His eyelids twitched, and ever so slowly, they cracked open, and light entered his eyes, dilating his pupils. Wang Feng groggily laid on his futon, still sleepy and muttering ‘5 more minutes’. Unfortunately for him, it was not meant to be.
For some reason, today, he found his bed unbelievably uncomfortable- and it caused him to struggle around on his bed in his dazed state. Wang Feng determined that he wouldn’t be able to get any sleep like this, so he slowly sat up with a sigh, and leisurely brought his hand up to cover his mouth as he yawned.
Wang Feng just sat there for a minute or so in a sleepy, groggy mood; his eyes still closed. Slowly, he woke up enough to just look around, and wondered why his bed was so close to the ground, also why there was no furniture in his bedroom. Where did the mirror go? What about his closet? His bedhead was gone too? His pillow was also gone. And why were there two sheets just lying on the ground?
This was very, very weird. Wang Feng thought, ‘Am I still dreaming…?’
So, he did the first thing he would ever want to do in a lucid dream.
‘Back down I go.’
Wang Feng let his body fall back down on his bed, completely forgetting why he decided to get up. Luckily, solid matter did not change so easily. Unluckily, solid matter did not change so easily.
By the laws of this world’s gravity, Wang Feng’s head hit the futon, and that did not do much to cushion his fall. His head hit the solid that was the floor, and, well,
“AH, holy crepe!”
Wang Feng immediately rolled over as he brought his hands up to the back of his head, holding and randomly rubbing it to ease the pain. Around a minute passed before the pain somewhat faded away.
Now, completely awake, Wang Feng is sulking. He looks around and wonders, ‘Where am I?’ Clearly, he was not dreaming. Well, it was possible, but he wasn’t that deep a sleeper. Over time, his brows furrowed and a frown marred his face.
‘This place is so small.’ Wang Feng looked around and found a door. There were no windows or openings in this small room.
‘Now that I'm looking at it, the sect really cares so little about its disciples.’ Wang Feng questioned why he’d decided to join this sect, in particular. Probably because the region he was from was under the Blackwing Sect.
‘Eh? Hold on, what sect?’ Wang Feng noticed something wrong with his thoughts. He did not join any sect, or cult, or whatever. Wang Feng decided to just sit and stew in his thoughts, to collect his mind and think over everything.
‘So, I'm Wang Feng. Yes, of course I am.’ Wang Feng rolled his eyes at his own stupidity. How could he not know his name?
‘I'm 15 years old, a former village boy who went out in search of work at the city.’ Wang Feng was for some reason dubious of his own origins. He did not know why.
‘No, that’s wrong. I was born in the kingdom near the Blackwing sect, and would always dream of joining the sect.’ Now, Wang Feng knew something was truly wrong. He sat in silence as he calmed himself. Thinking it over, slowly he realised the problem with his memories.
‘So, I'm Wang Feng, formerly 22 years old. A guy who grew up in the city, found a job, and lived alone. I've crossed over into this cultivation world, and taken over the body of this teen boy. Haa~, the poor little guy.’
However, there was something weird.
‘I still have some of the memories of teen cultivator Feng in my head. I know which one I am but the memories are still messing with me.’ Wang Feng sighed; he did not know how these memories would affect his personality. He just hoped it wouldn’t be too bad.
A little down, but knowing that this was a world where might made right, Wang Feng decided he would need to scout out how his peers acted. Were they arrogant? Selfish? Kind? Cold? Unfortunately, teen cultivator Feng did not interact with others much, not even his 2 other roommates. Granted, none of them tried.
He could not cultivate either, teen Feng’s memories on how to circulate Qi were gone.
Wang Feng steadily stood up, and tidied himself. He looked down at his bed, or futon- he guessed, and got rid of the dust on it. He then proceeded to fold it. He looked at the other 2 futons in the room, and resisted his urge to do the same to them. His roomies might not like it. For a newbie cultivator like him, that was detrimental. They could Saitama him, for all he knew.
After he was finished, Wang Feng realised that there was a book underneath his futon.
‘What’s this?’ He picked up the book, and read the title. Luckily, the language was so ingrained in teen Feng that he knew it by instinct.
“Basics of Qi Refinement and Cultivation?” Wang Feng read it aloud due to his surprise, which slowly, but surely, turned into excitement. ‘I can try cultivating!’
Wang Feng postponed his plans to go outside, and decided to sit down and read this book.
