I wanted to talk with several classmates in between the periods about Otsuki Daichi. I wanted to know who or what I was dealing with. I felt there was something wrong with him for being so brazen in class. I couldn’t remember the names of the classmates near me, but I felt the majority of them were friendly.
I started with the one sitting next to me.
Kevin: “Hi there.”
Classmate 1: “Konichiwa Rachi-san! It is a pleasure to meet you. I’m—”
Kevin: “Do you know much about Otsuki Daichi?”
The classmate stared at me for a moment in disbelief at the question. I’m new to Tokyo so I wouldn’t know the students who grew up here. It was obvious I don’t know up or down in their social life, but to be stared at like that made me feel uncomfortable.
Kevin: “Is there something wrong with me asking about Otsuki-san?”
Classmate 1: “Stay away from him Rachi-san. Even if he isn’t much by himself he has an older sister in year two that attends this school. She is dangerous.”
That was all I got from the classmate sitting next to me. When I looked to the other classmates, they were mostly quiet. No one wanted to talk about Daichi’s sister. The subject was obvious taboo to them. I wasn’t sure what to make of it, but the fear made me suspect she might be an awakened fighter.
Kevin: “Robin, I have a question for you.”
Robin: “Sure, ask me anything you want love.”
Kevin: “The awakened fighter we both sensed in the school, are you stronger than her?”
Robin: “I am. You think she’s connected to the bullying?”
Kevin: “We didn’t get her name but I think she is Otsuki Daichi’s older sister. She might interfere with us so I wanted to make sure we weren’t doing anything too dangerous without a plan.”
Robin: “I see. I should be able to beat her. There aren’t many awakened fighters around. There are some adults in Tokyo who have that strength but I don’t think the adult fighters will interfere with a kids quarrel.”
Kevin: “I see. That’s good then. We’ll just meet with Nathan after school.”
Nathan sat at his desk while Daichi was on the other side of the room seeming gleeful to him. The last period of the day was ending and there would be time to join school activities and clubs. Nathan didn’t want to join them. He was nervous because Robin had called him to the front of the school. He sent Kevin a text saying he’ll go home alone, but Kevin sent a text back telling him no. They’re going to meet him in the front and if he isn’t there they’ll go looking for him.
Nathan felt at a loss as he didn’t want to expose his aniki to his problems on the very first day. The texts stopped and the last period ended with Daichi coming over and placing his muscular arm around Nathan. There was a mocking grin on his face as he looked over the smaller boy.
The presence Daichi’s subordinates caused Nathan’s stomach to churn as he realized he was too small and weak to change the situation around. Thinking about Kevin who was only slightly taller than him, he didn’t think there was any chance he could fight against Daichi who seemed to have trained since young. Both he and Kevin were considered smaller than average, and Daichi was much bigger and stronger than the average. If Robin refused to be with Daichi then maybe she would also be treated badly in school.
Nathan already felt defeated over the ordeal. He felt defeated and powerless because he heard rumors of Daichi’s background being one that had multiple connections with the Yakuza. There was no way out once targeted. Daichi’s grin only made him slink back in fear and dejection and Daichi’s mockingly tense voice was something he couldn’t respond too easily… but he cared for his aniki more than himself.
Daichi: “Now, lets go see your aniki and his girlfriend!”
Nathan: “Otsuki-san, please don’t hurt them. You already took my money—“
Daichi: “I want that foreign girl too. Your aniki is going to break up with her and she is going to be mine or there will be consequences.”
Nathan didn’t know what else to do. He became afraid of the consequences and afraid his brother will hate him after he leads Daichi to him. He wanted to tell Kevin to run but no matter what scenario he thought about, all of it lead to Kevin meeting them after school. Nathan didn’t know what else to do… if he texted Kevin to run because he was being bullied it was probably that Kevin would come and fight and get beaten up anyway.
Nathan: “Otsuki-san…. That girl… she already became my aniki’s woman. They… already did that.”
Silence between Daichi, his subordinates and Nathan for a moment. The information was being processed into Daichi’s brain and Daichi didn’t to know what to think. There were many thoughts now blowing through his mind, but then after a few moments Daichi hit Nathan over the head. The slap from his hand to the back of Nathan’s head caused Nathan to stumble forward and bending over with both hands clutching where he was hit.
