It was deep into the night, a chill wind blew through the streets of the slums. Shouts could be heard in the distance as people tried to put out the fire started at Boss G’s residence.
Inside Henri’s hut, there was the stench of decay. It had been almost 2 days since his death, the body started to decompose and release a foul odor.
Alfred decided to make this his temporary home. He dragged the body outside making sure nobody was watching, then used Scorch to set the body alight. He made sure to control the fire so it didn’t spread.
Feeling exhausted, he walked inside and collapsed over the small bed. There was a lot that happened since his transmigration, ‘I can finally get some well-deserved rest’ he thought while dozing off into deep sleep.
For 12 hours, Alfred slept like a log and awoke to the afternoon sun shining through the thatched roof.
‘Menu, Skillshop,’ he called out internally while putting on his worn-out garments and some of Henri’s leftover clothes.

The highest grade skill that was accessible from the store was Grade D, however, there were as many as 100 Skills available for purchase.
‘Impressive. However, I’m not sure how easy it is to obtain Skill Points yet, only time will tell.’ he mused.
His stomach grumbled and Alfred decided to search through Boss G’s memories to see if he could find some useful information. The food problem needed to be solved urgently.
The last year of Boss G’s life flashed before him as he digested all the memories.
Through the memories, it became evident that Guillaume’s father had no love for him. Numerous scenes of him being berated by Declan filled Alfred’s mind. The most recent memory was during the last day of Boss G’s life
…
It was a bright morning and Guillaume was feeling excited, today was the awaited day. Rarely would he have an audience with his father, usually Declan would send the Deathmen. This was an opportunity to show off his new accomplishments since he desperately sought his father’s approval.
Boss G finally learned the elementary spell Scorch, the Hocus family specialized in fire magic so it meant a lot to him. His father gifted him the spell 15 years ago when he became an E-class mage, however, he was only able to learn it a couple of months ago.
Guillaume put on his best dress to impress his father and headed out early to the meeting place.
…
In a shady inn, near the outskirts of the inner city, there was a man seated at a table with a frown. He was surrounded by men in black, some of them appeared youthful but most were older.
The men were a covert team that worked in the shadows for Declan. They followed all his orders without question as they were trained from the age of 5. The family raised them to be the High Elder’s private force. They were known as the Deathmen.
Guillaume entered through the door and locked eyes with the man.
“High Elder,” he called out timidly.
“You dare come late to our meeting!” The elder shouted.
The cloaked men all brandished their weapons ready to strike.
“No! I’m sorry!” Guillaume stammered as he gave a deep bow and shut his eyes, awaiting the worst. It was before the actual meeting time, however, he wouldn’t dare argue back.
“I wouldn’t honor you with my presence today if not for the importance of the mission. I want you to listen carefully…” Declan began.
“Leave us,” he gestured to the Deathmen, and they all scattered into the shadows before he continued.
“There’s a shipment arriving in 3 days that I need you to attend to, I will provide you with the personnel for protection. The Deathmen will be hidden from sight but they will be with you throughout the whole exchange. Your only job is to be the bait. If the sellers renege, I want you to activate this talisman and wait for the reinforcements.” The elder spoke in a heavy tone, throwing the talisman at the youth.
“Yes, Father,” Guillaume responded while catching the talisman. He began to open his mouth, thinking of the correct words to start his monologue.
While putting up a sound barrier, his father bellowed;
“Don’t call me that you filthy scum! I would rid myself of your embarrassment if not for your late mother. You dare say that word again and I will lop your head off before you finish the sentence.”

Declan was furious, ‘how could this Idiot be my seed’ he thought to himself. If anyone heard him, it could reveal the whole charade and embarrass him further.
“Sorry High Elder!” Guillaume fell back into a deep bow.
The youth was embarrassed. He had this vision in his head where he would reveal his new achievement and get showered with love and affection. Now that events had transpired, he was too heartbroken to reveal anything.
“I.. I..” the words got stuck in his throat, it felt as if an apple was lodged in his airway.
“Get out! Know that if you fail this simple task I Will end you myself. And consider your mother’s debt repaid in full, you’re an embarrassment to the both of us.” Declan stated heartlessly as he stood up.
