Chapter 1: Mixia and Sweets

Mixia wanted something sweet.

It was a rainy day, dark brooding clouds in the evening and blobs of water falling on the ground. But Mixia didn’t feel sad. The rain brought music to the otherwise lonesome halls of the palace. And Mixia suddenly had a craving for sweets, chocolate or parfaits. So there she was, her arm on the window and her tongue lying dejectedly inside her mouth.

Maybe the kitchens will have something for me, Mixia thought. Down went her shoes on the bare floor and the echoes of her feet sang along with the rain.

“Mrs. Orfield.”

Little Mixia peered from behind the giant wooden door and Mrs. Orfield, hearing the sound, turned to the young princess.

“Little Highness, is there something you want?”

“Mrs. Orfield…” Mixia held out two tiny hands. “Sweets.”

It didn’t take long for an assortment of cookies, brownies, scones, and chocolates shaped into cats and hearts to be brought to the tea table. Mixia sat obediently, waiting until the last of the maids finished with the plates, yet her feet betrayed her ecstasy and impatience as it swung happily underneath the table.

“Mrs. Orfield, Mrs. Orfield!”

Mixia called for the busy head chef. A kitchen help fetched Mrs. Orfield and the robust-faced woman came in a hurry.

“Mrs. Orfield!”

“Little Highness.”

“What shape is this one, Mrs. Orfield? Is it a kitty?” Little Mixia tilts her head to the side, looking at the woman with innocent wondering eyes.

“Yes, it is a kitty, Little Highness. Would you like more kitties?”

“Yes! Little Highness wants more kitties! Kitties look pretty and they taste the sweetest.”

Another batch of chocolate cats came in a minute and Mixia happily chewed on her piece of sugar as the evening rain continued.

When it was time for bed, Mixia had to brush her teeth twice as thorough as normal and spit more water. But she thought of strawberry brownies for next time.
