Hayli

Terra jerked the carriage to a stop and motioned for us to get off. We walked to the side of the road while Terra turned the horse around and proceeded to spook it into a full canter down the path that we had come from.

"I don't think rolling into town with a stolen horse and carriage would be the best idea."

"Oh, are we close?"

"Yeah. Real close." She replied looking nervous. Cute.

"Aw, babe. Don't worry, I'm sure your parents will love me." I smile at her.

"My parents are dead."

"Oh, I-I-I-I m-mean..." I stammered in embarrassment.

"Nice one Hayli." Caela patted me on the back.

"Eh, it's fine. I've processed that already. Okay, I should probably get you up to speed. There's my older brother, Ulther and his wife Callie. They have their kids, Emily and ummm, I'm going to be honest I forgot my nephew's actual name. I just call him Ribbit. Because when he gets mad, he ribbits like a little frog. It's cute."

"Okay.  Got them committed to memory. Should I go by Faiche or?"

"Ah, yeah. That would be good. Caela should probably stick with Speirei as well."

"Aw. But that name has a bad mouth feel."

"We can just call you Caela and hope no one realizes you're a Candidate."

"I can see why Quaza made you a blood servant too."

"What does that even mean?"

I cough, "My love, my friend, should we not get going?"

"Right, sorry." Terra said walking forward.

I quickly lock my arm with hers and smile, "We need to make it look convincing right?"

"She just wants to be close to you." Caela said.

"Shut it!" I yelled back. (I mean I did, but still. If say Terra was a good girl- er, good girlfriend I mean, I'd ask her out for real when we made her come with us back to the capitol. After a nice break in her hometown. I mean we did deserve it for nearly getting killed in a catacomb, right?)

We soon came to the top of a small hill overlooking a few houses, the rest of the town somewhere else. Terra stared up the sun and counted on her fingers. She mumbled to herself and turned around to us, "Okay, we're good, Ulther should be at the training field with the recruits right now. Follow me."

We made our way down the hill, past a few houses and what I think were stores to a much more open area where lightly armored humans were sparing or attack dangerous training dummies. At the notice of a certain horned blonde one yelled, "Demon!" and we were surrounded. Terra rolled her eyes and walked past them, "We aren't in the Estate, Horace. Come on girls."

"But, how did you know... what?" The guard she pushed away stared at the ground while the others considered the fact that she was right and went back to swinging at the air.

Terra made her way behind a tall man who was chastising the form of two guards holding long bows. "No. That's not how you hold that. That's a good way to get your bow broken."

"Sorry sir!" The two saluted, their bows falling onto the ground with a thud.

The tall man flinched. "Okay, take five."

Terra whistled, "Shouldn't you have someone who can actually fire a bow be teaching them?"

The man jumped and turned around, "Terra! Wait, why are you back?"

"Umm, well... I kind of need a place for me and... my g-g-girlfriend and friend to lay low for... a bit."

"What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything. We just got betrayed by a very rich and very important man in the ruins of an underground settlement and... said man ended up... uh, dead."

"Seriously, Terra. Stop going into ruins, I am begging you."

"Eh heh."

"And... they are?"

"Oh! Yeah, this is Hayli. My girlfriend." Terra said wrapping her arm around my shoulder and pulling me next to her. "And the demon behind us is her friend slash marriage potential gauger, Caela."

"Okay. Well, nice to meet you both. Excuse me, I need to talk to my sister." Ulther grabbed Terra and dragged her a good distance away.

"He's tall." Caela said.

"This is where the twink grew up. Yeah, that makes sense for his ego."

After a minute Terra and Ulther returned, "Sorry. I just had to chat with Terra a bit. We have room for you. Though, I'm not sure what to say to Callie."

"That I'm Terra, formerly known as Earth."

"I'm not sure if she'll believe that."

"What is more me than bringing two non-humans home after disappearing for a good bit?"

"Almost dying in ruins."