Daichi: “How dare you slander such a beautiful woman! You think she would just give it up to someone who is probably as ugly as your brother? You’re lying! It’s okay to be afraid of me but it’s not okay to lie.”
Nathan wasn’t lying. Robin and Kevin really did do it but Nathan wasn’t sure how to say that loudly because the reputation of Robin would be terrible if others believed it. Nathan didn’t know what to do as Daichi used his hand to grab Nathan’s shoulder in a pincer grip that made him gasp in pain. Nathan stood up as Daichi forced him to walk towards the school gates.
The teacher was also in the room as this happened but they quickly made their way out. Nathan who wanted to call for help realized even the teachers were afraid of Daichi.
Daichi: “Robin-chan said to meet them at the front of the school. Now we are going to meet them and I’m going to show Robin-chan what a weak little man your brother is!”
Nathan was dragged off as Daichi’s entourage walked with him out of the classroom. Every step was torture for Nathan. Kevin was his best friend since childhood, and had always been there with him whenever he needed help with school or advice about something. Even with the reveal that he might not actually be his blood brother Nathan didn’t care. Kevin was family and he never wanted to betray family. Kevin would always be someone he called his brother.
Siblings in Japan were considered sacred, even more so than parents. That sacred relationship ingrained in the culture made Nathan’s heart painful as he felt powerless going down the stairs and into the front of the school gates. In his sights, Nathan saw both Kevin and Robin standing there holding hands. The stinging now entered Nathan’s heart as the two he considered the most important to him might now be bullied.
I watched as Nathan came out being grabbed on the shoulder by Otsuki Daichi. Robin was also glaring at them. We were thinking about how they had nothing better to do than to try and pick on someone smaller and weaker. The so called bullies by Daichi’s side were all sons of businessmen and politicians. That was the scoop I got in between periods from anyone who was willing to tell me to steer clear of Daichi. There was a saying in the world that the strong preyed on the weak. The reality is that it only works that way because the weak don’t fight back. The sons of those businessmen were big but mentally they were weak and afraid of Daichi and his family.
If the weak did everything they could in resistance all the way until death, then the strong would have little to gain through the use of force. With less to gain there would be less desire to approach everything with force. The majority of weak people however, don’t think this way and because of that there are too many who suffer and die doing nothing but giving the so-called strong what they desire. This leads to the constant abuse of power.
Nathan being tormented by those who were born with a physical advantage over him made me angry. His parents were quiet people who took care of me without question. Sure they didn’t love me like their own son but they were diligent and fair with providing me the necessary resources for survival even after the group watching me left.
When all things were considered however, life wasn’t fair and I was going to make it even more unfair for the bullies. I’m angry.
I stepped forward as Robin tapped me on the shoulder. I didn’t turn around because I was going to ‘take care’ of this situation without her help. Normal people shouldn’t be able to fight with me, but I wanted to make sure to cover my bases incase she really had something else to say.
Kevin: “Robin?”
Robin: “Good luck. I just wanted to give you a tap since I can tell you’re angry.”
Kevin: “Thanks. I’m going to mess him up and we’re going to take Nathan home.”
I stepped forward to confront Otsuki Daichi as he had that smug sardonic grin on his face. There was some bruising on Nathan’s arms. I looked out for teachers but almost all of them seemed to be deliberately avoiding the front of the school where Otsuki was having a showdown with me. I’m guessing that he must have some pull within the school in order to do that… or the teachers are just like most other Japanese herbivores who mind their own business and cower in fear.
I could only shake my head at it since I didn’t know the full background of every individual teacher, but I was still unhappy that the so-called adults were nowhere to be found when we needed them the most. After this, I’m going to try and do some more research on the Otsuki family and try to meet his older sister. Robin might be able to do that for me.
Kevin: “I take it you’re Otsuki Daichi and you’re planning on bullying my brother this year.”

Daichi: “Bullying? We’re not bullying him. We are friends and he told me he had a nice aniki and so I wanted to meet that aniki of his. Right Takashi-Kun?”
