Chapter 4: The Cat

Mixia saw a cat. Its coat was dirty gray and its white paws looked like soil. Mixia saw it one day after her history classes were over and she was permitted to wander in the gardens. The cat had yellow eyes like any other cat and white fur like any other cat. But it was very dirty and Mixia wondered where it came from.

Mixia went to the kitty in tippy-tip-toes and slowly reached out a chubby hand.

“Kitty.”

Cat:…

“Meowr”

Cat:…

“Pspspspspsps”

The cat took a step back.

“MR. HEDFORD! I SAW A KITTY!”

But the cat quickly turned its heel and leaped into the bushes, leaving only the rustling of leaves behind.

When Mr. Hedford arrived, all that greeted him was a crying Mixia. Worried, he held Mixia’s shoulders.

“Highness Mixia! What’s wrong? Where is the fiend who caused such injustice to a-”

“THE KITTY!”

Mr. Hedford: ?

“T-the kitty r-ran a-away and I really l-liked it!”

Mr. Hedford calmed down. With a gentle voice he says, “Highness Mixia, it is not possible to keep a pet within the palace. Come, let’s head back inside.”

“It doesn’t have to be a pet!”

Mr. Hedford paused in standing up and looked at Mixia for a while, seemingly surprised.

“Then, what shall we do with the kitty, Highness Mixia?”

Mixia sniffled. “Y-You can give it to a servant and have them take very good care of it. I can give them Mr. Kitty’s treats and Mr. Kitty will grow very well! But find the kitty first, Mr. Hedford!” She ended with a command amidst her sniffles.

Mr. Hedford straightened up and pushed back his glasses. “Very well, Highness Mixia. It will be as you say.”

Mixia headed to the palace with Mr. Hedford’s tight grip on her chubby hand. The sun had gone, the last of the afternoon rays gave way to the coming evening. When they arrived, it was time for dinner.