"Exactly." Terra grinned. "Besides, Callie might just let us stay for the free babysitting alone."

"True. Well, I don't want you three going to my house without me. Terra, here's some coins, go to the cafe and just wait for me to get off duty."

Terra nodded, "I hope you like tea and bread."

"I like bread." Caela replied.

"I'd like a bath." I said following them.

"We can take one together later, Hayli." Terra said.

I grinned, face burning, "Oh, no. I don't think we'd get very clean if we did that, Terr-Terr."

Terra blushed and grumbled. Caela sighed, "Hayli, at least kiss her first."

"First? That's all I'll need to do."

"Need to?" Terra asked as she sat down at a table. We followed suit.

"Well, I don't think we'd need to do that stuff to make people believe we're dating."

"I don't think you need to kiss her either."

"I disagree."

Terra slammed her head onto the table and quickly stood up to go inside. I looked at Caela who shrugged.

"Please stop teasing, Cae."

Caela scoffed, "Hayli, your teasing Terra."

"She's teasing me."

"She's only responding to you."

"She told me she loved me yesterday!"

"That's flirting. She is playing your girlfriend remember."

"That's bad for my heart."

"Aren't you the daughter of an actress."

"Yes, but when she said it- it felt genuine. I don't think I can act as well as her."

"Is it acting?"

I coughed, "What?"

"I mean... maybe she likes you. Not love yet, but she is blushing a lot. You are too actually."

"I... come on, Cae. That would be nice but... I mean we just met and I..."

Caela let out a gasping type of laugh, "Just enjoy it. Ah, Terra's coming back."

My totally just pretend for now girlfriend placed some piping hot cups of tea in front of us both.

"I ordered a fish sandwich for Hayli and Jam and Ham one for Caela."

I thanked her while Caela seemed to be considering how ham and jam would taste together. Terra drowned a family of sugar cubes in her tea and stirred it before taking the tiniest sip and flinching, put her tea down and sticking her tongue out while she fanned it.

"How many rooms does your brother's place have?"

"Well, open? There's mine, which we can use. And Caela can take Vern's room."

"Are there any clothes there for us to you know... wear?" Caela asked.

"Only guys clothes unless Callie lets us take some."

"Is there any place to buy them here?"

"Um... there's a seamstress but... not really going to be help unless you want to stay here for a month."

"I think my father would be worried about me if I was here that long."

Terra seemed a bit peeved at me mentioning my father. Maybe she was remembering her own parents and getting sad? I sipped my tea, letting it burn down my throat. I leaned back, using my tail to stop me from tipping over and stared up. It was a cloudless sky, a blue ocean above me. I missed the cloudy skies of Hill Valley. Whenever the cycle was done, I wanted to take Terra with me to it. Wait. Why'd I think that? Stupid gay brain. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

A waiter arrived with our sandwiches, giving Caela and I a look that I was used to by now. I must say, Terra didn't order us awful food. I mean I like any fish, and Caela's very animated face going from 'hm' to 'HM' to 'mm mmmm" was a sign she liked her meal as well. Terra had some sandwich that she quickly devoured, like a ravenous beast, piece of it spraying on her as she did. We finished eating and just sat there for a few minutes before realizing that we still probably had some time until Ulther was done. I pulled out some graphite and grew an eleven by nine grid of dots. Might as well play something to pass the time. "Terra, I'll let you have the first line."

Terra rolled her eyes and took the graphite from my outstretched palm.

Terra

"Wow, Terra lost every round. And easily." Ulther said walking up and looking at our very box filled tablecloth.

"Shut up, Ulther." I replied standing up and stretching. I helped Hayli up, awkwardly locking elbows with her. We made our way to the Thornell abode. I tried to get Dione to talk to me again, but I was once again unable to. Was she mad at me? Whatever. I didn't need her right now anyways.

Ulther told us to wait outside while he went in. I could hear the sound of the kids greeting him, followed by a few seconds of silence, then Callie yelling, followed by a minute of silence and then Ulther opening the door, and telling me to come inside alone first.

