Ors returned Rena and walked back the the rest of the group. Only two others had their pokemon out, Alynn, who received a Machop from her parents the day prior, and Doto, who chose a Mareep.
When all three were back at the field, the principal finally continued. "You will be led by an alumni or teacher in certain exercises meant to bring you closer to your pokemon, you may opt to battle each other at any time provided a proctor is with you. Finally, on graduation night, you will fight in a city-wide tournament, in which everyone from 16-18 who just got their pokemon will participate."
'That should be around 200 people, from my calculations. Why have I never heard of this?' Ors furrowed his brow.
"This is because far too many trainers have died in the past two years. More battle training has been deemed necessary by the city council. Thus, a new rule has been implemented. Everybody may now choose their aid for the next three days, starting with the lowest scorers, as they need the most assistance. After this, you may return home; count it as a half day for today."
Ors was the last person to choose his mentor and the last to return home. He got left with the one mentor nobody else wanted: the principal himself. He worked his past students past the bone. One nearly died of exhaustion in the past.
But Ors was nothing but thrilled at his prospects. After all, Spenser used a Suicune and Lapras in the games, meaning he had at least some knowledge on water and ice types. And he wanted to get started on icy wind as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, the principal was not free that night, having prior engagements. This was no problem as it gave more time for Ors and Rena to actually make some training plans, as they had only spoken to each other to bond thus far.
Ors released his pokemon onto his head. "Hey, Rena, it's about time for me to go home, and I doubt you'll be able to keep up with my top speed while running. I know you can while swimming, but there's no river near my place. So I'm gonna need you to hold on."
"What do you mean, 'hold on'?" She calmly asked. "WAHHHHHHHHH!"
Forcing his aura into his legs, the surroundings flew by, Ors hitting top speed in just a few seconds. "How's it feeling up there, princess?"
She yelled into his head as a reply, "I am fine at the moment, but I'll fly off at much higher speed."
Disappointed, Ors slowed down slightly, his prank on his pokemon failing. "I wanna talk to you about something on the run home. But this is something you cannot tell anyone. Your father, mother, brother, sister, anyone. Understand?"
Rena nodded.
"Good. I'm trusting you. How much do you know about your species' limits?" He began speaking to her telepathically, a skill granted by the blood bond.
She thought for a moment. "There are stories about the founder of our tribe, who had massive, burly arms and a muscular frame, but those are largely considered to just be stories. Why, do you know something else?"
"I do, but this is something unknown to most of humanity. You can evolve into something else after Poliwhirl. One of two things, in fact. A Poliwrath, which your founder seems to be. You would lose speed, but experience a massive increase in sheer strength and defense. Alternatively, you could choose to be a Politoed. Although this latter route is harder to fulfill, as it requires a rare item, it is preferable for you as it increases your ranged attack power." It took a bit for Ors to decide whether or not he should actually tell his pokemon about her evolution yet, but decided it would build trust and focus training on physical strength or special attack now rather than later.
Completely silent for around five minutes, Rena finally replied. "I think the latter is a better option, as you said. I am curious how you learned about this, but we can settle that later, since you obviously aren't willing to tell me now."
"Good. Now that we've gone over that, I want to try teaching you a certain attack. I was between ice punch and icy wind, but the latter is probably the best option if you aim for Politoed. But before a new attack, what moves do you know now?" Ors asked, picking up speed again. They were around halfway to the bus stop.
"I can make rain or shoot water, coat myself in water and charge, hit things hard with my tail, and shoot mud. I don't know what you call those moves. I can also make people tired if they look at me too long, but that one's really more on enemies to look at me than me actually doing anything." She answered almost instantly, not hiding any moves from Ors.
The boy nodded, "Good. In order, those moves are rain dance, water gun, aqua jet, pound, mud shot, and hypnosis. We'll be focusing on learning icy wind and mastering mud shot and rain dance, that way you can fight against anything super effective against you."
The two started talking tactics as they raced to the bus stop, until they were about two minutes away. Ors had Rena use aqua jet to fly there. Because of the lack of move mastery, the last leg of the journey took as much time as the rest put together.
In fact, Ors opted to travel there by walking on his fingers to ensure both were putting in the same effort. Sitting on the bus, Ors was forced to return Rena, but he could still speak through their bond's telepathy. "Oh, and you should be wary of my little sister, Lada. She'll kill you with love."
"She'll kill me?" Rena stilled, peering at her trainer. 'Did I make the wrong choice?'

Ors deadpanned. "With love. It's a human expression meaning she'll give you hugs until you want to die. Or something like that."
Arriving at the bus stop a mere three miles from his house, Ors sprinted the rest of the way in seven minutes, throwing open the door and calling out, "GUESS WHO'S BACK EARLY!"
He quickly realized he looked like an idiot since nobody was home. "Huh, guess they went shopping. Well, do you wanna play a game or train?"
"I suppose a game for now. Training can happen later, I'm still tired from our bout." She yawned, covering it with her tail.
Ors slapped his forehead. "Oh, or are you hungry? Just tell me when you want food or water, I'll forget otherwise. I'm a bit of a scatterbrain like that."
"Umm, if you have a bit of lettuce, I would like that." Rena nodded, embarrassed.
Sternly, Ors looked down at the tadpole. "Never be cautious to ask for anything, you got that? If there's one set ground rule, it's that! We're family now, so we take care of each other! Got it?"
Closing her eyes, Rena smiled. "Yes, understood. Thank you, Ors."
At that moment, Lada and Selene walked in. "Oh, you're home early big brother!" The younger yelled.
"Ahem, that's the one I warned you about." One partner whispered to the other mentally.
"You have a pokemon with you? OHMYGODITSSOCUTE! IWANNAHOLDITANDLOVEITANDSQUISHITFOREVER!" Lada screamed, charging at her brother's pokemon.
Cringing, Ors held up his pokeball, returning Rena. Standing, he karate chopped his sister's head. "Oi, chill out, littlun. She might kill you if you hug her too much, you know?"
"Liar! She's too cute to hurt me!" The noise maker did its job.
Ors released his aura. "Did I stutter? SHUT. UP. This is a dangerous creature, not a kitty. It might not even be on purpose. You think your weak skin can take a hit from a playful water gun? You'll be in the hospital or worse!" Although he didn't like yelling at his sister, his pokemon was a lethal force, not something to be trifled with.
At that moment, his mom came and lightly held her daughter's shoulder, placating her somewhat. She then signed calmly, *Brother is correct. You could be hurt.*
Turning to Ors, she frowned, hands flying in agitation. *But that doesn't give you the right to use aura on your sister. She could take severe damage. Never do so again!*
"Understood. But please listen to me, sis. You've gotta grow up at some point. With a lot of pokemon in the wild, it's kill or be killed. You may be young now, but I'd rather you lose your innocence early than die to a Rhyhorn stampede." Ors tried to comfort her by giving a carrot and stick, seemingly succeeding.
Now that Lada was calm, he finally released the pokemon to show his family. "Mom, Sis. I introduce my starter, Rena the Poliwag."
His mom narrowed her eyebrows, signing to her son. *Did you not get first place?*
*No, I did. I chose her above the others.* He signed back.
*Even though there is only one evolution?* She asked, to which Ors nodded.
Lada was calmly talking to Rena about something inane, allowing mother and son to spend some time together before Ors left for his journey. "Hahhh, this is nice." He smiled.