A few hours passed as Wang Feng finished reading the book. There weren’t many pages, so it was an easy read. For someone like Wang Feng who liked to read every word, this was a blessing, as he believed he was quite the slow reader.
Wang Feng collated his thoughts on the book/manual.
‘It’s pretty amazing that cultivation is so similar to the novels back on earth. There's Qi Refinement, Foundation Establishment, and Core Formation. The latter two are briefly mentioned, since it focuses on the Qi Refinement Realm. Should I try it? Why not? YOLO!’
Wang Feng got into the lotus position. Luckily for him, human bodies of this world were quite flexible. If not, he was sure he would be screaming in pain right now.
‘Sensing Qi, huh? ‘Qi is sensed through the sixth sense. It feels like a small mote of light that is warm and fragile. A beginning cultivator should try sensing the Qi inside the body, before moving on to sense the external Qi of Heaven and Earth.’ I guess that’s what they're trying to say. These cultivators have too many flowery words.’
Wang Feng’s head was in pain after trying to figure out what the book was supposed to mean.
‘What the hell is, ‘Like the blossoming Ten-Flame Lotus, Qi shall move through the gates of life and blossom in the center, giving birth to nirvana.’ Is it just saying that circulating Qi feels good? Is that it? What the fuck is this shit?’
Wang Feng rarely cursed, mostly substituting any of his swear words with other things. But these cultivators’ ability to spew BS was on another level. Fortunately, cultivation novels allowed him a modicum of understanding towards these sentences.
‘I should practice sensing Qi first before anything. I don’t wanna damage any part of my body because of recklessness.’
In anxious excitement, Wang Feng focused on his inner self. He was prepared for something amazing to happen when he sensed Qi. What he was not prepared for was seeing fleshy vein type structures inside his body.
“Kya!” It gave him quite the scare, and he let out a girly scream, regaining his normal sight. Quickly, his fright turned into embarrassment, as he remembered what just happened.
“*Cough, cough*” Wang Feng looked around, thankful that he was still in his house, and no one had heard him.
Calming himself, Wang Feng once again tried using this new power he possessed. He assumed that this was something inside his body.
‘Could these be meridians? But why can’t I see my other organs? So weird.’ Wang Feng figured it would be hard to sense Qi if he kept on focusing on this new power, so, as excited as he was about it, he tried to empty his mind.
As time passed, hours went by until finally… he gave up, for now at least. Wang Feng had failed to feel anything. He had been prepared to not feel anything for maybe 1 or 2 hours, but to not even feel it after a whole 6 hours was honestly disparaging.
‘Haa~,’ Wang Feng sighed. He decided he might as well take a break. Maybe refresh his mind outside. Wang Feng slowly stood up from the lotus position, he did not want to fall down because he was sitting for too long. Thankfully, this was not his former world, and humans here were different in some ways. Even sitting for so long in such a stressing position did not hurt him.
It was easy to stand up, and once he did, Wang Feng tidied himself. Smoothed out his hair, made sure he wore his robes right, and finally, straightened his back. It was time to head out.
He moved, step by step steadily to the door, opened it and headed outside. Luckily, it would seem he had woken up in the early sunrise. The sun was still overhead, shining on its weary victims. By the position of the sun, it would seem to be around 3 o’clock, if time worked the same here. He hoped it did.
Wang Feng brought his gaze down from the blue sky and gazed around; on the dirt road, at the non-existent trees and the wooden, minimalistic, poverty-stricken huts around. The extremely few disciples that he could see wore brown martial robes that represented their poor status as Outer Sect Disciples, just like him. Overall, it was quite depressing. Every disciple that Wang Feng saw was either in a hurry or frowning, or both.
‘Wow, these guys look like they aren’t enjoying life.’ Wang Feng felt that cultivators were a gloomy bunch when he looked at these people.
Wang Feng walked onward. His main goal was exploration. To him, seeing new places was a joy, and refreshed him from the same old sights he would see. Personally, he did not like the first impressions he got from the cultivation world. But maybe it was only this sect, or this part of it. Frankly, it was depressing to see.
As depressing as it was, it was also amazing. To think that everything could look so mundanely the same. He had to give props to the architects, he could not even tell his own little hut from everybody else’s. Fortunately, there were some weeds near his so he shouldn’t have a hard time knowing which was his when he returned.
