Nox had thankfully activated her mirror magic as soon as the explosion happened so despite physic sending us flying, we weren't actually injured by the ordeal- just knocked out by the impact. I guess we might have had some brain damage, but I couldn't tell if either of us did.
"Thanks." I said cracking my neck.
"You obviously weren't going to."
"Yeah, my tiny DS wasn't going to help against that."
Nox chuckled, "I don't really see anyone around here."
"They probably got thrown elsewhere." I replied. "I'm sure they're fine. Quaza's with them." (You really should stop claiming things will be fine or it's going to be like you and Vern and wooded areas or ruins. - Nox) (Noted.)
"I gathered that from the fact you didn't immediately freak out that Hayli wasn't around."
"Nox, I can survive without her. I do however suggest we hurry up. In case they got their asses thrown into the other side of the border."
"Okay. Let's head for the campfire over there first." She pointed behind her to where a thin whisp of smoke could be seen between the sparse trees of the woods.
"Why?"
"Because they might be survivors or know where we are."
We made our way towards it, not really sneakily at all. The crunch of dry undergrowth only made me question how a train blowing up hadn't started a blaze. Even a single spark would have cause devastation. But that wasn't as important as the chance that someone we knew could have made the fire.
Nox motioned for me to slow as we approached, unfamiliar voices hitting our ears. They were harsh and angry, seeming upset at something or someone. We lowered ourselves to the ground and crawled to some bushes to take a looksie.
A group of demons, five in total were surrounding a human who was tied up. She was yawning, blonde hair tied into a ponytail. Her clothes were torn, and the style wasn't any that I recognized.
"I will ask you to reply again, human. Did you blow up that train?"
The human yawned again in response. Nox, meanwhile, being proactive decided to walk into the mess to see if she could calm whatever was clearly happening down.
"Hey, hey. What's happening here." My sister said approaching the crowd.
"Ha! I see a co-conspirator has arrived to free the guilty human."
"No? What?"
"Get her boys!" The very unwilling to talk demon yelled, every one of them preparing some sort of magic. This magic was then easily reflected by my sister's mirror magic into some vague direction.
"Did... we all miss?" One asked. I sometimes forgot Mirror Magic wasn't a thing most people had seen.
"Must have jumped the gun. But she saw how strong we are. I bet you're ready to surrender now, right?"
Nox sighed, "Can we just calm down and talk?"
"Talk? Like how you talked that train to death?"
"That doesn't make sense. You're clearly upset, but no one here is to blame for- and you're trying to use magic to attack me again. Why don't people listen to me." She sighed this time sending the magic back at them. And then tired of them she drew her blade and started to charge them. The uselessness of their magic and the tall form of an annoyed Nox meant the outcome of them running away, tails between their legs was as expected as the sun rising in the morning.
Eventually.
At this moment, they had gathered their hopes into a singular fighter, a bulky dude with a curved sword. He cracked his knuckles, and sighed, "I see whatever is going on with our magic means a fight on those grounds are out of the question, terrorist. So, if you have any honor: Fight me blade to blade."
Nox shook her head and beckoned him towards her. The man stepped forward thrusting with his sword towards my sister. Nox started to step back when the trajectory of the sword turned upwards towards her face. It was a simple motion to move her blade in position to block, a simple motion that allowed the demon to pivot his lead foot and swing his unarmed fist into Nox's side.
Nox let out a gasp of air and stumbled, giving time for the demon to slice at her just being stopped by Nox summoning an almost invisible shard of Mirror Magic, and the direction change with shard of metal that was stored with the first block.
"Fuck, I'm rusty." Nox complained.
"I thought we agreed, blade on blade human."
"I think that agreement became null and void when you punched me."
"A swordsman knows his fist is the best side arm."
"No. That's a knife. Or magic. Or anything that could block or parry a blade."
"Enough talk. Surrender. You are clearly outmatched here. Maybe the law will go light on you."
"Deities, why are weaklings always so overconfident. Terra. Can you just scare them away.
I groaned standing up, "Nox. Seriously, I know you always liked messing around when we were kids, but this is a serious, possibly life or death struggle."
"Another terrorist? Looks a lot weaker than you. She must be the brains of the operation."
"I would never suggest Terra as the brains of anything."
"Wow, I am touched by your kind words sis." I yawned and stretched, "But cute little me couldn't possible scare anyone."
"Terra, you know I mean."
"Yes. Yes. I do." I shook my head. "You guys should run before things turn... less than idea for you keeping all your blood in your veins."
"Oh? And how so, boisterous murderer?"
"Do what you did to her when she first walked in here. To me."
"Really? All of our magic at one girl? Are you that brave? Or that stupid."
"You're the stupid ones if you actually do it."
Nox laughed, "Oh, man. I hope you don't pass out like last time you mixed, Terra."
"I was a child, Nox."
"You heard the lady, boys. Let's show the humans what magic can do."
The group readied their magics, orbs of elements growing larger and larger. I was glad they were all energy based. DS worked best on those. The only issue in that group was light and dark- but those were rare. (Outside of the packets. In fact, most of them came from the residue of a single family of Light Magic users, who had invented the concept of the packets to begin with.) I yawned again, fights with magic were boring when all combined couldn't even hit what Caela did with her fire magic. That actually took effort. This wouldn't.
