‘Damn! He knows the truth! But it doesn’t matter if he can’t keep up. I’ll create distractions to lose him.’ Boss G reassured himself as he started to plan his next attack.
The air turned heavy and the mirage resurfaced, the flames began to roar and crackle as Boss G turned into his previous form.
‘I knew it! It was just an illusion.’ Alfred was happy because he could now think of a counter. It would be impossible to defeat a hidden enemy. However, now that the secret was revealed, all he had to do was locate him and finish the fight.
‘AILA, is there any way I can locate his true body?’
[You Can Use Your Sense Of Smell Since Dhampirs Are Very Sensitive To The Smell Of Blood, Illusion Spells Are Not As Effective When Discovered. He May Still Be Able To Confuse Your Sight Or Hearing But Not Your Other Senses.]
AILA had a lot of knowledge about this world and all its secrets, All she had to do was encounter something once before understanding how it works. This was due to her ability to connect with the fabric of the universe.
‘Then why can I still feel the heat coming from everywhere?’ Alfred Interrogated.
[Because There Are Real Flames Around You.] AILA had cleared everything up for him.
Residents left their homes and came onto the street to investigate the commotion. As soon as they discovered Boss G was a participant, they ran back into their homes to collect their kids before running away.
They would’ve stayed and locked all the doors and windows, had they not feared the fire spreading.
Alfred returned to his normal self, he lost the strength boost and felt drained from his Shakti levels reaching 0. A different type of hunger stirred up inside him, it wasn’t for food but for blood.
He closed his eyes and sniffed the air. There was the stench of soot and smoke everywhere. However, amongst all the strong odors, there was a sweet smell lingering in the air. He could pinpoint the direction where the scent was the strongest.
Alfred couldn’t gauge Boss G’s Mana levels but it was safe to assume he still had something in the tank. Although he now knew the spell was not as strong as it appeared, it could still deal damage to him. Since his HP had already dropped to 12, he had to be extra cautious.
“I see you lost your form, it’s time for you to die!” Boss G shouted from no particular direction.
Alfred followed the smell of blood and ran in that direction. He sliced his blade horizontally and followed up with numerous hacks and slashes flinging his sword from every angle.
Clang!
The sword managed to connect, unfortunately, it was only with the boss’ dagger and not his body.
“You fool! Hahaha! Blindly swinging is not going to save you. SCORCH!” Clamored Boss G, as he pointed his arm at Alfred’s head.
Fwoosh!
A fireball whizzed past Alfred’s head, the heat dried all the sweat on his forehead as he managed to narrowly avoid a fatal blow.
Alfred Kicked low while dropping his head, he didn’t see the imminent threat but his movement saved him from becoming barbeque. The intention was to get Boss G immobile, he sent out numerous kicks to his lower legs in hopes of achieving this.
One Kick landed on the inner calf of the boss’ left leg and he stammered back, he was panicking because his use of the Illusion spell and Scorch depleted almost all of his Mana. Boss G had one more chance to cast Scorch before all his Mana ran out.
Alfred could not see where his opponent was, from time to time, a fake clone would sprint at him only to pass through him. He noticed Boss G couldn’t create two clones at the same time, ‘maybe he’s doing this on purpose to lower my guard?’ He pondered.
An Idea came to Alfred, he stopped hesitating and ran toward the familiar scent. He dragged his blade in the mud while twisting it and flung it in a particular direction.
The mud landed flat on Boss G’s chest, now there was a mark identifying his position. He could still change the illusion to make the mud disappear but he was low on Mana and wanted to use his last reserves on an attack.
‘Got him!’ Alfred was elated as he sprinted at the floating mud. He lost his Vampiric mode and wasn’t as fast. However, he was still faster than Boss G so he closed in on him before he could get away.
Alfred swung the sword diagonally but missed. The boss stepped back, dodging the blade. He continued his motion with the created torque and took out his knife as he spun. He held it in a reverse grip and hurtled the knife at Boss G with precision going for his neck.
Shing!
It collided with Boss G’s dagger in mid-air. He barely managed to block. The blade launched the dagger 5 meters and Boss G staggered back as he lost his balance. While he fell, Alfred kicked out guessing the position of his head from the positioning of the mud.
Whack!
The kick landed square on Boss G’s jaw and almost rendered him unconscious. He fell on his back and shouted out “Wait! You don’t know who I am!”
Alfred already swung out again with his sword, it almost connected with Boss G’s neck before he pulled back to listen. “And who are you?” He asked as he held the blade against the boss’ neck.
The Illusion dissipated and Alfred could see reality again, the house was burning in raging flames behind him. The fire had time to spread, it was a windy night which fuelled the flames and spread them to nearby homes.
Pieces of fallen wood lay strewn on the muddy street, still alight. The light from the fire and the darkness of the slums contrasted to create a picturesque scene.
“I am the son of Declan Haco!” Boss G proclaimed proudly.
“Why do I care?” Alfred replied pushing the tip of the blade slightly on his neck.
“You don’t know who he is? He’s the leader of a middle-class family in the inner city!” the boss cried out in disbelief.
“Don’t lie to me I know you’re real name is Guillaume Moulin!” Alfred almost decapitated the boss for lying, he learned his real name from Ratlid’s Memories. However, he decided to hear his reply out of curiosity.
“No! That’s my mother’s surname, she was a servant in his manor whom he took a liking. I was prohibited from using his name to hide the secret.”
“If that’s the case then why would it even matter, if you were wanted you wouldn’t be living in the slums abandoned.”
“I haven’t been abandoned, my father loves me but he can’t publically help me otherwise I would be executed if discovered. My mother was already killed by his family to hide their shame, they don’t know I’m alive.” Boss G explained.
“That further proves my point, you’re just wasting time, now die!”
Before Alfred could do the deed Boss G blurted out, “He helps me in the shadows that’s why I’m the boss of the slums, and I even get rare meetings with him like I had this morning!”
“What’s your point?” Alfred was running out of patience.
“If I die, it would be very easy for him to investigate. Not much happens in the slums without his knowledge. He works as a smuggler for some high-profile people and I help him with his work. If I go missing, He will not let it go without investigation.”
Alfred hesitated for a moment and fell into thought. As he was looking out into the distance, Boss G opened his palm and yelled out “Die scum! Scorch!” He roared, trying to catch Alfred off guard.
A small fireball left Boss G’s palm and floated up towards Alfred’s head, he jerked his head to the side smoothly. The fireball had missed. Had he been truly distracted, it would have landed and caused some serious damage.
To Boss G’s disappointment, Alfred was expecting a desperate attack from him. He had been in this situation many times before and people always attacked in a last-ditch effort to save themselves. He faked an opening waiting to see if Boss G was serious about negotiating.
Alfred plunged the entire blade into the boss’ neck all while keeping eye contact with him. He remembered how this opponent managed to frighten him. He looked deep into his bulging eyes spewing blood, and his foaming mouth while he reveled in his victory
