[Editor's Note: Since the Authors of this work and series have asked me to do so, I have found and included articles in local papers and acquired via monetary means some excerpts from diaries and journals of locals. I apologize for the fact that some of these seem to be written in a way that is walking the line between bigotry and respect- but this was the best I could do for the area. The Diaries I acquired, I made sure to prioritize queer citizens as a counter to these future chapters.]

The Tournament of Magic: The Newest Local Fad or Military Recruitment Tool?

By

Henry V. Ballingcups

Otterburgh- A new craze has been shaking through the citizens of our fair city recently: a tournament of magic. It has been a month since the entrepreneurs came and gave the local area this economic boom that has brought towns all over together to watch and compete in this magic only gladiatorial battlefield. It is very popular among the youths as a past time or even a bit of sporting fun. However, some locals have a much sourer view of the tournament. Says one Alfred P. Quincy of 432 North Gertwood Street in Holdestock: "I do not trust the proprietors of this venture to have the best interest of the community in mind. The prize of a trip to the capital paid by the King's Guards seems more like a way to indoctrinate them into the military than anything. We need our boys here to farm and such and our girls to be doctors and lawyers or what not." Others view it as a scam meant to prey on us until our pockets are emptied before they move on. This writer has his own opinions on this matter but does not believe they matter and that only time will tell if this is fad, recruitment or a future tourism industry for our area.

Strange Girls Spotted in the Woods

By L.G. Bickerstock

Vale's Rest- Locals were in quite a tizzy this morning as unconfirmed reports of a duo of demons being spotted in the local woods was making the rounds. Last night two local lads, Henry Dansing and Henry Vansing of Vale's Rest, were exploring the woods at night, looking for rare mushrooms to sell at the local market, when they came across an encampment. There they saw two girls, sleeping. They had some thoughts of mischiefs in their heads before the older Henry spotted horns on the head of one of the girls. They then fled. When authorities humored them this morning, they only found the remains of a fire and no signs of the women. Most believe the boys just saw some sticks under the sleeping head of some travelers, though some are worried at a possible invasion from the vile demon hordes.

Local Man Forgets His Brother

By Gary H. Butts

West Times- Beloved Guard Captain Ulther Thornell was the subject of some confusion when he was spotted asking the local oracle an update on how his two sisters and brother were doing last week. It was quite an uproarious event that he forgot that he had two brothers, but it seems like Ulther is still rather confused since when discussions if the Duchy would protect the traitor Earth, Ulther seems confused why they were quote "Not using her new name?" One thinks that dirt eating is finally catching up to him.

Excerpt from the Diary of Rena Vailcarn

[....] until the blood was drained from it and then being unable to watch anymore, I left the butchery. I know it's the family business, but I must admit I cannot imagine being one. Since my beloved Fariah and best friend Brilea were busy, I instead went to take care of the front desk and take care of customers. My sister as always was more than happy to let me do that while she got the meat for the customers. Around five a woman came in. My sister greeted her by misgendering her twice, and different each time. I'd have chastised her, but she does this to everyone. I think it is time for her to have her eyes checked. The woman seemed to have been crying recently, the stains of tears still on her face. She asked for salted meat. I asked if she was going somewhere. She said to see if her family would let her hide out while she figured some things out. My sister gave her the meat, and she paid with coins that were much too oxidized for their coining dates. She had a familiar face. I think she might be related to someone my brother serves with over at the Duchess's. She asked about local gossip, so I mentioned the whole magic tournament that had become popular recently. She seemed intrigued by it but wouldn’t ask more about it. Anyways, besides that my day was as boring as always. I do hope Fairah gets that apprenticeship so we may elope away from this small dirt settlement together.

Dear Hornsbury,

I do find it odd that a local assassin I sent to the Duchy was found dead before he could arrive. I thought that he'd have the mind to not bother other travelers, but to think he would lose a fight to one with his magic is unthinkable. Please investigate this matter promptly. Your pay will be sent at completion of this task. We do not want to lose the prestige the high mother's gift has given us.

Yours,

P.T. Farnsworth.

Dear Farnsworth,

I have received your letter. I would hope send investigators to the area to see if they noticed any travelers beside our assassin on the route, if you could afford their pay. However, I think someone who could beat my hand-picked assassin might be good entertainment in the Magic Tournament. What says you?

Your humble servant,

J.L. Hornsbury

To Hornsbury,

Enclosed is the cash for two investigators. Spend wisely. Your suggestion for the tournament is being considered. Thank you for your service.