Wang Feng saw a lot of things as he grazed along; from bullying, to brawls, to little groups where others praised one person heavily. He wondered if those were young masters. He also saw the occasional weed, but overall, everything was the same. Wang Feng even saw the gates to the Inner Disciple’s Court. Unfortunately, he knew he would not be able to pass. From what he could see, it was a world of difference. There were trees, a stone pavement, and the buildings were upgraded to stone seemingly.
Honestly, still didn’t seem that nice.
Wang Feng found himself disliking the sect the more he saw.
‘By the gods- no wait, I should change that. Um~. Oh- I know. By the celestial emperor, or is it heavenly emperor, or maybe…’ Wang Feng’s mind slowly went on a tangent, ‘but what if there are gods. Wait, does a celestial/heavenly/immortal/… emperor even exist? Haa~ this is too hard; I’ll just stick with the norm.’
‘Anyways. By the eldritch gods, how could anyone even live like this? It’s so boring.’
As Wang Feng kept monologuing, he became curious as he noticed that the hurrying disciples were all heading in the same general direction. From teen Feng’s memories, he could vaguely recall that this was the Martial Arts Field.
At there, disciples would train any martial arts they learned on the dummies. They were capable of self-repair so they were extremely useful.
As Wang Feng followed some disciples, he reached the field. There, he saw disciples training for their lives. ‘Why are they trying so hard?’, he wondered. Seeing a few disciples talking, Wang Feng decided to eavesdrop. Quickly, he found two people who seemed unique.
“-way, how far have you gotten in the Flying Cloud Fist. I’ve already reached the second level.” This disciple smirked, proud of his feat.
“Actually, I reached the second level just yesterday. When did you reach it?” The other disciple casually answered.
The first disciple’s smile froze, before his face turned dark. He answered reluctantly, “…at noon…”
The second disciple’s face twitched, and he looked at the other in pity. “Cheer up, man.”
As Wang Feng listened in on them, he could tell they acted differently from most other disciples. Most others were gloomy while these two’s, and a few other groups’, expressions were more casual. This made him curious, why were they so different?
‘Their clothes are the typical outer disciple’s so they probably aren’t young masters. Should I talk to them?’, he wondered. As always, Wang Feng used the acronym he liked to use the most, ‘YOLO!’
Wang Feng put on his face an amiable smile, and widened his eyes a little. He also skipped over to them, all in an effort to seem harmless. Naturally, he did not know if it would work, but it was worth a try. Granted, this was all taken from anime.
Waving his hand at them, Wang Feng called in a soothing tone, “Excuse me, senior brothers.”
The two jumped in their skins, clearly not expecting the intruder’s voice.
The first disciple suddenly turned silent, and the second disciple seeing this, responded, “Oh, what is it?” Most likely because of calling them senior brothers, the disciple added on a “Junior brother” immediately after.
‘First contact success!’ Wang Feng’s amiable smile widened. “I was wondering, you two seem different from everyone else.”

The two disciples looked at each other in confusion, ‘What was this junior brother talking about?’
Seeing that they were confused by his words, Wang Feng expanded on it.
“Like, you two aren’t always so gloomy and in a hurry.”
The second disciple nodded at his words with a serious face, while the first disciple’s expression turned stony, though his face seemed to take on a shade of pink.
The second disciple looked at Wang Feng and nodded, “Junior brother, you think so as well?”
Wang Feng nodded, and the second disciple responded, “I agree. Our master said that you should enjoy life. Or the stress of daily life would wear you down. By the way, my name is Jin Wu, and this is Su Ling. We’re both under the same master. Don’t let looks fool you though, he’s my senior brother.”
It was as Jin Wu had said. Jin Wu was the burly type, while Su Ling was more the slim type of person. Jin Wu’s brown hair was short with same colored eyes, and Su Ling’s black hair was long; his eyes were grey.
“Oh, my name is Wang Feng. Nice to meet you, I'm just your normal outer disciple.” Wang Feng reciprocated. He was glad they weren’t arrogant young masters. ‘Still, to think the first people I spoke to would have a master.’
Curtly, Su Ling greeted, “Hi.”
“Excuse him, he’s a little shy in front of strangers.” Su Lin turned his head away as he squinted off into the distance.
“It’s no problem, I would be the same.”
Jin Wu’s mouth twitched at his words, clearly, he did not believe him, they were strangers themselves to Wang Feng. ‘This junior brother’s a little silly.’