His grip on Nathan’s shoulder tightened and Nathan was in pain at those words. What a bastard! I was tired of this and just walked in quick steps. He’s already hit Nathan and the worse he was going to do was hit him again.
The other students walked quietly on by pretending to not notice what was happening. It’s obvious the majority of them didn’t want to get involved. It seemed Japan was a society of people who would prefer to stay away from violence and other problems. Well, their culture is often full of social compliance so what was there to say? There were very few who were willing to fight or make someone else’s problem their own. Even in the face of injustice.
I couldn’t blame them. The rumor was that Otsuki Daichi had yakuza in his family. No one wants to get involved with people who could bring more problems to them outside of school. If this were my first life, even if I hate to admit to it I would do the same. Now is different however because I’ve lived more than one life. Perspectives change as more experience is granted.
Daichi: “You’re not afraid? Come then!”
Kevin: “Why would you think I was afraid of you? Why would anyone be afraid of you?”
I took more steps forward.
Daichi: “Only fools are not afraid of me. I’m the strongest of the first years, I’ve won championships in martial arts. You won’t be able to beat me, you won’t even be able to beat those around me and you’re coming up by yourself. I should punish your brother.”
He was going to hurt Nathan again so I rushed forward and used my hand to poke at his grip before he could make that move. There was a nerve ending exposed that I dug my index and middle finger into that caused his grip to loosen. I then quickly grabbed Nathan and pulled him behind me. The others on Daichi’s side moved towards me but I hit their fingers using my superior senses and reflexes to stun their nerves.
Bully 1: “Ouch! You scratched me!”
Bully 2: “He has a weapon?”
The two who reacted slinked back stumbling after my precision attack.
Daichi was clearly in pain but prevented himself from showing it on his face as he grabbed his hand. His fingers opened and closed the fist a few times as he tried to make sure everything was working. Hitting the nerve endings usually cause numbness with no permanent damage. The important thing now was that Nathan wasn’t in their hands.
Bully 1: “Be a man! Don’t fight with weapons!”
Kevin: “Be a man, fight me one on one… or is Daichi so scared to fight me by himself?”
Those words came out because Daichi was still holding the hand that grabbed Nathan. He seemed to have something else on his mind after I poked him. The lackeys of his didn’t seem to know the same things as he did.
Daichi: “Both of you get back. No one should do anything right now. Let me talk to him instead.”
Daichi walked forward in front of the others trying to look as intimidating as possible. It was clear he knew a thing or two about how to control a scene and make sure the situation doesn’t get too far out of hand. The other bullies behind him obeyed him and gave him full authority.
Daichi however, was still just a human.
Daichi: “You… what was your name?”
Kevin: “Rachi Katashi, but I prefer to be called Kevin.”
Daichi seemed to acknowledge it. He didn’t seem that angry either. Instead of going to fight he bowed towards me.
Daichi: “Please forgive me for my insolence. I didn’t know you were a martial arts master.”
Kevin: “Wait… where is this coming from?”
Daichi: “You hit the vital point in my hand and then stopped the others from coming up to you by hitting their vital points as well. You didn’t have a weapon on you that I could see, and the numbness you caused is similar to those who know the vital points.”
Kevin: “You’re so willing to apologize now just because I’m stronger than you?”
Daichi: “Yes. The strong can do whatever they want to the weak. That is law.”
How cliche.
Kevin: “So you’re saying you’ll be my subordinate?”
Daichi: “Yes. If you wish to be my aniki then I will follow you.”
You just went from bullying my brother Nathan to wanting to become my subordinate. Is the real life? This can’t be real life!
Kevin: “Get my brother to forgive you first then I’ll think about it. For now I’m still angry that you hurt him and stole his money.”
Daichi turned to the boy beside him and the large boy took out the money and walked forward with it to return it. The boy then bowed to Nathan in a sorry motion. I honestly don’t even know how to react.
Kevin: “I thought you were going to attack me and accuse me of having a weapon? Are you really so willing to stop just because Daichi told you?”
Bully 1: “Yes.”
The boy then went back to Daichi’s side.
Kevin: “I’m going home then.”
Daichi: “Sayonara!”
I didn’t pay him any attention. I didn’t want more trouble to start.