A magic circle formed below his feet and expanded to 1 meter in diameter. After a green light illuminated his figure, the man disappeared as if he was never there in the first place.
Silence.
Guillaume looked at his feet heart-stricken as tears welled up in his eyes.
…
Looking back at the memories, Alfred almost felt sorry for the boss. He was a child in a man’s body, still yearning for his parent’s affection. Alfred had outgrown those feelings by the time he was 7.
The useful parts of Boss G’s memories included how to cast the two spells; Scorch and Illusio. It also included information about the black market. The people in the slums were poor, yet on the black market, you could find wares that exceeded 100 gold coins.
100 copper coins were equal to 1 silver coin, 100 silver coins were equal to 1 gold coin, and 100 gold coins were equal to 1 platinum coin.
The Slums were not regulated which resulted in a booming economy forming. The crown collected tax from the inner city businesses and families, however, the slums were too chaotic to be managed. All the cities in Sven were controlled by the Royal Family. Their headquarters were in Arkyl, the central city of Sven.
The true purpose of the slums was to protect the inner city from large-scale monster waves. There was a large magic circle placed beneath the slums, once activated it would sacrifice all living beings in the vicinity and erect a large shield over the inner city.
It was the last line of defense only to be used after the outer wall fell, and a secret only known to the inner-city Nobles. This was also the reason the slums were tolerated and not eradicated.
Monster waves were frequent and happened once every couple of years, however, a large-scale monster wave was rare.
Alfred learned all this from Boss G’s memories which left him surprised. He also learned where all the black market branches were located and where Guillaume left his secret stash. Once there, he would find some silver and the talisman handed by the Elder.
Alfred decided to head out to the stash so that he could buy some food and clothes. Leaving the sword at the hut, he concealed the knife in his pants before leaving.
…
The days were warm and the nights were cold in Seinfeld. Alfred made his way through the streets and felt the kiss of the sun on his skin. In his old world, the weather was always dreary so it was a nice change of pace.
He strode through the streets in confidence and made his way to Boss G’s stash, It was hidden under a floorboard in a whore house. The stash was in Boss G’s favorite room, on days he wasn’t there it was open to the public. Alfred was hoping it would still be there.
He arrived at the whore house and entered through the front door. To his surprise, nobody stopped him from entering. It was during the day so there were not many customers about.
The whore house reeked of sweat and smoke. As he walked in he heard the hushed laughter of women and men, soft music was playing in the background.
The main hall had some wooden tables and chairs since it doubled as a bar and restaurant. The customers could enjoy drinking before taking their pick of women and heading to the private rooms upstairs.
As soon as Alfred made it to the staircase, a bodacious woman approached him from the left.
“Ello there kid, looking for mommy?” she wrongly assumed the boy was a child of a whore. She smiled and revealed her rotting yellow teeth.
Alfred gulped holding back vomit, he could taste stomach acid at the back of his throat.
Putting on a wide smile, he responded, “It’s alright, I know where she is.”
“Do you need me to help you find her?” she asked persistently.
“Ermm no, I’ve been here before.” Alfred ignored her and quickly went up the stairs.
The woman watched his back as she contemplated to herself, the kid looked familiar but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him.
Alfred arrived in front of the private room he was looking for, the door was left ajar. He stepped inside only to see an oversized woman smothering a man with her large breasts.
The man was muffling some words as the woman giggled loudly, Alfred paid no mind and swiftly went to the floorboard with the stash. As he lifted the piece of wood and removed the pouch, the woman noticed him.
“Oi!” she yelled out, “put that back, you thief!” She didn’t know what was in the pouch or who it belonged to, but she wanted to claim it as hers. The boy was suspicious but she was still willing to gamble.
Alfred rolled his eyes and walked towards the door, he was in no mood to entertain the pair. Unfortunately for him, this only provoked them further. The woman was now certain the kid had something of value.
“Hey kid, don’t you know it’s wrong to steal from women? Especially one as beautiful as Amy.” The man flattered while also trying to intimidate the boy.
‘Beautiful? I thought it was a buffalo before it spoke.’ Alfred almost laughed out loud, he gave one look back before exiting the room without a word.
The man and woman quickly got dressed and ran after the boy, they were not willing to give up a free meal so easily.