Letting it slide, Jin Wu spoke, “But it’s pretty amazing. You don’t find a lot of disciples who would just go up and talk to others. For no reason, even.”
Wang Feng knew that as well, so he explained himself, “Well, I'm new to the sect and don’t know what exactly to do. So, junior brother is ignorant of a lot of formalities. Forgive me if I'm rude.”
Jin Wu was not very surprised by that; Wang Feng’s previous casual actions had shown him. Finding himself a little worried about this ditzy looking junior brother, he decided to give him some advice. “Oh, I can see that. You know, normally when greeting others, cultivators first salute the other person. Do you know how?”
“You mean like this?” Wang Feng clasp his left palm over his right fist.
“You have the right idea, but that’s wrong. Look-” Jin Wu found it a little incredulous that this junior brother did not even know how to do a proper salute, his question was rhetorical. He came closer to Wang Feng and changed the form of his left palm.
“Straighten your left palm like this. And hold your left hand’s thumb inside you right hand. Keep your arms above your chest, and stretch your arms out a little. Just like that.” Jin Wu looked at Wang Feng who was smiling happily, and found that he liked this ditzy looking junior brother more.
“How much you bow depends on your respect for the person and their status, but don’t overdo it or you'll just look like you're mocking them.”
Su Ling tugged at Jin Wu’s robe, who asked “What is it?”. Su Ling responded taciturnly, “We should get going soon,” and pointed to the sky.
Looking up at the sun, Jin Wu grunted in agreement. Seeing that time was running, Wang Feng asked the main question he wanted to, “By the way, is there any special event that’s up and coming? Since everybody’s working so hard.”
This time, the two senior brothers looked weirdly at Wang Feng, but with his thick skin, Wang Feng endured. Jin Wu replied, “Well, this is just how everyone is normally, us two included. If not, we’ll be left behind by the other disciples. You’ll have to be the same junior brother. In this world, only the strong have a say in anything.”
Su Ling nodded in agreement, as if common sense.
Wang Feng did not want to waste their time, so he said his goodbyes. Saluting how he was just taught, Wang Feng bowed at a slight angle, “Sayonara, senior brothers. I won’t take up any more of your time”
The two gazed at Wang Feng, then looked at each other in askance. Jin Wu was stuck wondering, but Su Ling responded in kind and Jin Wu followed, “Goodbye, junior brother.”
After separating, the two had differing thoughts on the junior brother they’d just met.
“This little brother’s a little silly.” (Jin Wu)
“He’s a little stupid.” (Su Ling)
Wang Feng wandered on, unknowing of how his two new acquaintances thought of him.
After some more exploration, Wang Feng headed back home. As he went back, he was reminded of how boring this place was.
‘I wonder what wouldn’t offend anyone that I could do.’ Wang Feng pondered as he walked along.
By chance, he saw a pretty flower as he passed by a near forest in the sect. This was a rare sight. That gave him an idea.
‘Why not cultivate some flowers? There’s nothing much to do other than cultivate, and taking care of them is pretty easy when you have Qi.’
With his decision in place, Wang Feng changed directions and got to work. He dug up a few flowers, and carried them with him. He only managed to find three, unfortunately; but these would do.
The first flower was blue and it was somewhat similar to pompoms in its overall shape, but was made up of many petals.
The second flower, he knew. With how much it was mentioned in Chinese novels, of course he knew. It was the chrysanthemum. Didn’t know anything else about it. Pretty cool that it looked the same as back on Earth, with few minor differences.
The third flower was yellow and white and had conspicuous flowers with six petal-like tepals surmounted by a cup or trumpet shaped corona.
Wang Feng slowly reached his house, crossing paths with no disciples. Most of them were either cultivating inside their huts or training at the field. He considered that good, who knew if anyone would try to steal his flowers.
As he came upon his hut, Wang Feng circled to the back, in between the hut next to his. Behind all the huts was, quite literally, a wall. The huts were all created in the direction facing the center of the sect, and was blocked off from the outside world through this wall. It was tall and created by the higher leveled cultivators.
So, most people would not see his flowers since few ever came back here. While that wasn’t a boon to him, he was weak now, so it would be best to attract little attention.
As he was transplanting the new flowers, Wang Feng did not know that soon, his cheat was about to arrive.
