Alfred hid the bodies ineptly in the pile of rubbish, he noticed it was nearing midnight by the positioning of the moon so it would be too dark to be found. This wasn’t an alleyway that had a lot of foot traffic which worked in his favor.

Alfred decided to wait for his Mana and Shakti to replenish before taking on the big boss. He looted Lenny for his sword and belt and also took a key out of Frank’s inner pocket.

The Boss had gone to sleep, all the alcohol and women tired him out. The candles in the house were extinguished, however, some of the servants were still awake.

Alfred knew that the key in his hand opened the front door to the house, the servants would be in their quarters so he could sneak up the stairs and make his way to the master bedroom.

The house was eerie in the dead of the night, now that the party had died down it looked as if it was abandoned. It towered over the surrounding homes, its vastness only added to the illusion of vacancy.

Alfred approached the door and reached for the lock, he slowly inserted the key and twisted it quietly.

Click!

Creek...

The door opened and Alfred tiptoed into the house, there was a large hallway at the entrance with many doors to the back. It had a stairway on the left-hand side and a high ceiling that extended above the second floor. At the end of the stairway was a balcony that looked down onto the first floor, the hallway on the second floor was lined with doors that led to the sleeping quarters.

There was a large door different from the others, it led to Boss G’s bedroom where he slept. The door frame was high and had two doors that opened outwards, it was decorated with wooden ornaments in the shape of lions.

Alfred crept towards the door while keeping to the walls, he wanted to reduce the sound he made since the wooden panels on the floor creaked at weak points.

[Stealth Stat Unlocked:

Stealth: 5]

Alfred was surprised by the notification and almost jumped back, ‘why did a new Stat randomly unlock AILA?’ he asked.

[New Stats Unlock Once The User Attempts A New Skill. Your Charm Stat Unlocked When You Out-witted The Clerk Into Giving You Food Before Payment, Your Mana Stat Unlocked When You Attempted To Cast Magic, And Now You Unlocked Stealth By Infiltrating This House Successfully.]

‘OK I understand, but why do all stats start at 5?’ Alfred replied.

[After Unlocking A Stat, I’m Able To Boost You 5 levels With No Prior Requirements. However, To Increase By Any Further Levels, You Have To Assign Earned Attribute Points.]

‘And how do I earn Attribute Points?’

[By Completing Quests, Defeating Opponents, Or Overcoming Hidden Challenges.]

Alfred decided to stop his conversation with AILA, he remembered he was on a stealth mission where his life was at risk. He had a plan but didn’t know how smoothly it would play out.

With his new Stealth Stat Alfred’s movements produced less sound, as long as he moved slowly you wouldn’t be able to tell there was anyone there. Although still visible, he blended more into the environment.

Alfred came before the room and silently opened one of the doors with the utmost care, without his stealth stat this would have made an audible sound. As his vision entered the room, he noticed a large bed centered at the back wall.

The bed was 6 meters wide and had a large headboard with the head of a lion in the middle, it was low to the ground and surrounded by life-size wooden statues of forest animals prostrating to it.

The room also had double doors leading to a balcony and a small window to the side.

‘Clearly, this guy has a superiority complex.’ Alfred mused.

On the bed were four women lying on top of a naked man, he was well built but not entirely lean. The women were average looking at best, exactly what you would expect a whore in the slums to look like. They were also naked and huddled together on top of the Boss.

[New Quest: Defeat Rank E mage.

Rewards: 100XP, 5 Attribute points, New Skill Unlock]

Alfred read the notification silently in his head and acknowledged the rewards. Now that there was a greater incentive for him to defeat Boss G, he renewed his resolve to succeed.

He neared the bed silently and swiftly, he skilfully stepped past the Statues without knocking any over and arrived at its side.

Boss G was at the center of the bed with two women on either side, Alfred’s arms were not long enough to reach him. He wanted to do a silent assassination but it would not be plausible due to the size of the bed.

‘Wait a minute I forgot about the sword.’ Alfred had an epiphany.

He silently unsheathed the sword which was 1 meter long not including the handle. At the base of the blade, it was 2 inches wide and the hilt had a simple guard. It had no decorations and was wrapped in black leather for grip. The pommel was a green, round crystal hammered in place and secured by leather.

Alfred crept to the edge of the bed and raised the sword with both hands high above his head. From this angle the tip of the blade would be able to reach Boss G’s neck, however, it would also slice through one of the women.

The woman was innocent judging by normal standards but had become guilty the moment she became a hindrance. Alfred showed no mercy when it came to people in his way. If he hesitated now and decided to show weakness on her account, the missed opportunity could lead to Alfred’s defeat.

This was a life or death situation, he never underestimated any of his enemies let alone an opponent who had magic. Furthermore, the women herself could aid Boss G in battle and become a greater obstacle. Although it was unlikely, she could be a magic user too.

Alfred reaffirmed his resolve and swung the sword down with full force, he even used Accelerate to increase the speed of the blade.

Ding!

“Arghh!” There was a deathly shriek, the women had woken up to the loud clang of metal hitting metal only to find an assassin looming over them. They screamed in unison.

Alfred’s eyes opened wide and his grip loosened, his body trembled from the force as he tried to calm himself. Boss G had taken out a dagger beneath his pillow and managed to block the attack with his eyes still shut.

‘How? Where did he get the dagger from? It’s as if there were two versions of his right arm!’ Alfred began to obsess, he couldn’t fathom the turn of events that just occurred. He gritted his teeth and stepped back as he held the sword with both hands pointed at Boss G.

This was an inexcusable blunder, the opportunity had been lost. Alfred’s heart was beating so loud it became audible, the small hairs on his arms and neck were fully extended and time had seemed to stop.

There was a ghostly silence. Alfred’s eyes were glued on the boss who was still lying there with his arm extended up in the air, dagger in hand, and eyes still shut.

“Leave.” One word. Yet Boss G had managed to say it in such a way that it encapsulated many meanings. It was as though he was talking to the women and Alfred at the same time with a different meaning for each.

To Alfred it was a threat, to the women, it was an order.

The women understood and grabbed whatever they could find to cover themselves before standing up and running out the door.

Boss G opened his eyes while dropping his arm slowly and made eye contact with Alfred. The lion statue on the headboard came to life through his eyes, there was a certain majesty about his demeanor.

He sat up and Alfred flinched, taking two steps back. For the second time in his life, Alfred felt like he wasn’t in control. His heart beat quickened and his mind ran a million miles per hour as he tried to think up a scheme.

Alfred shook his head and tried to focus, he had been under pressure many times before. He wouldn’t let the fear overtake his reasoning. Alfred slowed his breathing and tightened his grip on the sword. There was no way he would die again without putting up a fight.

“A child? Really? Do my contenders think so low of me boy?” Boss G inquired towards Alfred in a low chilling voice. It was as if a king was addressing a disobedient servant.

Alfred had yet to activate Vampiric mode, he was guessing the speed of the man and if he could escape if needed.

“Cat got your tongue, my child? What happened to all the confidence you had while skulking through my abode?”

Alfred scoffed to himself, almost laughing out loud. Although this man was terrifying, he spoke as if he was a true king when he was just another slum dweller. Alfred wanted to laugh at the juxtaposition.

“Something funny?” Boss G’s face suddenly became serious and the air in the room thickened. He removed his duvet and stood up slowly, still naked. He towered over Alfred’s tiny frame, and his bare nakedness did little to remove his intimidation.

“One chance. Tell me who you work for and I’ll grant you a painless death.”

“Your mother,” Alfred replied with a large smile, he had calmed his heart and could now finally face his foe.