As I entered, I heard the little voices of Ribbit and Emily yell in joy and then confusion. Emily looked up at me and asked, "Are you grandma's ghost?"

I shake my head, "No, no, Emily, Ribbit. I'm Terra. Your aunt."

Callie walked over to me and looked me over, "Birthday?"

"Third day of Leci."

"Favorite food."

"Those soft pretzels Olli and Quaza would sometimes bring me."

"What was the poem that Vern wrote for Olli that he got too embarrassed to give her?"

"A love poem written in a ACACBB rhyming style. He wasn't too embarrassed to give it to her, you and Avery stole and burned it to save him the embarrassment. "

"Huh. Guess Ulther was right about you being Terra, now. Kind of rude for them to deadname you on official documents. Ulther, don't leave her girlfriend and friend outside let them in."

Ulther nodded and opened the door. The kids immediately charged Hayli to play with her tail and ask Caela about her horns. Hayli tried desperately to keep her tail out of their reach while Caela told them she cursed by a forest witch for being a bad girl.

"Which one is your girlfriend, Terra?" Callie asked.

"Hayli." I replied, stealing cookies from the jar to bribe the kids to leave them alone. "The one with the tail."

"Okay kids, let's go let them go and rest up. I'm sure they must be tired."

"I get the bath first. The lovebirds always take so long." Caela joked.

"At least we get clean." Hayli retorted.

Caela snickered. "I hope so. You bathe four times a day."

Callie shook her head, "Terra, take your girl to your old room and point your friend to Vern's. I do expect you to follow the same rules you did before. Understand."

"Yes, Ma'am."

Callie clapped, "Great." And shooed us away.

Hayli and I went into our room, still as it was a few days ago. Hayli looked around at it, looking disappointed. She opened my dresses and closet and shook her head. "You wore this stuff?"

"Yeah, because I thought I was a guy."

"Even when I wasn't out, I didn't have this bad a fashion sense."

"I didn't have an actress mother. She probably had tons of nice fashions for you to copy." I reply, not mention the fact my mom was a pretty well-respected dressmaker.

"If we're going to be dating, I need you to wear clothing that makes you look good. Tomorrow, we are raiding your sister-in-law's old dresses." Hayli said sitting down on my bed. That was a very Hayli response. It was kind of reassuring to know that she'd force me to get new clothes no matter how we started dating. Fake dating. Well, I guess I'm considering it real regardless because it makes me happy.

I sat down next to her, "Aw, you don't think I look good?" I pouted.

Hayli's eye twitched and she took a deep breath and smiled, "My love you look cute no matter what you wear, but I want you to look your best, so everyone is jealous of me."

I rolled over past Hayli and screamed into a pillow. I could hear a please giggle from Hayli.

"I think going about this method style is a good idea."

I raised my head up to reply, "Method style?"

"It means we never stop acting like are actually dating, even when no one can see. It's just to get us so we never slip up."

"What would slipping up do?"

Hayli scowled, "I could have just run for the border with Caela and left you. It's not like I had to be wi- bring you."

"And leave your girlfriend to be arrested for murder?" I smiled.

Hayli narrowed her eyes and leaned back onto my stomach. "That's better."

We sat in silence, just relaxing while the faint sounds of my family eating and the water the tub going down the grain filled the air. I wondered how real Hayli wanted to make this. I mean I wasn't going to force anything, but... no. no. Don't think about that stuff. You're about to get into a tub with her. Wait! Was she serious about that?

There came a knock at the door. "You can use it now."

Hayli sat up and slid off my bed. "Well, come on." She said looking at me.

"I can wait."

"No, Caela already said we bathe together so that's part of the story. Now come on, the faster we get out."

I nodded my head and stood up and followed Hayli into the bath. I really hoped there was still hot water because that was probably the only way I was going to get to relax tonight.
