[Chapter 2]

“Alright, so fishing poles?” Otto stood by the kitchen counter of the family’s little home. Cilla had done a good job keeping the home modestly clean since the passing of their mother. Otto’s sister was more interested in books and someday traveling but had stepped up the last two years since their mother had gotten sick. Once she actually passed, Cilla seemed shocked Magnus expected her to continue the task of household chores but did as she was told. Otto made sure to take part in cleaning up after himself. He never realized how much he truly participated in tracking dirt around the house until mother became bed ridden. Cilla ensures he knows when he’s made a mess if he gets absent minded of his actions.  Otto laughs to himself, maybe she would be good for Anders. Too bad Anders would be bad for her.

“No, not that.” Anders said, nervously. Knowing the items, they needed would come from Otto’s home but convincing him of collecting those items would be a task in of itself. And well Anders really didn’t like working for things.

“I thought maybe we could grab some swords, maybe your bow and arrow. A horse or two…” He began. “A horse or two? What is it exactly you are attempting to sway me into?” Otto was annoyed at this point. Anders was never straight forward with his plans, the manipulation bothered Otto greatly, but he always seemed to go along with it.

“I don’t know. I was thinking we could venture into Gold River forest to the west. Maybe bring your fishing pole too. You know in case we see the Salmon; they should be migrating out there by now. With all this rain at least.” Anders had picked up an apple from the wooden table in the center of the kitchen. Years of dents and scratches created by family dinners looked up at him from the surface. Anders never got into diners or really talking with his family. They just weren’t like that. Otto met his parents once when they were little. Mostly because Anders father was pissed, he had broken something and came out to whip the boy. Many nights Anders stayed in the modest cottage with Otto’s family. Showing up at the oddest times. Soon it became natural to their relationship. Anders was just there, whenever he felt like it. 

 

Otto knew there was no point in continuing the discussion and started to collect the items Anders had requested around the house. Looking at their extensive weapon collection, all forged by the family, Otto decided on his bronze hilt sword with the leather wrapped grip. It was his first correctly balance sword he had forged by himself as his father’s apprentice. He always preferred it above the others, loving the way it gripped in his hand. He could hear Anders rummaging through the kitchen cellar, always looking for a snack. Otto picked up his bow and a quiver of arrows adding two cutlasses to his hip and slipped a dagger into his boot. Walking into his bedroom he wrapped himself in his warmest fur coat. Although the rain was only a mist, and it would be warmer by mid-day he had a feeling Ander was going to get him in some kind of predicament and hated being cold.

 

Walking out to the stable Otto found Anders attaching a satchel of food to the horse’s saddle.  The fishing poles resting against the hitching post. Anders had already decided on two out of the three family horses. Knowing not to take Alf, Magnus’ preferred horse. The old thing would probably get to the edge of the tree line and give up anyways. Otto finished grabbing a few things and mounted Atlas. He had hurried a bit knowing he’d prefer the chestnut beauty over their painted horse, Arrow. Atlas was calmer and gave a smooth ride. Anders always seemed to forget which horse was more comfortable until he saw Otto walk quickly towards them. Letting out a big sigh Anders mounted Arrow. He knew convincing Otto to go with him was already strained, pushing the usage of which horse would probably not help.
