Right, my sister is gone. I still remember her precious smile. Like a wave the tears leave my eyes as I remember growing up together with her. I swore I would protect her from everything from the moment I laid eyes on her. I remember her little hands grabbing my finger when our parents brought her home. Her cute baby cheeks betrayed all that was evil in the world. On that day I swore I would protect her.
The years went by with my sister and I growing up together. She was my light when our parents passed away while I was in highschool. She was so much stronger than me and better at everything. Ahri didn’t deserve this. I was pulled from my distraction by the doctor next to me.
“I know it must be hard, but you need to be strong now. I am sure your sister would say the same. It is very clear to me that you were close.” I nodded, my tears had stopped flowing. It seems that I cried all of my tears in this hospital room. I wiped the tears from my face remembering what my sister had said to me. Her life was taken from her. I looked over to the doctor who was staring at me with worry evident in his face. “When can I leave here? I need to mourn my sister.”
“You can actually be discharged today. All signs show that your condition has stabilized. As you leave be sure to visit the pharmacy. They have some medication that might ease any lingering pain. I have prescribed for you to take it as needed.” I started to get up from the hospital bed and he helped me get down. Then we both walked over to the Pharmaceutical reception together. “Do you have anyone to pick you up?” He stated as we walked.
“No, I will just take the bus.” We arrived at the counter to receive prescriptions, and the nurse behind it smiled at me. “I am glad to see that you are doing well, miss Alandra.” Elizabeth Alandra was my full name. Obviously the doctors and nurses at the hospital would know it. “I am as good as I can be…”
“Right, I’m sorry about your sister.” Her smile turned wry before she continued. “I will fetch the medication from the back. Give me one moment. She got off of her chair and headed towards one of the medicine cabinets in the back. “I am sorry if she said something insensitive.” The doctor who was beside me spoke up, but I waved my hand. “Please don’t mind it. This is something that I am going to have to live with now.”
I have had to live through so many traumas. The loss of my sister will most likely go to the top of that list. I still couldn’t believe she was gone. I wish I would have spent more time with her in recent years. I rapidly shook my head as the receptionist returned with a bag of medication. “Now, let me explain how these medications work. When symptoms of pain start to appear, take 2 and they should ease the pain within 30 minutes. The most common side effects are vomiting and sweating. If the symptoms worsen, please visit us again.” As she finished the explanation she handed me the bag. I wished it would help with the mental pain I would be experiencing.
“Well you are all set to discharge now. Do you need someone to walk you towards the bus stop?” I shook my head, and he gestured with his arms towards the hospital reception area. “Now follow me and we will get you out of here. Feel free to call me should anything happen.” He smiled at me before walking back down the hall towards one of the hospital rooms. I walked to the main hospital reception where I was successfully discharged.
Cold air filled my lungs again as I walked out of the hospital. I felt my heart rate increase along with the cold wind sending goosebumps up my body. The air was not cold enough to need a jacket, but it was enough to remind me of the moments leading up to discovering my sister’s corpse.
I continued my walk over towards the bus stop to find one that was parked there already awaiting passengers. The door to the bus opened as I stepped in. I still had my wallet with me, and I am sure the hospital would be sending a bill to my address soon. I fumbled through my bag and found my wallet. After that I handed the driver a $5 bill and found my seat on the bus. It was $5 to get from the hospital to my apartment. I knew that because I had to take this very same route when my sister had gotten sick before I bought my car.
I looked at my phone to see several missed calls from Ahri’s friends, and as I did I almost started to cry again. The bus took off from the parking lot despite my inner turmoil. It drove across the city stopping at many stops to either let passengers in or out. When it finally arrived at my stop, I was almost too zoned out to notice. I quickly grabbed my bag. Then I apologized to the driver for making him wait while I was in a different world.
I got out of the bus and looked up at the skyscraper that housed my apartment. I would give it all up just to see her smile again, I thought as I entered the building. There were several people coming in and out wearing fancy suits or dresses. This was a lavish place after all. The only reason I could afford such a place was from the stock market. I had invested all of the money my parents left for me when they passed on. My sister saved hers, and she was going to use it for college. She didn’t even make it to her senior year of highschool. “She was only 15”. I said as I entered the elevator.
The elevator climbed all the way to my floor. Entering my apartment, I noticed it was still a wreck. My sister always hated to see me living like this when she came over. I stumbled over to the counter in the kitchen, and after dropping what I had on me down there, I made it over to my room. The large room that housed my king sized mattress was in an even worse state than the living room. It had so much trash, you could probably fill a dump. I pushed some trash out of the way and hobbled over to the mattress.
Once I reached it I flopped onto my back and placed an arm over my head. Then the emotions came out of me like a wave. I cried my eyes out. I sobbed and sobbed until snot was coming out of my nose. As the day started to turn to night sleep took my mournful soul.
I was again in a black space floating, and in front of me was a translucent girl that I recognized. I floated over to her and wrapped her in a warm hug without saying anything. Surprisingly my arms didn’t go through her this time. We didn’t say anything to each other as she returned my embrace. I had so much I wanted to tell her, but more than anything I wanted to feel that she was still here. It took a while, but eventually I let go of her. She was smiling as I looked into her face. Then she looked to the side awkwardly. “Big sis… There is something I need to tell you. Actually, there are many things I need to tell you.”