Up above, in the skies, an object was falling at meteoric speeds. Uncannily however, was the fact that it did not burn from friction. In fact, it was cold. It seemed to be a many-sided polygon, but because of its rapidly rotation as it burst past the clouds, it was impossible to tell.
Within seconds, it struck down on Wang Feng and pierced his body. Once it entered his body, Wang Feng was knocked unconscious and fell to the ground. Weirdly, it did not obliterate Wang Feng, and it did not create a hole through his body. Instead, it disappeared completely, unknown what exactly happened to it.
Wang Feng lay on the ground for a few hours. His eyes twitched, after which, they opened.
“Where am I? Don’t tell me, I died again?” Wang Feng guffawed in exasperation as he beheld his dark surroundings. On a second look, however, he found that there were light spots ever present in this darkness.
“What are those?”
He wondered if those were souls, perhaps this was how he looked now.
“Nope, still have my hands, and feet, and body. So, they probably aren’t souls.” As he contemplated on his current situation, Wang Feng chose to do the obvious.
“If you’re curious about something, touch it. Sound advice from a wonderful person- myself.” Wang Feng reached out his hand, and once he touched the golden mote of light, it phased into his body. Stunned for a moment, Wang Feng remembered his ability to look into himself.
So he did just that. When he did, he could see a gaseous golden vapor circling what he assumed was the meridians. With his quick mind, Wang Feng soon thought of what this was.
“Is this Qi?” The thought bred excitement in his heart. He didn’t think that he would have a windfall and be able to sense Qi so easily after a few hours of trying. But quickly, he became sad again.
“Unfortunately, I’ve already gone and died. If only I could return.” Wang Feng talked with a little sadness. Unexpectedly, his sentiment seemed to work, as he found himself staring at three flowers, newly planted in the ground at the dark of night.
“What the fudge?” Wang Feng could not wrap his head around what just happened. ‘Can I return?’
Again, Wang Feng was inside the dark space. “Could this be!?!? My CHEAT?!?! Hell YEAH!!!” Wang Feng started foolishly dancing. He did not know what was going on, all he knew was that he wouldn’t be left to his own devices and die an untimely death. Maybe he could even live long enough in this world to become a powerhouse.
After calming down, Wang Feng decided to head back out. It was night right now, so it would be better to go back inside first.
Exiting the space, Wang Feng steadily stood up and slowly walked over to the hut. Going around to the front, he entered and saw two new members to the hut- both cultivating. These were his roommates, he did not know their names and they did not know his.
Deciding not to disturb them, Wang Feng unfolded his futon and laid down. Immediately, he entered the special space. He was eager to test out what it was capable of.
Reminded of the previous experience, Wang Feng touched a bunch of the lights, and found that they would all circle through his meridians. He could feel and see his meridians expanding, miniscule amount by miniscule amount. This excited him tremendously.
He wondered what else he could do with this space.
‘What about time? Is it faster than outside?’ Deciding to test it out, Wang Feng exited the world and lifted up his sheet. He pushed it into the air, and lowered his hands quickly, before re-entering the special space.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” Once he reached ten, Wang Feng exited the space and watched as the sheet fell down. After a few more tries, based on what he saw, the space did indeed speed up time. However, it was by a ratio of approximately 1:5. While he couldn’t be exact, Wang Feng was sure that it was around that much. This meant he had more time than anyone to cultivate.
‘Actually, does my cultivation carry over from there?’ Looking inside his body, Wang Feng saw that his meridians were indeed bigger than when he first looked at them. The same size as when he cultivated just now.
However, ‘What’s that?’, Wang Feng found that there was something else- something new- inside his body. Hovering in what he assumed to be his center was a pyramid shaped object, with a color darker than any he’d seen before.
‘Is it darker than that musou black thing?’ wondered Wang Feng. He also found that some meridians were attached to it. He wondered if that would mess with his cultivation, but didn’t worry too much. It was clearly an artifact that had much more power than him.
‘Is this where that space came from? Probably. So my cheat is some kind of artifact, huh? Is it a storage space? What else can it do? Though just the time acceleration is a whole lot better.’
Wang Feng slowly went over the possibilities; cultivating Qi, time-distortion, storage space(?), more time for martial arts…etc.
Wang Feng, as he slowly pondered on his new cheat’s abilities, was reminded of the fact that he was not a thinker. He wasn’t really all that smart, and seemed a little idiotic at times. Wang Feng left it up to chance. If he could think of any uses for his cheat, then he would. No point worrying.
