Ratlid was a short, stout man with big bulky arms. His hair was short and he had a stubby beard that had missing patches. A long scar went from his left eye to the back of his neck.

Everyone knew him in the market, especially in the food courts. Although his IQ was very lacking, nobody doubted his strength. He was the guard here in the food court and dealt with the petty thieves.

“HEY! You f***er! Get back here! RATLID AFTER HIM, HE’S GETTING AWAY.” The clerk shouted.

Any victim of Ratlid’s had a very low chance of survival. He liked to torture all his victims by crushing their bones with large stones. Today, his target was Alfred.

*Swish swish*

Alfred dashed between the people in the crowd, trying to make as much distance as possible before Ratlid could even start to move.

Alfred’s agility and speed were a bit higher than an adult male’s; an adult male would have around 4 attribute points, whereas he had 5. However, that was only true for normal people with no training or magic.

He dashed past a couple holding hands and slid in-between a tall man's legs, as soon as he stood up, he turned right and sprinted into an alleyway.

Ratlid was on the move, he wasn’t as agile as Alfred but he was just as fast in a straight line. Instead of maneuvering through the crowd, he just barged his way through violently.

“Out of the way, peasants!” He growled as he moved towards the alleyway.

Alfred was at the end of the alleyway by the time Ratlid got to the entrance, he squeezed himself between two huts before climbing on top of another to look for an escape route.

Ratlid could see all this, he charged like a rhino and ran straight through the wall of the first hut Alfred squeezed passed. He then went around the hut Alfred climbed and followed him into another alleyway.

Alfred zig-zagged across the path as Ratlid was throwing rocks at him, he ducked as one went past his head.

‘S*** that was a close call! I need to lose this oaf as soon as possible.’

Alfred had the boy’s memories so he knew these alleyways like the back of his hand, he led Ratlid as he went from alleyway to alleyway. He had a location in mind.

‘This better work.’ Alfred was at his wit's end. ‘Just one more path.’

He was desperate as he was running on an empty stomach, he hadn’t eaten in days. The blood seemed to only replenish his Shakti levels but did nothing for his stamina.

Just as Alfred was about to turn the corner into the alleyway he set out towards, Ratlid screamed out; “Accelerate!”

*whoosh”

A fist-sized rock flew towards Alfred and hit him behind the left thigh.

“Argh!”

‘He knows magic? How? He's just a buffoon!’ Alfred thought in anguish.

Little did he know that the whole reason Ratlid was famous, was his knowledge of that one magic spell.

Anyone who was even slightly proficient in magic would laugh at his application, it was an elementary spell taught to kids to help them grasp the feeling of Mana.

However, this ability, especially in the slums, made him a god.

Alfred tumbled into the Alleyway as he made the turn.

‘At least I made it, let's see how this goes.’ Alfred had a smirk on his face.

“You idiot! Hahahahaha" Ratlid laughed out loud. “You walked into a dead-end, now I get to crush you!” He licked his lips.

Alfred limped towards the back wall of the alleyway and rested his back against it, he let out a large sigh as sweat dripped down his forehead. He looked into the eyes of Ratlid and just smiled, it was a wide grin that sent shivers down Ratlid's back.

‘This guy doesn’t seem like an average kid, I better end this quick.’ Ratlid thought as he pulled out a large pocket knife and flicked it open.

*Flick*

*Growl growl growl*

‘Huh? What on earth...’ Ratlid was confused as he turned back to the sound of growling. It was Alfred's pack. Dogs were loyal creatures even in this world, even more so considering they went through a lot together and formed a bond.

This was their territory.

Before Ratlid could even turn around completely, 3 skinny dogs dashed towards him. He managed to backhand 2 of the dogs at the same time with his left hand. However, the third dog managed to bite him on his right wrist.

“Argh!” Ratlid screamed and dropped the knife to the ground.

‘Well done my beauties, now it's my turn.’ Alfred squatted down and got into the sprint position. He used to run track in high school so he was very familiar with it.

The whole time he was on the run, he could feel a strange power within him begging to be used, however, he saved it up for this moment. Alfred was always calculative and he feared he would be drained after its use; he couldn’t take the risk unless he was certain.

His injury was still throbbing but he noticed the pain was subsiding, ‘this must be my passive healing in effect.’ Alfred thought to himself.

He pushed off the ground with all his force and he noticed a notification pop up as he took his first step.

[Vampiric Mode Enabled: All Stats X 2

Mana: NULL

Shakti: 10SP

Speed: 10

Defense: 10

Alfred’s eyes turned red, and he now had two sharp fangs. His hair also grew by 5 inches.

