Mixia read books. She liked reading the ones with many children going on an adventure together or the ones with talking rabbits and villagers living in a tall, tall tree.
The fairytales on her shelves had bright pictures and the colors bled into the words, they made quite the wonderful fantasies. Mixia liked to read inside her room on her bed. And today, with the bright sun high in the sky and the blowing wind, she decided was just the day for reading.
It was quiet in the hallways this morning. If Her Highness Mixia wasn’t up and about during these hours, there must be only one thing she could be doing, Mr. Hedford thought. Briskly, he headed to the gardens.
But when he arrived there, the gardeners all said they have seen neither Her Highness’ dress nor heard Her Highness’ sweet laughter among the sky flowers. Mr. Hedford was bewildered. Upon return, he headed to the kitchens and sought Mrs. Orfield. Surely, Highness Mixia must be nicking snacks then?
But after a shake of Mrs. Orfield’s head, Mr. Hedford once again set on his quest to find the missing princess. This time, more worried than confused.
As he walked in the hallways, he chanced upon the history Professor, Mr. Wildeberg, and gave a curt greeting.
“Butler Hedford! Great morning, is it not? I will be in the classroom to classify a few things. Hopefully, Her Highness will be up to a few hours of Golden Ages today.” Professor Wildeberg chuckled.
Mr. Hedford looked up. “Just the very child I was thinking of, Professor Wildeberg have you by chance seen Her Highness?”
Professor Wildeberg stopped to think as his old age at times subjected him to memory loss. But as he answered he was quite sure that only ancient manuscripts graced his eyes since the day started, “No, I haven’t, Butler Hedford. Is something the matter?”
“Merely that the young princess doesn’t seem to be in the gardens or in the kitchens. Where could she have gone…” Mr. Hedford muttered to himself as his feet urged him to move.
“Well, since this morning I have been preoccupied with the texts from Serlina. It is such a pleasant day for reading. By and by, I do so hope Her Highness will be found soon.”
“Thank you for your kind thoughts, Professor.” Mr. Hedford stopped in his haste. The Professor went on his way and Mr. Hedford stood in the sunlit hallways, suddenly thinking of another place Her Highness could be in and what she could be doing.
When Mixia’s bedroom door opened, a sweaty Mr. Hedford accompanied by a returning Flores glimpsed through the crack in the door and saw Mixia, asleep on her bed, pages of fairytales strewn about her silver hair.
Flores sighed, having heard the whole story from Mr. Hedford and secretly feeling sorry for all the trouble the Butler had gone through.
Butler Hedford sighed in relief.
