Before beginning the short boat ride to the village, Max asks Zale a question.
“Hey, I sort of befriended a shark while I was out there, will there be an issue if I bring her along?” He asks with hopeful eyes.
“It’s no problem” He shakes his hand. “Many mer-people choose to keep pets to assist with daily life. Although you won’t be able to bring it into the village. I am wondering how you managed to tame a shark?” Zale raises an eyebrow.
“Ah, I just fed her a lot, I guess she learned to not bite the hand that feeds her.” Max turns his body to yell towards Whitey. “Whitey!” Seconds later an ominous fin protrudes from the water and races towards the boat. Not being able to slow down in time, Whitey hits the boat, making it sway unevenly. Zale grabs the edge of his seat to steady himself.
“Kid! Get your shark under control, she almost capsized the boat!” Zale glares at the enthusiastic shark, but Max is more occupied checking on Whitey. After a thorough inspection of Whitey, he apologizes.
“Sorry, she didn’t mean it, she was just excited to see me.” Max gives a final pat on her nose and uses healing magic like a doting parent. Turning back towards the old fisherman, he picks up the worn oars and begins rowing towards the village. Whitey following close behind the boat. Zale points him towards an aged hut on the outskirts.
“I built that hut myself when I was just a young man. I used to sneak off from my duties as Chief and relax.” He gazes at the hut lovingly before snapping out of his daze. “Well this is as far as your little shark can go” He says with a clap, “There aren't any wild animals that can harm her here and if she wears this necklace she won’t be attacked by any of my people.” Zale digs around in a trunk underneath his bench and tosses Max a large necklace with threaded shells.
After putting on the necklace and saying goodbye to Whitey, they beach the boat and walk towards the hut. Before reaching the door an annoyed mer-woman stomps towards them. “Dad! I thought I saw your boat coming in, Where have you been?!” With furrowed eyebrows and a red face she marches up to Zale demanding an answer. Zale holds up his hands trying to placate his furious daughter.
“Ahhh Nami, how beautiful you are! I was just out fishing when this human stumbled upon my boat.” He says gently, trying to distract her. She glaces in Max’s direction before hounding on her father again.
“Fishing! So where is all the fish you caught? I know you're just trying to dodge your responsibilities as Chief!” Poking his chest with each word. Zale sweats slightly as he searches for a way out.
Wanting to get on good terms with the apparent Chief, Max offers raw fish and prepared raw fish in each hand.
“I just happen to have some extra fish if that helps.” Attempting to mediate between the two parties. Nami completely ignores him while Zale’s eyes widen and snatches the two from his hands. Scrutinizing them thoroughly, he stares at Max.
“Where did you get these?” Zale asks. Nami stops her lecture and turns her attention to the dungeon drops, eyes widening as well, flicking her head towards the human.
“Ummm… I got them from a dungeon?” They continue to stare. “It’s that way?” Max points in the vague direction towards the dungeon, uncertain about the reaction he is getting. Zale cools his face while wrapping his arm around Max’s shoulder, smiling slyly.
“Max my friend… do you think you could find your way back to this dungeon?” Zale pauses hoping for a good answer. Nami breaks from her frozen state and nods slowly. Freezing in her stead, Max talks to the System.

‘Hey System, will there be a problem with showing them the dungeon?’
[There should be no problem guiding them to the dungeon, dungeons in this world are rare but not unheard of. The main difference is when they enter the dungeon it will not have an ‘end’ like when you enter. Dungeons for the natives of the world continue forever, most just farm the beginning levels for materials. But they will face the same monsters and animals you have.]
“Sure I don’t see why not.” Max finally responds. Zale retracts his arm hastily before jogging towards the village.
“Nami, show him around the village, I’m going to gather some hunters and prepare for the voyage!” Nami turns to face Max, distrust fills her eyes.
“You speak our language awfully good for a human, What's your name?” She crosses her arms. “And where did you pull those dungeon drops from? You haven’t got a bag on you.”
[The System has gifted you a storage ring]
Quickly shuffling his items around he shows Nami the storage ring on his finger. She relaxes her eyes and turns around, beckoning with hand to follow.
“My name is Max, I have a skill that allows me to learn languages quickly” He catches up to Nami, walking in line with her. “So is Zale still the Chief? He told me he retired.” Nami rolls her eyes.
“Yes he is still the Chief, he tries to skirt his job every once in a while.” She sighs, “Anyways tell me more about this dungeon.” They begin passing by huts as people wave to Nami and curiously watch Max. He awkwardly smiles at the observers.
“Well, the dungeon is completely underwater” She gives him a look. “Ah, I have a skill that lets me breathe underwater.” He explains, Nami shrugs in acceptance. “I didn’t go that deep into the dungeon, but there are small and large fish. Also, there is an octopus as the first boss.” Nami hums in thought.
“Okay, I’ll pass this on to my father, you will be sleeping in the guest house tonight, is that ok? Are you hungry?” A campfire lights the surrounding area as the sun begins to set. The smell of cooked fish stirs Max’s hunger.
“I could use a bite to eat” Nami motions for him to stay back while she approaches the mer-women cooking the fish. While she is chatting with the cook. Max is unable to hear the conversion, so he looks around. In the village center there is a stone statue of a mer-person. Houses circle the open area around the statue. Kids are playing in the waning daylight. Childish laughter fills Max’s heart with happiness. Nami walks back with two fishes and hands one to Max.
Having eaten the same things for the past couple of days the fish tastes amazing. Slightly seasoned with salt, it falls apart in his mouth. “Thank you for the fish, it tastes amazing.” He says with a full mouth. Strolling around the village they come to a small hut.
“This is where you will sleep for the night, I’ll come get you in the morning so don’t go wandering off.” Max nods in agreement, Nami pauses at the doorway before closing it. Leaving Max to sleep.