They fired, all in perfect unison towards me. I raised my hand and let the DS ball spread across my palm. The magic connected and them vanished into whatever the Dark Surface held. The demons looked even more confused. "They disappeared? You can't just make magic disappear? Where's the residue?"
"Terra. Scare them."
I could feel some strain, but it was manageable. I waited, feeling the magics mix somewhere in the back of my mind. And then I released it. A ball of general energy at this point that sped at the demons who immediately began to scream and run. It hit the ground behind them as they fled, not actually doing any noticeable damage. Still, they ran off, scared of its size and the fact that to their eyes, we two sisters were impervious to magic.
Nox yelled at them as they ran away, calling them cowards and jerks. I moved towards the tied-up human who was laughing at the fleeing demons. I cut the ropes with that strange black knife, easily slicing through them. I offered a hand to her and helped her up. She was around my height- a inch or two taller though in the boots I was stuck in she was a bit shorter than me. She eyed me over and then smiled.

"Um. Thanks?" The woman said, clearly still nervous.
Nox smiled, "You're welcome. What happened here exactly?"
"Oh, well first I woke up on a shore, I think south of here, and just started walking. Then I heard something explode and then those guys ran into me and said I blew up a train. I haven't even touched a train. By the way, where am I?"
"Okay. And you're in the Demon Kingdom."
"Ah. I have no idea where that is."
I was beginning to suspect something. "Are you Nana?"
Her eyes widened, "Oh! Yes, I- Wait, how did you know that? Are you a kir'foy'ta?"
"A what? No, we met a weird woman on the train earlier. Zurah?"
"Really? Hmm. You don't look like a kir'foy'ta so I'll let it go for now."
"Thanks. Shouldn't you be more worried your girlfriend was on a train that blew up."
"Eh, she has enough protection to survive that. I blow enough stuff up that she always has a few layers on her."
"Wait, you have explosion magic?" Nox asked.
"I can't use magic." Nana said shaking her head. Then she seemed to get an idea in her head. "Is that what those horn guys and you were using?"
"Them? Yes? My sister, yes? Me, complicated. Any who, how do you not know what magic is?"
"Oh, we're in the old world. Such quaint magic. Lara is probably so jealous- wherever they are."
"Anyways, are you okay?"
"Yep, yep. Who are you by the way?"
"I'm Nox Thornell." Nox said.
"And I'm Terra Thornell."
"Nana Kathe. Nice to meet you."
"Yes. You're much more easygoing than Zurah."
"She's probably nervous. She doesn't like to show it, but she is attached to me a bit too much. By the way, who did your back?"
"Okay, what does that even mean?"
"I mean, you're clearly transitioned. I doubt those boobies came naturally."
"Yeah, I drank a potion. Like a normal person."
"A potion?"
"Yeah. A potion. The brewed mixture of magic residue to create effects when ingested or in."
"Magic residue? Wait, you drink magic? How aren't you dead?"
"What do you think magic is?"
"You know. That stuff that comes from the ground."
"From the ground?"
"Yeah. Wait, hold on. I think a have a spare inker in my bag. Ah here." She pulled out a glass cannister with a long tube attached to it with what looked like that strange weapon from before attached to the end of it. She tapped her head a few times and mumbled something. A hand came out of her shadow and grabbed the device and in a few flicks of its wrist wrote something in the air. Then a burst of wind shot out and rustled the leaves behind it. "See, that's how magic works."
"What the fuck was that." I asked.
"The magic or the hand."
"Both."
"Rune Magic. I can't do it, but another me gave me part of her Contract Eternal to protect me. She usually stays in my shadow since a floating hand scares people."
"Rune Magic?"
"Yeah. You write a rune and release the power of its name."
"Can you read runes?"
"Not as well as Zurah, but yeah? Why?"
I looked over to Nox who was shrugging, "How'd you like to help us translate some runes in a cave?"
"Well, I probably should find Zurah sooner than later- but you did save me, and I don't know anything about here... so, yeah! I can do that."
"Really? That fast? Well, good." I turned to Nox, "So, before that. Sis?"
"I think it's best to try and find the others. After all, it's not like it'd be good idea to go back without Quaza."
I nodded. "Yeah. I just got off the Queen's bad side, I'd rather not get back on it."
Nox smiled, "Well, let's start off by having my sister use her magic locator power."
"Oh, yeah I have that." (How do you forget you have that? - Nox.) (How do you forget to bathe every day?) (Too tired. - Nox)
I closed my eyes and focused. I tuned out everything that wasn't Water Magic or whatever Quaza used, Plant Magic I think, (Technically it's Flora Magic, but that might be confused with Flower Magic which is technically a subsection of Flora magic but more specialized. - Quaza) (Thanks, nerd.) (You're lucky I like you, Terra. - Quaza) and then slowly expanded my range. It was annoying to have to deal with basic magics, that cluttered up the information in my head, but eventually, a familiar one appeared. Water magic. A day or so across the border. I informed my sister and new employee of this.
"Wonder why she's using Water- right, across the border. Even at a border town, tensions might be high if two Demons show up."
I nodded. "Yep. Shall we?"
"We shall."
And off we went, walking towards the future reunion with Quaza and Hayli. And a much sooner reunion with Caela who suddenly came running out of the woods, looking disheveled and tired. Before we could ask any questions, she grabbed me and yelled, "Hayli and Quaza are under control of a human!"
