her fade away before my very eyes after she placed a kiss on my cheek. My hands went through her fading form, and I could no longer grasp her before she faded into nothingness.
When my eyes shot open I was lying down. The ceiling above me was white, and I heard the rhythmic beeping of what could only be a heart rate monitor beside me. When I looked over it was confirmed by the green screen before my eyes. Then I heard someone speak from the other side of me. “I see, you are awake. You gave us quite the scare.”
When I looked over I saw the figure of a black haired man wearing scrubs. I shot up in a hurry, but I regretted it as pain flooded my head. I closed my eyes and grasped my head with my hand. I then felt a hand on my shoulder. “Easy there, you just woke up from a coma. You were out for days following your heart attack.”
When I opened my eyes and looked at him he gave me a warm smile. “I had a heart attack?” He nodded at me. “You did witness something horrible after all.”
I witnessed something horrible? Suddenly, the lifeless form of my sister came to mind. The heart rate monitor started beeping more frequently as the memory came back to me. “Where is my sister!?” Instead of answering immediately his face turned into one of sorrow. After a few seconds he answered my question. “Your sister is gone…”
