Chapter 56: Chapter 55: R2 – Otsuki Kouneko

After Kevin and Nathan left. Daichi got together with his subordinates and they went to a secluded area off the school grounds do discuss what happened. They usually hung out at the arcades, but today they stood in the alleyway behind the arcade building. The sudden change in attitude from Daichi towards Kevin and Nathan was something his followers were unhappy about.

The reason so many of them followed Daichi was because of his father and his sister. There was an expectation that if they hid behind someone stronger than them then they wouldn’t have to worry about being bullied or pushed around. They were the typical young masters looking for a shelter and Daichi was supposed to be the shelter for their grade.

Daichi’s older sister had loyal subordinates who told them since they were in the same class that they should make a good relationship with her younger brother. Perhaps it was a thinly veiled threat or a genuine interest in taking them under her wing, they couldn’t know but they didn’t expect to be embarrassed on their very first day.

Getting into a prestigious high school was something most would work towards through middle school with good grades, but most of them had entered by legacy from their parents. They had successful parents behind them, and money was usually tied with good connections  to the underworld for protection. 

Daichi’s actions only made him seem unreliable. They understood the need to establish dominance by bullying but not the difficulty when there was pushback.

The boy who had returned the money to Nathan didn’t need the money. What he needed was the respect and fear of being able to assert himself over someone else. His father did the same by crushing his opponents. They secretly texted each other and decided to tell Daichi goodbye and left without saying anything else. Some of them called their parents to ask to transfer schools since they didn’t want to be in the same school where it would be awkward with a loser.

Daichi stood in the alleyway by himself when they turned their backs on him. He smiled a bit feeling a little relieved and a little anguished over all of it.

Daichi: “Losers, all of them. Leaving just because things were getting tough.”

Daichi went home to a large apartment in central Tokyo by taking the train. The apartment was left for him and his sister while his father was out on ‘business’ trips for most of the year. The more Daichi thought about it, the more he believed it was funny how he was trying to play delinquent when someone he believed to be an awakened fighter scared the crap out of him. 

Soon Daichi reached home where he met his sister, Otsuki Kouneko. When she saw her younger brother there was already a glinting anger in her eyes. Standing up she marched right towards him with visible veins popping from her forehead. Sensing danger Daichi stumbled backwards scared.

Kouneko: “I heard you backed down from a fight at school. The first day at school and you’re already a coward. All the sons of businessmen I placed next to you also gave up following you and I’ve heard most want to transfer schools. Who was the person that made you afraid? Was he an awakened to cause you to run away like that? You’ve disappointed me when you’re supposed to be a man!”

Kouneko wasn’t as tall as Daichi but she was far more intimidating. As an awakened fighter of seventeen she had a permanent stern glare on her face as she had her own subordinates that followed her around with unending loyalty. 

Daichi: “You don’t understand anything at all! You don’t know this person. He knew the vital points martial arts. He can kill me easily! If you think he’s weak why don’t you go see him for yourself?”

Kouneko: “A son of a yakuza who fears death. You’re pathetic!”

Daichi: “Then you go see him tomorrow! I never wanted to make connections with those spoiled rich brats who just want to assert their dominance over everyone.  I’m not willing to die for something stupid like that! What’s the point to being yakuza if I can be killed—“

Kouneko darted forward with inhuman speed and grabbed Daichi by the collar and pinned him up against the wall with one arm lifting him off the ground easily. Daichi couldn’t move and the intense glare that he saw from his older sister stopped him from continued struggling. His dangling feet made him feel even more powerless as he grabbed her smaller wrist. Kouneko’s then walked away from the wall with him still being lifted off the ground.

Kouneko: “Even if those rich brats are annoying and want you to assert dominance, you still need keep them. You either control them by showing them a better way or you keep them in line by example. Bullying? You wanted to bully someone to give them that feeling of dominance? Just how stupid are you my little brother? Bullying the weak? I heard you picked on the smallest boy in your class! How is that respectable in any way? Yakuza do not bully the weak unless they first borrow money from us! Do you even know honor? Do you think we are a European gang that doesn’t care about existing within a society?”

A sudden fear crept onto Daichi’s face. He shook his head no. His father was a scary man and an awakened fighter. He was unlucky in that he didn’t get the bloodline for it. Kouneko would become the leader of the clan in the future because of her talent but he needed to study and help manage the business side of the underworld clan.  Daichi never felt he was born to be a leader.

Daichi: “Please… onee-san… I’m scared… I’m scared…”

Daichi’s feet were trembling as Kouneko put him down. The anger had passed and she sighed at how her brother acted. Still, she knew that Daichi was a strong lad who won martial arts competitions growing up so being afraid of someone must mean that the person is highly skilled. 

Kouneko: “Tomorrow then, tomorrow I’ll pay this Rachi Katashi a visit. Since you can’t handle your assignment to lead the group I assigned to you in a school where there are no other confirmed awakened fighters I’ll have my subordinates bring them to me instead. Grow a backbone or you’ll always be a coward, and if you have subordinates in the future don’t bully the weak like the typical young master.”

Kouneko’s voice was cold and unfeeling, but she also felt the plight of her younger brother despite not showing weakness. She took out her phone and called some of her subordinates and told them to find those whom Daichi lost. Yakuza had to establish connection with local businesses and collect protection money and her father always taught her to honor a deal. If a business paid protection then you protected them in that honor. Without trust the businesses would just flock to whomever they feared most. 

The Otsuki Clan also had a prostitution ring as well but it was kept in the dark from Tokyo Police, however the prostitutes under them were protected by paying them a percentage of earnings. Women typically wouldn’t go into prostitution unless they were desperate for money. Every once in a while there would be the sex crazed woman who enjoyed it but most were going through financially difficult times and knew no other way. For this the Otsuki clan protected those women.

Kouneko: “Either way I’m interested in this Rachi Katashi.”

Daichi: “He goes by Kevin.”

Kouneko pushed her brother causing him to stumble across the room where he fell into a chair sitting down.

Kouneko: “Quiet little brother. I’m contemplating, and I think this man might be a good recruit to have if he likes to protect others. Perhaps you succeeded by failing. If he knows the vital points martial arts then he could also be dangerous to me… that is if he is fast enough with his reflexes to even keep up with my movement.”

Kouneko chuckled and went to her room to do some planning.

Daichi was relieved when his sister went off. He took several breaths and thought about how he asked to become Kevin’s subordinate. There was something about Kevin that made him believe he would be able to do much more if he could avoid being under his sister within his family. Daichi didn’t know what else to do since he wanted to leave the protection business, but due to his association with his father if one of his father’s enemies came he would still need to defend himself especially if an awakened fighter came.

Thinking about it again, he really wanted to learn about the awakened martial arts. It was something he felt to be essential. The whole ordeal with Robin also made him uncomfortable since the reason he was hitting on her was to show off to his subordinates. In reality, he preferred girls with black hair even though he had to admit Robin was very beautiful. She was more like a doll for him than someone he saw as a partner.

Besides… western women aged poorly. When he turned forty and she was the same age she’d look like his mother rather than his wife. Daichi didn’t like that.

In the other room Kouneko was talking with her subordinates on a phone conference. She wanted to fix the situation that Daichi created on the first day of school.

Kouneko: “Make sure those we marked to be Diachi’s subordinates are in line tomorrow. I’m going to make sure everything goes according to plan.”