All his stats doubled except his Shakti. He felt an immense power within his muscles and veins like he was a small lightweight vehicle with a super core engine.

Ratlid was around 12 meters away, he wasn't expecting Alfred to close in so quickly. Alfred managed to run 10 meters in half a second.

As soon as He noticed Alfred in his face, Ratlid put his arms up in a cross position to guard. However, when he looked in front of himself, he could no longer see Alfred.

Ratlid felt a sense of foreboding and turned around instantly; it was too late. As he made eye contact with Alfred, there was a large pocket knife lodged in his throat.

Alfred twisted the knife, then pulled back with force. This wasn’t his first time doing this, he knew exactly how to do the most damage.

“Bleurgh!”

*Fwish fwish fwish*

Blood spurted out of Ratlid’s neck as he fell to his knees. He tried to grab the wound with both hands but blood continued to spill.

*Gurgle gurgle*

He fell face forward with wide eyes, completely aghast.

[Vampire Mode Disabled.

Shakti: 6SP]

[Rank F Blood Detected.

Would The User Like To Drain The Victim?

Yes/No]

 ‘Yes.’ Alfred thought without hesitation.

*Fwoosh*

5.5 liters of blood went straight into his mouth. He felt a sweet taste in his mouth and his face lit up in bliss, it was a comforting feeling.

‘I still can't get used to that feeling, I'm disgusted that I found that so enjoyable. Urgh!’ Alfred said to himself as he winced.

[Strength + 1, Vitality + 1, XP + 10]

[Level Up, All Stats + 1]

[Downloading Blood Memories: 8%]

The percentage slowly climbed up until it reached 100%, and the last year of Ratlid’s memories flashed into his mind. After a brief discomfort, Alfred began to sort through the memories.

He noticed almost none of Ratlid’s memories were beneficial, just filled with vague feelings and desires to crush things.

All Ratlid did was eat, sleep and torture whatever small creature he could get his hands on. Alfred started to wonder if everyone in this world was deranged.

Any torture Alfred ever inflicted was done with some purpose in mind. He prided himself in that regard and didn't relate any of his actions with Ratlids.

However, he did find one piece of vital information, the spell; ‘Accelerate’, and how to cast it. Alfred decided to wait a bit before trying it out.

‘Hey AILA pull up my stats.’ Alfred called out to AILA in his mind.

[Name: Alfred

Species: Dhampir

Level: 2 (XP: 5/10)

Health: 26HP

Mana: NULL

Shakti: 15SP

Strength: 9

Agility: 6

Speed: 6

Defense: 6

Vitality: 8

Charm: 6]

‘OK, now I'm level 2. Hmm... My Charm Stat jumped straight to 5, + 1 from the level up makes 6. I need to do more experimenting before I can find out how this system works. My Charm Stat only unlocked after I outsmarted the clerk.’

Alfred remembered his conversation with the clerk, after many years in business he managed to find a way to build confidence in his associate with just his body language and tone. Although the clerk didn’t know it, his trusting attitude was due to Alfred’s demeanor.

‘Hey, AILA what benefits do I get from leveling up?’

[As you level up, you unlock more system functions and abilities for you to use.]

‘Alright, and how do I unlock Mana?’

[You must learn Mana Flow first.]

‘And what is that?’

[It's a prerequisite for controlling and casting Mana for use in spells.]

‘I’m pretty sure Mana flow is something I can already do since I know how to cast Accelerate already.’

Alfred closed his eyes and remembered how Ratlid would cast it from his memories. He breathed in and imagined Mana in the air flowing into his lungs.

The next step was to accumulate the Mana at the base of your navel, then imagine the spell you want to use.

The final step was to vocalize the spell and let the Mana flow in the body, following the spell path.

Different spells had different spell paths, and some were more complex than others. Certain spells could take more than an hour to make the Mana flow through the entire spell path.

If a single mistake was made, the spell would either backlash or not work entirely.

This was what made magic so difficult and not easily accessible to most commoners. Only people who went to magic schools or nobles were given correct instruction to master magic.

“Accelerate!”

Alfred shouted out while imagining his fist going at incredible speed. He had to first visualize the Mana going through the spell path.

The spell path was simple for Accelerate; it started from the naval and went to the heart, from there it followed the blood to the casting hand.

From the casting hand, the Mana could then be projected onto objects but he directed it towards his fist for a punch.

*Whoosh*

He succeeded.

[MANA UNLOCKED

MANA: 10MP]

‘Oh, wow that was easy, and it jumped to 10MP; exactly where my Shakti started from.’

*Rumble rumble*

Alfred's stomach was speaking tongues, he remembered why he did all this and picked up the bag with the meat buns.

‘It’s time to eat!’
